Hi! I’m Ray and I play NTRP 3.5-4.0-ish level tennis in Singapore. I have no official rating since I have not played in any UTR / ITN / NTRP tournaments.
I serve and volley and rush the net a lot. Welcome to my channel.

While fooling around during rallies recently, I started experimenting with a high take back on all balls. The mental image was that of Del Potro’s takeback. In the past I had a mental image more of Agassi’s takeback.
I was amazed how I started to be able to swing out hard on every ball and keep a high percentage them in the court. I think the take back works well with my heavy racquet, letting gravity carry the momentum into a sledgehammer style forehand. hahahahaha...keep practising Ladies !!
guy in black's serve is super good
I see you are hitting and serving with more pace than usual, Ray. Good job. If you want to rush to net, you gotta clean up your volleys properly. Currently your volleys are too weak and they give your opponent opportunity to finish. Good luck
A draw! If we extrapolate the results, you’ll beat him next time.
I’ve been losing to him for over a year. Great milestone marker to judge my improvement against. Hopefully I can really start beating him regularly at some point.
BORING!!!!
@@brianbarkowski1910 This video was posted 3 weeks ago and still getting views and comments. It’s becoming one of my most watched videos. Maybe I should be posting more of these boring ones to differentiate from all the exciting channels out there 😅
One honest advice, if you continue to play this way, you will not improve much, hereon. unlike some other players on youtube, their progress from 3.0 to 3.5 to 4.0 and beyond is very visible from their videos over time. Your game has more or less remained the same and you have already plateaued. even if you win, you can only beat 3.0 players or equivalently low 3.5 players if you dont significantly pick up pace, spin, power and overall feel and control skills in all aspects of your game. I do wish you a fruitful journey in the game of Tennis, Ray. Thanks for uploading.
@@DonYang73 Bro I’m in my mid 40’s. Plateauing and not getting worse, and being able to play injury free, is a luxury. I just wanna have fun and exercise man. 😎
@@3.5netrushtennis fully understandable Ray and I know exactly what you are talking about, i myself, am in my 50s. 😎. It takes a lot out of me when playing guys 15-20 yrs younger. but I have been watching many of your videos and just believe that you can improve so much more in terms of technique and power. good luck, hope to play one day.
While I agree with DonYang73 on most of what he said, it is notable he mentioned pace and power, and control. If I had to choose between pace/power (same thing mentioned 2x? so i surmise that's what he is urging) and control, definitely control is more important and less taxing on the body (having read what you said about your age). Another often overlooked aspect is movement, which all of us should add. Once you have control and movement, everything is easier, and it is up to you to add power or not. Also, the narrative about what constitutes 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, beyond etc is really arbitrary and sometimes laughable, especially having watched so many players. There are 4.something players out there who feel they hit hard and hit aesthetically but cannot beat beginner players who lack pace, just slice and dice and lobs aka pushers. In these cases, wouldn't we say these 4.something players are way overrated or maybe they are only capable of handling certain styles of play. After all, tennis about winning and not a beauty contest. (Otherwise, there would be bonus points for tennis clothing.) In fact, I would go as far as to say such 4.something players who cannot beat pusher players are at best 3.something if not worse, since they cannot handle this supposedly inferior/beginner level of players. In short, my suggestion is to work on movement and control and have the ability to handle all types of game styles (like how you did here) because a player who can only handle one type of opponent is basically an inflexible sitting duck and is objectively just a rung above beginners despite looking much better.
@@leisurefarm Agreed. There are different circles of players too. Some are only interested in rallying, and their skills and self rating reflect that. Their “4.0” may be only referring to the ground strokes, disregarding the serve or any match play intelligence. But it serves them well since they will find other 4.0 groundstrokers to rally with in the apps. I understand where they are coming from. If they put “3.5” to reflect their match play, then they may have disappointing rallying sessions. Same with those who only play doubles. Or females who only play with other females. Or the older folks. UTR is supposed to be the great equalizer so that any age and any sex can pay evenly with each other, but then ego comes into play. So we end up preferring a higher rating in our smaller circle than a lower rating in an expanded circle. Regarding styles, there’s the issue of matchups. The godlike fitness, build and power of Safin had losing record against the tricky wizard Santoro. My fav examples always.
@ yes i am talking about controlled pace/power. Not crazy ripping. Problem is that many 3.0 -3.5 players cannot add power with control and consistency. So they end up babying and playing “touch” tennis.
No way 3.5 be serious!
Nice game! Can I rally with you, what's your rovo?
@@mawan9947 thanks! I don’t rally much, mostly just match play. I also don’t use Rovo much. But it’s “Ray 🐤” on Rovo and “Ray Lim (3.8)” on Reclub.
Let's go! Time for Net Rusher v 2.0
Both leave the ground when serving & hit full swing shots, that is not 3.5😊
People who use slices in regular play understand that not only is tennis a physical game, but it's also one of the greatest mind games ever invented. Keep up the great work!
Black has good standard technique from the baseline, although there's not a lot of power coming from the ground strokes. When facing half long slices, drop shots or other quirky shots, his game falls apart. He's likely taken a lot of training, or has been sparring a lot with a fellow soft baseliner. White is a good hustler, the technique is less conventional but he has superior ball awareness. For Black this is good training to deal with non-standard shots and covering the whole court. White is facing a choice: keep going with the "ugly" game or developing standard ground strokes to enlarge the toolset.
Well summarized 👍🏻
Nice job changing your strategy! It's amazing how many players will start losing, and just keep doing the same thing that isn't working.

They are waaaaaay too consistent to be 3.0. Don't be a troll.
@@JosephYoYo I just watched other videos of them, indeed they are 3.5. It just doesn't look like it from this video...
Sure they are. There are 15+ shot rallies here. You rarely see that at 3.0. 3.5 is a VERY big range.
Great game Ray! Looking forward to working on my weaknesses before our next game!
great game, why no 1HBH though? makes me sad lol
Nice match! Don’t know why you consider slicing ugly. It’s a weapon as any other in tennis the other guy should learn to fight against.
@@RicardoB-he5ht It’s just the popular way of viewing tennis, not my own opinion. Brad Gilbert who wrote the book Winning Ugly got a lot of flak back in the day for having “ugly” strokes as compared to his rivals who hit hard winners and great touch volleys. Even today, you’ll see lots of negative comments on videos where people play with lots of slice. All the way to the top of WTA you’ll see lots of negative comments on Monica Niculescu’s videos. People just seem to find hard bashing tennis more aesthetically pleasing.

I am from Singapore too. I just started learning tennis with a coach, looking to start playing with others next year. How does the rating system works? Are there beginners players at reclub/ rovo?
@@WTiDeadlyfury Practically everyone is self-rated in Singapore. Check out NTRP guides and roughly give yourself a rating to start with. On Reclub the ratings are similar to NTRP, in 0.5 increments. On Rovo, the ratings are finer, in 0.1 increments. Then go play with others who have rated themselves at similar levels and you’ll see if you’ve overrated or underrated yourself. Tweak accordingly. Lots of beginners on the apps. Total beginners are probably around 2.5-3.0. Beginners with some racquet sports background may be around 3.0-3-5. For now, Rovo is the more widely used app, but it is very old and sometimes buggy. Try both and see what you like.
This would annoy me to but I’m not completely following. Where are the walkers walking to? And what alternative should they use instead of walking past your court?
Too’
@@gregg9694 They are going over to the water dispensers or toilets. There are 3 courts on the other side where they are holding their event. Both sides lead to the same place. So they can walk past their own courts to get there. But they chose not to disrupt their own event, took a detour and came to our side then walked there.

one of the downsides of playing at heartbeat esp if on court 4. they really should add court separator thing at the ends also to catch stray balls
@@turbulenttennis Yeah court 4 is bad cos almost everyone has to go through the door next to it. We were on court 5 and I was totally fine with the people on court 6 next to us having to walk past our court to get to the toilets. But it was ridiculous why the spectators of court 3 avoided disrupting their own event, took a detour and came into court 4/5/6 to get to the toilets. There used to be portable court separators at the ends years ago. Not sure why they removed them. Maybe they got damaged and they just didn’t replace.

Hello Ray! Cheers from Brazil! I’m a 3.5 player just like you and been learning watching your videos. I noted that when you are at the net, the racket is a litlle low at the preparation. @@RicardoB-he5ht Hi! You’re right, it is a little low. I’ve experimented with different ready positions but often tend to fall back to this one which feels comfortable 😅 I definitely don’t like it too high or with the elbows too far away from the body like how some coaches teach it.

Are courts plentiful in Singapore?
@@alexsalvato1799 Incredibly plentiful. Almost every condominium (17.2% of households in sg) has at least one tennis court. Then there are the public courts, courts at civil service clubs, courts at national service clubs (SAFRA), courts at community centres, courts at tertiary and some secondary schools, and courts at private clubs.
Nothing wrong with having a good slice serve as your first serve - you can just as easily go for corners or slice into the body with a near-identical motion. Both are great options for drawing a weak return which you can rush up to. It's also easier to generate more sidespin than topspin so it holds up better to fatigue and softening balls than a kick serve.
Not a chance that serve at 4:37 is 198kph. Is the swing vision often inaccurate ?
Yeah it’s especially inaccurate when the camera isn’t mounted high enough, the background contrast is bad, and the camera angle is slanted. All 3 factors are in this video so I wouldn’t pay much attention to the speed at all.
That service motion. Wow. 😮
Watching this just make you appreciate how insane the level of pace and power is on the ATP tour. You guys play quite stable and consistent, but try increasing pace and power. The play looks extremely apprehensive and safe. Keep it up.
