Introducing RR1: Real Robot One - Revision 2 - a DIY 3D-Printed Desktop Robotic Arm
This video introduces the second revision of the RR1 (Real Robot One) 3D-printed desktop robotic arm, that is RR1 rev. 2 in short. RR1 is a small 3D-printed robotic arm featuring 6 degrees of freedom plus one degree of freedom for gripper altogether mimicking standard industrial robots but packed in small size. The robot features closed loop control with rotary encoders attached to each joint. RR1 is powered by 7 stepper motors (6 for axes and 1 for the gripper) that transfer torque to joints via 3D-printed split-ring planetary gearbox reducers. The revision 2 has many improvements against the revision 1 (the black robot) such as PCCF gears and encoders outside joints.

Broken PETG (Split Ring) Planetary Gearbox

A "surgery" and analysis of a broken planetary gearbox from the RR1 robotic arm (revision 1). The gearbox is made of PETG (Prusament). The accident when the gearbox broke happenned at the Make Faire 2023 exhibition at the end of day one, after running the robot all the day. The gearbox was found irrepairable so I made the new of better design and of polycarbonate with carbon fiber (Prusament PC...
Robots at IROS 2023 Part II (Demo Expo), Detroit, USA

Another robot video from the IROS 2023 conference, Detroit, USA. This covers the Demo Expo, mostly robots made by students and academics. But despite some robots look kit-like I find them often more exciting than professional robots. I tried to shoot all robots at the expo that moved or looked amazing at least (if not moving). Notice the white Doctor Octopus-like suit (Spiderman), unfortunately...

Robots at the IROS 2023 Exhibition, Detroit, USA. Not super-exciting but nice to see. The video covers almost all robots that move at the exhibition. Static robots are not covered (there were not many static robots). Some well known robots such as Kinova or KUKA robotic arms can be seen.

My name is Pavel Surynek, I am a professor of computer science and roboticist. In this video I talk about the RR1: Real Robot One robotic arm I'm developing. I describe the capabilities of the arm and describe its construction and development. I also show the connection of the RR1 robotic arm to the software and plans for the future. Unlike my other videos about the RR1 robot, this one is filme...
3D-Printed Cube: PETG vs. PC Blend with Carbon Fiber
Просмотров 174Год назад
We tested the material resistance to hammer impact. We 3D-printed 1cm^3 cubes (4 wall layers and 20% infill) from PETG and from PC Blend with carbon fiber. Then we tested each cube using the light impact of a small hammer and then using the heavy impact of a large hammer.

Assembly of the (Split Ring) Planetary Gearbox for the RR1 Robot Arm
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
I show how to assemble a 3D printed planetary gear reducer for the upper joint (elbow joint) of the RR1 robot arm. The planetary gear reducers are a key component of RR1. There are 6 of these of different sizes across the robot. Every joint (except the gripper) has its own planetary gearbox. As the gearboxes in RR1 use herringbone gears for smoother rotation, the assembly must be carried out ex...
RR1 Robot Arm Articulation Tests

RR1 is my robotic engineering project of a DIY desktop robot arm. The first prototype called revision 1, rev. 1 is finished and I am testing its dexterity, speed and programming. Few articulation tests of RR1 are shown in the video. This tests if the cables are long enough when shoulder, elbow and wrist roll so that robot is twisted round.

@pavel.surynek, I appreciate your reply. Are there any courses you would advise me to take in robotics or mechanical engineering? I may have a little problem with programming, as I have learned only the basics in ROS, such as nodes, publishers, subscribers, services, and working with micro-ROS on Arduino. I have also worked on AVR and ARM microcontroller programming with embedded systems. This is approximately my knowledge in programming. What can I study to understand everything about this project and ensure that I can execute it successfully?

Counterweight? and why did you use stepper motors? are they not less efficient and weigh more? and what stepper motors did you use? and how many Nm did you need for the bottom 2 motors? and how much does the robot weight form the first motor up? and what rpm does the motors go? what gearbox did you use? Thank You so much.

I have not yet published the files and the assembly documentation, but at least I put STLs for the shoulder planetary gearbox (the main lower joint) in my github: github.com/surynek/RR1. To build the gearbox you also need: 7 ball bearings - 16mm outer diameter, 5mm inner diameter, 6mm height, 3 bolts - approx. 48mm length, 5mm diameter, 1 bolt - approx 25mm, 5mm diameter, plus some 3mm screws. The bearings and bolts hold the planets and the sun in place. The exploded view of the gearbox can be seen here: surynek.net/_main/index.php?select=research#RR1 (bearings and bolts not shown). And not to forgot many 6mm bearing balls into the outer ring.
