China's Lending to Africa Is On The Rise Again
Просмотров 217 часов назад
Chinese lenders approved loans worth $4.61 billion to Africa last year, marking the first annual increase since 2016. Africa secured more than $10 billion in loans a year from China between 2012-2018, thanks to President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), but the lending fell precipitously from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Don't dispear create jobs guys the grass is greener where it is watered....water your own....
Nothing for free in this world
Its really got to be win-win. China can't just give give and get nothing in return. The problem isn't China but African governments and how they use the money. Nobody is forced to take any loan.
You are right
Thanks for saying good government, we need new government
I think it’s because of Ziscosteel and its rebirth. It is well known that steel making requires a lot of power so Zisco and Disco will keep the country in the dark. Kariba levels are too low and the nation needs at least 5000 MW for industrialisation. It is an Indian company that will revive Zisco.
We need car manufacturers
We desperately need to start generating more power if they ever hope to revive Zimbabwe's economy. It's one of the biggest limiting factors. I think we need to invest more into large scale solar plantations and use the current power plants at night when solar is no longer active. Coal fired Thermal power plants and hydro power plants require too much water to run. Solar should be Zimbabwe's future to power.
I think there's Mureza that's been trying to revive Zimbabwe's home grown car manufacturing capabilities.
💚🖤❤💯
how r u?!omg-insane edition-;)
Hey hey. Doing great. Thanks for watching.
Zimbabwe needs to consult Zambia on the water usage on the Zambezi river. It is also possible not to use water for cooling power stations with the right technology. What progress is being made on the Batoka Project on the Zambezi river?
That one has stalled a bit. But people are still talking about it. Funding is their challenge.
How can you say that, the river doesn't belong to Zambia
They jointly plan and coordinate projects on the Zambezi river, so perhaps that's what he means.
Well, politics and economics are often strange bedfellows, aren't they? The driving force behind the founding of the East African Community (EAC) was their common market between them and not political "integration." Yet its benefits have never been fully realised after all these years. Moreover, Uganda has demonstrated over the years that it can produce all kinds of food much more cheaply than all her EAC neighbours. It only makes economic sense for Kenya and the rest of the EAC to import at a much lower cost what Uganda can produce much more cheaply, instead of trying to produce it at a much higher cost at home. Furthermore, Uganda is the gateway to the rest of EAC countries of the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. It is obvious that both Tanzania and Kenya stand to gain from exporting their goods to Uganda and the rest of the EAC by rail. Therefore, eventually it is economics and not politics that will prevail.
Hi, I love your points. Kenya and Tanzania seem to have focused on knowledge work (technology), so it seems your points makes sense to buy Uganda's cheaper produce and export technology to them in reverse. May the most competitive win I guess.
@@kontuthu "Kenya and Tanzania seem to have focused on knowledge work (technology)," but so has Uganda. Moreover, the geography of the three countries will be a decisive factor in how much progress their economies will make in the future since none of us can eat "(technology)". Obviously, Uganda as the most "competitive" food basket of the three countries, which is also pursuing a "(technology)"-based economy as well as Kenya and Tanzania, has a noticeable economic advantage over both of them.
It's very bad
First view.
Well, the projected economic growth rate of "Southern Africa" compared to "East Africa" is bleak as you have pointed out. However, I expected you to say something about the lack of good leadership or precisely GOOD GOVERNANCE pervasive throughout the African continent. That is what is behind the wrong policy of depending on the "extraction of resources from the ground for export" in "Southern Africa," as opposed to concentrating on "infrastructure development, technology and advancing their people" we see today in "East Africa," which is the fastest growing region in Africa. Similarly, "the economies of the western world," which "tend to focus on the knowledge economy" are thereby "outpacing the rest of the world." Hence, the question you should be asking is who makes the decisions to pursue the economic policies you have mentioned in "Southern Africa," as well as "East Africa" or in the "western world?" Those policies don't come from thin air, do they? Rather, they are made by their leadership, in all sectors of the economy and above all their government. When the leadership fails, nothing worthwhile happens. The lack of GOOD GOVERNANCE is the most intractable problem we are facing, a detriment and an impediment to our progress in Africa since independence. It is a broad term consisting of 8 principles, as enunciated by the United Nations, the topmost of which is the ACCOUNTABILITY to the governed and sadly the least understood by the African leadership today. Today, there isn't a single region in Africa lacking the means (brains, work ethic, and so on) and resources (both natural and human) to prosper. Nevertheless, the means and resources at our disposal will not amount to anything until we have achieved GOOD GOVERNANCE. Indeed, individual Africans and their families may have prospered since independence. However, it takes organisation, planning, good policies well-executed and so on, to uplift millions of people in any country. That is why GOOD GOVERNANCE matters a great deal. Therefore, none of the regions of Africa are rich yet, nor are any of them poor at all. We are simply badly governed low-income countries.
Hi, thanks for watching and sharing this perspective. It's spot on. I think the people of Africa need to learn to stand up and make their governments accountable. We did it once when we were demanding to rule ourselves during colonisation. We seem to have lost that edge somehow and pacified. If we can't make them accountable they'll never have the incentive to govern well. After all, power corrupts.
It's in the same light SA citizens are fighting for ownership of spazas, salons and jobs at restaurants and petrol stations. Even Moz just signed a labour's bill. But only SA citizens get the xenophobic label. Disingenuous
That's a fair point. Does SA have a labour law in place that prioritises SA citizens for jobs first before non-nationals are allowed to occupy the positions?
I sorry but last time I checked Africa’s share of global manufacturing is 3-5 % and has only gone down. Until we have cheap energy, robust logistics infrastructure, a large unified market etc I don’t see this going far. Btw, the ACfTA was to start in 2021 and we are still waiting. I am hopefully but I do not have much faith.
Don't lose faith. If you've been paying attention, I think there's a new drive amongst African leaders to push this Pan African movement forward. Yes, we have infrastructure problems, but if you look towards north Africa and east Africa they've made huge strides towards making their nations attractive as investment destinations. So with that in mind, there's more interest in securing a strong hold onto what's to come in Africa. Companies can potentially tap into the 1 billion people. Have hope, we have to take all the small wins and keep looking forward.
Cheap yes but quality/nutritious no no l would opt for locally sourced /home grown
That's a strong argument for locally produced produce. Can't fault that. Also, environmentally friendly with the whole world moving towards lowering the carbon footprint (less fuel spent bringing the produce to the consumer)

Hahaha, they just recently handed over their last base back to Niger. Its crazy. Lets hope they don't find other excuses to establish more bases on the continent.

Just live within your means & stop borrowing from them, period. You want to borrow some more after having gone delinquent. How ridiculous is that & that's what should be pissing you off more than anything.
Yes, yes yes. The borrowing needs to end. We just need to allow the nation to grow with what we have and stop trying to compete with countries that were built hundreds of years ago.
The Zimbabwean Land Reforms NEEDED to happen and were long overdue, and should be expanded into South Africa and Namibia as well ‼🟢⚫🔴 Foreign Direct Investment is meaningless and overrated when you no longer own your own economy and farmlands. The West (America, U.K., Israel) is not really interested in a self-sufficient Africa, and never will be... grow up.
Totally agree. I've always wondered why they are so determined to borrow money as a means of nation building. Is there no alternative paths. With all these doctorates we have running the country and they can't think of alternatives 🤔
I like your channel. Keep going and thanks! And oh, don't be angry with the US and the Paris club. That money we borrow from IMF and World Bank is THEIR taxpayer money. If we stop begging for money from everywhere, we won't have these issues. The West hates giving their hard-earned money to despots and dictators who murder their own citizens
But they are happy to kill their own minorities ?
Thanks for watching ☺️ I wonder what play they'll try next as sanctions just affected the populous over those intended.
😪So sad to hear this news after hearing about the Nigerian Govt's battle against the new Dangote Oil Refinery. We Africans are proving to be our very own worst enemies.💚🖤❤
True that right. They keep failing to properly incentivize people to conduct business in Africa 😤
Southern Africa is a beast, the only thing that is slowing us down is the sanctions on Zim and soon with the help of BRICS we bypass them . All you talk about is load shedding and the east investing on infrastructure you are really not telling us how . South Africa is not only investing in mining and the issue of load shedding is being dealt with and you talk as if we are stuck on load shedding and it can never be fixed .
They are investing in roads, railways, ports, airports , hydroelectric, geothermal and in Kenya there are even plans to get nuclear power they have the fastest and cheapest internet in Africa that has made it a hub for silicon valley giants like Google and Microsoft in the region and has the fastest growing digital tech startups too. This is all without the natural resourses that the south has.
Hi, well I believe I gave examples. The examples to draw from are the projects the eastern countries have built. They are les dependant on resource extraction (mining) which frees them from commodity market ups and downs. Thus the industries they've chosen to invest in can have far more people participate in than if they chose to grow via mining. Of which has limits public participation. Then if we look at the southern region, South Africa makes up the vast majority of the output. leaving all the other countries in her dust. We have outliers such as Botswana and Namibia that have been very stable for a long time with their economies simingly doing well in terms of slow steady progression. Botswana has managed their diamond wealth well, and their tourism does well to contribute to their GDP (granted too much reliance on diamonds). Then if we look at Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa, all these countries continue to have electricity issues. You can easily find this information, the Zimbabwe Power Company on x.com (twitter) publish the daily sums of power in megawatts (MWs) the nation has made. Zimbabwe needs a little over 500 MWs of power to make up for the difference that's missing to meet the full demand from the grid (public & industry consumption). Zambia is struggling to make enough power as their countries electricity mostly comes from hydrodams. But to address the point you made about "the load shedding issue is being addressed", well such investments historically take time. It takes time to plan, lodge application forms to relevant government bodies, get approved, then look for contractors to build whatever you're building. All of this takes time. This will take years to be resolved. The load shedding issues play a huge part into why the southern regions performance isn't as great as the east, electricty equals productivity. You can't run whatever business efficiently with load shedding being an issue. It will take time for Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to invest more into new power generation infrustructure. Most of the current power generation plants were built during the colonial era. The current governments failed to plan for their growing populations. Which should speak volumes on its own. The eastern countries are growing faster from the GDP perspective because they don't share all the same power generation challenges the south is facing. Sorry for the essay, I'm just trying to summarise my train of thought.
The %s of growth rates in East Africa are higher than Southern Africa but many southern African economies are growing from a larger base, so those growth rates are not negligible. South Africa is also still quite dominant and very diversified relative to other African countries. Many of the biggest companies in Africa are South African. Lovely video but I think it misses some of this nuance and implies Southern African countries are not investing heavily in infrastructure (especially green energy) and are also more politically stable compared to East africa.
Hi, thanks for watching the video. Yes we did leave out some of the other nuances of the two regions as we were mostly looking at GDP growth projections alone. But, totally right. The reports we were working with didn't account for the stability places like Namibia and Botswana have experienced for decades after their independance.
You are repeating one thing over and over. Your content is zero 0️⃣
