I love this man’s music. His sudden death was a huge shock. Worthy of greater attention. A special talent.

Rather depressing when some random young blonde lass in the USA who has no feel for the tradition and can barely play gets tens of thousands of views playing Scottish fiddle. While a superb duo like this barely reaches three figures. People have no taste! Thankfully though you're still posting so people like us who value great playing can enjoy it.

An extraordinary tribute to a man who touched many people lives and who we all knew in different ways. I was lucky enough to come across Paddy both in his professional University life and also through Edinburgh Folk Club, where his respect for the people's 'tradition’ was perhaps most in evidence. But what a reflective, inclusive, inspirational, argumentative, laugh-out-loud, silently underpinning, supportive man of the people was Paddy (sorry, difficult to capture in a few words). So sad that a man who so obviously under his veil of diffident embarrassment was an instinctively gregarious man, was on his own in his last moments, except he wasn't as the memories captured in these videos and funding in his memory demonstrate. We could have done with a bit more of people with the breadth of vision such as Paddy, sadly denied to us, rather than the current types designed to see us through the current difficulties but lacking vision for the future, which makes the importance of the rest of us standing up in memory to Paddy’s plate and also the memory of the musicians in this hard time, who entertained us previously. Therefore, to support the musicians through the Paddy Bort fund who will take us forward to the new horizon. I give because I can, but I hope that in the future we can all come together relatively unscathed, to celebrate Paddy’s memory but also, in musical tradition at least, to put in place for the future the foundations that Paddy worked at and respected, and wanted to see.

Calum Kennedy didn't write the words to Dark Island that are mentioned. My late father Stewart Ross wrote them in 1963 to a variation of the tune. The words were copyrighted and published in sheet music. However, a dispute arose over the use of the tune, with the writer of another set of lyrics David Silver. Calum Kennedy wouldn't stop using my father's words. However, the words are now properly registered with the MCPS/PRS. Lovely work here.

Wonderful insightful uplifting lecture on one of Scotland’s towering heroes....he is up there in the Tower of Song initiating Ceilidhs among the Meistersingers...and if only one drop of that glorious conviviality reaches us we will survive this new rise of fascism around us.

Expat fiddler here feeling a little homesick - this was recorded yards from my family home. Lovely, cultured playing - someone with a sound classical technique but who is also immersed in the tradition - it's a compelling combination. I wasn't aware of Alastair's work, but I'll follow him from now on...

Does anyone know the origin of this song? I heard it at their concert in Maine, but can't find any trace of the lyrics on the internet. Was it written by them?
