An excellent video; thanks for all the useful information. I bought one of these Selmer (Aristocrat) flutes off eBay (for only $57!), and all the keys work well, and the pads are all good. Now I'm learning how to get a decent tone out of the head joint--I'm watching various videos, but this seems trickier than on the brass and reed instruments I already play!

Horn? (bell), collar? (barrel), lower body? (lower joint). You can’t just make up your own terminology! Yes, there is a smaller clarinet (assuming the one you’re showing is a B flat clarinet) and don’t forget the larger A clarinet which is often used in orchestra repertoire.

You could buy a good, student Franz Hoffman from Shar for $250 that will be properly set up, have good strings, and come with a decent bow. Brand spanking new from a real violin shop.

He got almost nothing correct. Invented new names for the pieces. Trill key was bent. Likely caused by his rehearsal of assembling the clarinet. Holy cow.

I kept cringing every time he touched the bow hair with his fingers because oil from your fingers can keep the hair from accepting the rosin when you rosin your bow. Also the best way to check for cracks along the seams is to lightly tap the edge of the body with a knuckle and listen for a high cracking sound. Also the grip behind the lapping ,or silver (in the case of a cheap student bow it will be nickel/silver) won't be rubber, it will be artificial leather or leather. Finally, a used student violin in that condition, I wouldn't give more than $75 dollars. I'm not trying to be spiteful but, I'm sure when it comes to guitars, you know your business but, you have a lot to learn about violins. Over 95 % of cheap violins come from China and are mass produced.

IMHO. ..with that much moth damage ..and age ....and drag..40 or 50 dollars is not the end of the story. I'll bet there is other less apparent pad damage...and for sure gummy oxidized lube in the hinge tubes. Do it right...do it once...all new pads and bumpers and head joint cork...no surprises as little pieces fall off one after another as old adhesives fail. On an instrument like this an overhaul is the best value...and by far the most reliable fix. Better bet is an overhaul.

do not put your mouthpiece in hot water!! this can make the mouthpiece turn white because it's made of hard rubber. instead, mix a small amount of vinegar with room temp water and soak the mouthpiece for a few minutes. this removes the white calcium residue and cleans the piece.

This guy does not know anything about buying a clarinet. The Eb key is badly bent, he does not know the correct names of the parts. Do NOT put the mouthpiece in hot water to clean it. And he sounds horrible playing the instrument. I don't think the instrument would have played the notes on the right hand (he did not play them) because the Eb key would have caused problems producing those notes.

alright just giving some follow up info to whoever watches this. A) do not apply cork grease the way he did you want to use your fingers to work it into the pores of the cork B) he said that the B key was sluggish, this is not true the B key has 2 fingerings and therefore if you press the bottom keys the corresponding keys (with exception of the C key) will flop something I myself noticed within my first year playing clarinet. C) it is important that you learn about leaks and cracks. a clarinet can have their pads leak causing them to squeak, if you encounter this you should send instrument back to shop to have the pad replaced. If you buy a wooden clarinet (which I wouldn't recommend to students due to pricing) it can also crack due to humidity and changes in temperature, if this happens send the instrument back to the shop to have it repaired (trust me you can't fix this problem yourself) D) Learn the proper names of the keys. staring from top down we have the mouthpiece ligature and reeds which he actually has the proper knowledge of. next is the barrel. then the top joint, this includes the top keys, the main hole-like keys, the hole used to play low C and most other notes in the higher and lower range, fork keys (specifically for low Db, low C# and their respective notes in the higher range, the register key used for playing high notes and another hole-like key are located on the bottom, and there are four tril keys on the side. On the bottom joint there are more hole like keys, the main B, C# and alternate C key (in the higher register though students will likely only use them for low notes for the first few years) the alternate C# and B keys along with the main C and D#/Eb key, and another fork key. finally there is the bell which projects the sound.

My middle schooler needs a flute because the rental option at her school is for a top of the line instrument and just isn't a good deal long term. Thank you again!

You can tell if you know anything about clarinets that this guy does not know anything about clarinets, typical music dealer just putting thoughts in peoples heads to try get them to sell things. He could not even play the instrument, are you really going to trust him to sell you an instrument when he can not even teach someone how to play it when they go to try it out. Complete music illiterate.............. These are the people that shouldnt be teaching people thing but have people teach them.

    • @randomlibra

I agree with you. My constructive criticism: There are so many different kinds of clarinets. The bass kind, and the little one are only two of many. There are 15 that I know of, and I have played 4 of them. Bass, Eb Alto, Bb Soprano, and Eb Soprano. The most common is the Bb Soprano Clarinet. There are basically three classes of clarinet: Student, intermediate, and professional. Lower horn = Bell. Collar = Barrel. (Careful with the barrels. Some cheaper Chinese made clarinets come with TWO barrels. One is for European tuning and the other (the longer of the two) and for American tuning (A440). If the clarinet you are trying to sell comes with two barrels, chances are, you shouldn't be selling it. WTF with the cork grease? That isn't your lips and it isn't chap stick! Let's just ignore the bent key. Gotta make a sell... No, that did NOT sound good. It sounds as if it has a leak. Either in your embrasure or the instrument itself (a pad). You should probably not demonstrate the sound if it's your embrasure. If there is a leak, you can determine the leaking pad by sliding a piece of tissue paper in between the pad and the instrument, depressing the correct key to close the pad, and then playing a solid note. If the leak stops, you found the correct pad. Have it repaired. If not, then keep checking pads. If all the pads are not leaking, then your embrasure is horrible, the reed is too thick, or one of the joints has a leak (you can tell by looking at the cork). Last resort, try a different mouth piece. They are all different. Come on! I would expect a person who works in a music store to know these things. You can at least Goggle a few things before you "help" other with videos like this. If there is a French Horn video, I am probably going to lose my s@#! ;)

This bass isn't really"Neglected" or in "Rough Shape". The jack plate being gone and jack desoldered, sure. That's an issue, but there's nothing physically wrong with the guitar. This was likely a factory setup on this bass, and it likely was never touched in that department. This specifically to me isn't in need of a restoration, but a minor cleaning and setup. This really is an informative video series though.

I did end up buying a violin. I haven't used it because I can't even tune it properly with the CD. The book it came with doesn't teach notes properly and coming from an industry in fitness I feel like I should have professional assistance if I'm going to learn without creating a ton of bad habits that will be difficult to correct later. I still love the sound of the violin but I haven't made it a priority since my first attempts fizzled... I would love to have lessons though...

The only video on youtube that i found useful that wasn't trying to upsell me. Thank you very much. I wonder though, if i am buying my violin new from a music store, do i have to worry about the same things? I have never played a string instrument and I'm considering buying cheap for my first as it will be pretty banged up through hours of practice over the years ($250 max. taxes in - bow and case separate). Would it be better to make a larger initial investment for my very first instrument?
