Jaco Pastorius Big Band - Live In Japan 1982 (In Stereo)
I was 16 in 1988 when I first got this record (and playing sax)... I've heard this record so many times, know it inside out. 2 years later, I started playing bass and I have been a professional musician since then. Imagine my surprise and excitement upon finding this video and finally getting to see footage of Jaco and his amazing band playing this amazing tune, the same one I listened to so many times already... Then, when I saw Jaco doing a truss rod adjustment on the fly, in the middle of his solo, I nearly spat my coffee out.... Unbelievable...
The best
This is so Duke Ellington it’s almost derivative. But Jaco Pastorius never derived, he just stole and copied like genius does.
7:56 my favorite!!!
¡increíble la genialidad de Jaco!

Jaco will live in our hearts as long as we live !
KICK THE CAN CREWの性コンティニューから来た
who else was not expecting them to do the original john coltrane solo on steel pan lmao
I’ve listened 100 times. Still it’s like a bit of God-like genius. The throw-overs, the control this band has over chaos, and Toots…Toots…
Not enough bass. Damn
This theme fills me with joy.
The man on the pan has an almost impossible mission. (Just join in as best you can!) So many Jaco big pieces are like this, just join in when I say! It’s genius but woa?!
Probably the greatest since Hendrix. Slept it off in Central Park, nobody cared. They knew how good he was, but he was also a right bastard! I still say, greatest since Hendrix but a right awkward squad dude!
He really is, I swear, just opening it up, it’s just a superb exhibition.
This is Godlike. When he goes down and hits really low notes, ow boy.
I heard Hendrix. I heard Pastorius. Happy me.
I would literally have happily died on the spot to hear this live.
Fr man🤦🏾♂️
It’s most magnificent when Toots says to Pastorius and he roars with laughter. What did Toots say? I think we should know.
Oh man, it’s just gorgeous.
Steel Drum Is Magical
There are moments of absolute genius here. Towards the end when he starts to follow the big brass, you go ‘I’ve never heard that before’, but the arrangement from start to finish is just, takes my breath away. A noise, but what a noise, a work of genius. And then he gives us ‘3 Views of a Secret’.
I love it when he takes a second to mess with his EQ and he uses the D and G strings. So smooth
The Gods play
G.O.A.T.
RIP , JACO PASTORIUS. 😊🥰
I love playing alone to this on bass! Such a jam!
Jaco ! Jaco ‼︎ JACO !!!
He redefined what it means to be an electronic bass player!
One of the coolest things i ever heard, thing is you gotta kno those tunes!!!!
7:14
This shit is awesome!
Did Jaco like sushi, or was he more of a teriyaki person?
My duuuuuude.... In his own music that was in his head! 🤘🏽
6:40 blackbird
Musica epocale
4:45 gets screwdriver, tightens truss rod, plays solo, no big deal. LMAO
Only 13 comments! It’s a disgrace. I check in from time to time just in case someone new has stumbled on it. Ps there is a daft story surrounding ‘Liberty City’. Around the same time as the Big Band started playing this, there were riots in Liberty City Miami somewhere, some wag suggested Jaco had branched out into left wing politics! The great man always said ‘Pure coincidence’ but with Jaco you can never be sure!
Tell us more
Thank you × 1000000
It’s soooooooooooo good. I weep and thank God I’m alive. Cheers Pasto.
wow, une solide version et jaco serein, qui a du plaisir sur scène. Absolument magnifique.
This is my absolute favorite…Jaco looks so happy…everyone in sync…wish I knew what Toots was saying to him to make him laugh…at around 7 mins
This is gold!
Addendum Jaco has 5 trombones going here! Brecker, Thielemans etc, and what sounds like the brass section of the LA philharmonia! Oh what could have been...
With Jaco on bass, Don Alias on congas, Peter Erskine on drums, Othello Molineaux on steel drum, Jean Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Randy Brecker on trumpet and Bob Mintzer on soprano sax.
A fist of people run away from home :)
Wow, it was like you were reading my mind a year in the past. I was just wondering if someone would identify some of the lead players. Thank you!
Is there a better live band jam than this?
😳😳😳
this is absolutely very good quality. thx for the upload.
Amazing!
