For strength gains you should control the eccentric motions rather than dropping weights and slacking the control, unless if you aiming for max reps then you can allow some relax on the eccentric. If you aiming for max gains and strength, make each rep clean and go just a little slower for more time under tension. Remember you can gain a lot more muscle by putting weight down slowly. Man them thumbs is twitching, I rate you should train different holding positions on the pull-ups, try use a closed grip sometimes. I dont know what you training for, so unless you need max reps on the pull ups, try lock your arms straight between reps (as best you can)
