The Life of an Outdoorsman
Канада
Добавлен 23 фев 2021
Welcome to The Life of an Outdoorsman!
It may be different from your definition, but I do consider myself an outdoorsman in the sense that there is pretty much no other place that I would rather be than outdoors. I have been blessed with a family that encouraged getting out and enjoying God's creation. It is magnificent and I would encourage everyone to get out and enjoy it as well.
I embrace the opportunity for adventure and learning new skills. With this being said, this channel's focus is to bring you along on the many adventures that I love so much so that we can learn together.
While watching, you may find yourself in the thick of the bush trying to survive, on the water fishing, or even working on some new tool or technique that you may be able to use on your next adventure.
Please enjoy!
P.S. - If you wish to support The Life of an Outdoorsman, you know what to do (The usual RUclips stuff):)

Underwater Footage of Salmon Spawn HD
Come fall time, the salmon swim up the rivers to spawn. If you time it right, you can get fantastic sights of the fish swimming around in shallow water or even catch them jumping waterfalls.
This is a river I try to visit every year and the past few years have been truly incredible.
I hope you enjoy watching this, and as always, may God Bless Y'all.

Nagagami Lake is a spectacular place for giant walleye. I worked at a fly-in fishing lodge called Expeditions North Lodge a while back and the memories I have of being up there will always give me the urge to head back. This spring was the time and it was good to be back. I hope you enjoy the film and May God Bless Y'all. #tloao #fishing #tloaofishing #walleye

A Beautiful Day Catching Bait and Some Good Fish
I like this knot! Thank you. Are you still using it exactly the same?
Yes and no... I started messing with putting ferrules on leaders, but more on quick strike rigs for ice fishing. Those leaders are typically shorter and thicker material, so knots are more difficult. I still use the knot for long leaders.
I see. I've packed a couple of different traces to try out, as k2k is new for me. Tied your knotted version and also a flemish knot with a shall crimp for tidiness, not for strength, so I'm told. Thanks for the video and all the best!
Bong, bong, bong, bong 😂
😜
I enjoyed watching this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the excellent video. I appreciate the peaceful and relaxing background music.
Thanks eh!
Your videos have great potential but face challenges in reaching a wider audience Here are some possible reasons: 1. SEO Optimization 2. Target Audience Reach 3. Effective Use of Hashtags 4. Social Media sharing Addressing these areas can enhance your video's visibility and attract more viewers. If you need further assistance or have any questions, feel free to ask!
Thank you for the input. I'll have to try that.
This bbq last forever. Cheap to use and easy to clean with the best favor.
Can't disagree with any of that.
Fun!
It was quite fun.
Love how clear the imagery is! So neat❤
It is a good river for it. Clear water and small enough to get a good concentration of fish.
Unfortunately it was not a shipwreck, I was there when they tugged it in. Very glad you documented what was left before they salvaged it out in fall of 2023. Claiming it to be “legal” between partners, who did what, who knows, that didn’t want to pay, liability is how we remove once was.
I guess maybe there was a bit of click bait in the title. Haha. It doesn't look that much different from one either. I was unaware that it had been removed. Sad to see on many levels. You can see from the video that it was a haven for hundreds of fish.
I been doing this as well lately. I don’t usually use a swivel on mine. Used crimps for the last ones.
I actually started using crimps on some of mine as well, but I cut the crimps in half so they are not so long.
Where to start, you did a great job, but I think you made some mistakes. 1- you chose a shovel with a large raised center- not as good for a frying pan. 2- you shortened the blade reducing its use as both a paddle and a frying pan 3- if you break the handle, after you burn out the old handle , the rivets prevent fitting of a new handle. Screws would make the handle replaceable. 4- a longer handle can be shortened in the bush, but a short handle can't be lengthened.
Thanks for the comment. I agree with your points. The reason I went the way I did is so that I could beat it up (throwing, chopping, etc...) and it will hold up. I also didn't want anything too flat for the same reason. Now, if this was more of a backup type shovel that would be used once in a survival situation, then the way you described it would be definitely the way to go.
Love cookin me some eggs on one
Not sure the paint will taste good, but it is a good idea.
Is it the titanium one ? I upgraded my handle, video is on my channel
Unfortunately, it's not titanium. Just a garden shovel, but it seems like half decent steel.
@@TheLifeofanOutdoorsman as long as it does the job...
Hi Good job. *thumpup*
Thanks man!
And WHAT ABOUT Cold steel Specnaz shovel My friend ???
Wasn't available, and this one was more fun.
You can serate 1 side's edge with a triangle file to make it saw too for when you dont wanna alert the entire forest you're claiming wood.👍
Haha. That is a good idea, but I hate serated edges though.
Good job cleaning it up!!!
Thanks eh!
WHY , in the name of common sense would would you remove the flat foot metal push surfaces ? Those are there for digging , which is an essential function in survival ! Lots of soldiers survived combat in WW2 because they dug themselves a Foxhole for evading artillery barrages !
They were not removed completely. I cut them in about half. They are still functional, and my guess is the handle is short enough that it would be very awkward to use your foot on them anyway. Traditional "army" shovels do not usually have huge push surfaces either.
Looks like a fun time !!!
Twas a blast! 😉
Amazing to see these fish in their natural habitat. A wonder of God's creation for sure. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I'm glad you liked it. It is amazing.
Tree topping gone anti climactic
Haha. True.
Okay. That IS very nice. So make a sheath for it to go on your belt or ruck. I am a little dubious on the economics of your new toy. I understand that making the toy is the fun part, and I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Yet, I'd have gone second hand shovel route, myself. Breathe new life into an old piece of junk sort of thing. Hello from San Diego California. Salud! (Cheers!)
San Diego! Sweet. Part of the reason for new is that I wanted it to be a certain shape of blade (not to angled or curved) and thickness. We did not have one kicking around that was the shape I was looking for. If I had one, I definitely would have. Salud!
Way to go! One day I want a peice of those Spartans!
Not sure if they have those in alaska, but there is always mount marathon race.
@@TheLifeofanOutdoorsman been looking into that actually! Gonna have to get better at mountain trails, then I may go for it!
I'm afraid to think of what would happen to the back of my head if I tried that lol!
Haha.
To avoid the handle splitting, you have to add either a full length piece of stock or rings of stock welded along the length, otherwise there isn't enough there to male a good solid weld and it will split at some point. I took a torch and heated up the handle and coated it with a mixture of 1/4 olive oil, 1/4 coconut oil and 1/2 bees wax, let it dry wipe off the excess, repeat 2 times a day for a week then once a month. I also sharpened one side at a 23° angle for chopping and making kindling, the opposite side at 19° for slicing and making feather sticks or wood curls, with the two angled edges sharpened at 35° to aid in chopping through roots and seasoned the shovel head as you would a cast iron skillet so I can use it to cook on if needs be, added an adjustable paracord lanyard loop and wrapped the handle with no.36 twisted bank line and stainless steel aircraft saftey wire. If you make the handle fit tight and smack it home good there is no need to add cross pins or screws and it will allow you to remove the handle and add a longer one for hard or prolonged digging and/or adding a branch with and off shoot to fashion the shovel into a sort of hoe for breaking up te ground and digging trenches and to be used as a rake for clearing leaves, pine needles and other debris from a large area for setting up a tent or fire pit. Or you can use removeable wood screws or drywall screws to secure the handles, if you wish.
This is excellent. All great ideas. I'm glad you made one yourself. It is a rewarding project with endless possibilities.
In a river like that. Landing a fish is verry minimal, wouldn't waste my time in that spot
Haha. That is part of the challenge.
So Fun! Looks like you all had a great time!
Yes. It was a blast!😜
That's some good hunting right there! Nice video!
It was the best waterfowl hunting I've ever done.
@@TheLifeofanOutdoorsman I bet it was!
Looks Superb! I wanna chance at em...Lol...Happy for you that you got out there and got some loins!
Thanks. Some of those loins are on the smoker right now.
Just saw these shorts, keep going!
Glad you like them!
Awesome sibs! good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Soak it in linseed oil
This is the way!
Haha! Got a little hung up eh!
That I did.
Great effort put forth by you and your older sister! “Hooah”
Yes! We try.
Get the carbon steel CS special forces shovel if you like to chop - titanium is just too lite weight and does not get as sharp
Good point.
Looks wet! I'm gonna have to do one of these Spartans one day!
It was. The obsticles turn the boring running into a fun challenge.
Good job guys! Looks fun and tiring... Looking forward to seeing the next one in October!
Thanks. It was a blast. October is going to be tough, but I'm definitely getting excited.
Very cool I have a really old crappy shovel around here somewhere I want a spetsnz shovel I might give it a try
You should totally do it and let us know how it goes.
Super easy thanks !!!
You are very welcome!
SHOVEL!
Warriors cry for running into battle with it.
@@TheLifeofanOutdoorsman I am one of them but I hit sonic instead.
Make it heavier on the right side for heft when chopping and a little wide area opposite the axe edge to use as a better hammer.
That would be a good idea. I guess you just have to determine how much versatility you want in it. It's definitely doable, though.
I am so glad you figured out how to use the lifting tool at 17:05
Haha. Yes. It was a struggle.
It is a good thing the cast iron cooking grate did not shatter when you dropped it. The lifting took must be put in the proper slot, in the proper direction, to prevent it falling out. You have inspired me to clean my Keg this afternoon, but I will be careful not to use the wire wheel on the painted parts.
Yup. I have since leaned to use it the correct way. I think. It just seemed odd at first since the lifting point is in the middle. If not in the right way it just rotates on the hook.
We were out there that same day on a paddle board !
Ah, it was you that I talked to. I'm glad you made it over here. I learned a new word that day. Submechanophobia.
Grew up on this road. Its always loke this in the lagoon/into thr creek mouth, some days on some days off! Cool to see someone else out there
It is a nice little gem. If you can keep the mosquitos off. It is neat to hear of someone else who fishes there.
Im not sure if this would be a hardenable steel, but if you removed the handle, you could possibly heat treat the shovel. Add mud or clay to the middle and try leaving only a half inch to an inch of the edge exposed. Use a blow torch to get it up to temperature and quench it. Water will work, but isnt ideal. Try a file before and after and see if it "skates" over the blade after the quench. If successful, it will allow the edge of the shovel to better hold an edge and resist warping, while keeping the interior parts softer since they were covered with clay preventing heating. 😊
That is a great point and a whole other level to this. Typically, shovel blades are some sort of harder steel (not necessarily hardened), and you could likely harden them. This one didn't seem to loose it's edge really so I don't think I'll worry about hardening. It is a good thought, though, when making one.
Great video, just subscribed, we are headed there in 2 weeks, got any hot spots you can share?
That is great, Justin. For sure. Are you headed to Expeditions North Lodge? I'm not too sure if you are familiar with this lake, but typically, this time of year, they are a bit deeper (25-45 ft). You can get them deeper than that even, but you risk barotrauma. I like to drift in from deep to shallow dragging bottom with a jig and minnow. Bottom bouncing with a crawler harness can work well this time of year as well since they may be suspended a bit. Chucks point, twin island, timberwolf point, Debbie's island, and sunken island are the typical spots. You can ask Dave, Alex, or Adam the particulars. Unless you are going to a different lodge, then I am sure the people over there would be happy to describe it. The key is steeper drop-offs. Sorry to ramble, but I hope this helps.
Thanks so much for all of the information, this was our second year there, and we did very well. We stayed at KayVee, fished The Flats at night, and were always in the 30-45 fish range for 2 hours of fishing. Chucks point, also produced a ton of Walleye, a few decent pike and even a Burbot Curious about perch for next year, spots and techniques, and also would be cool about your story of working up there? Love your channel Thanks
Goldfish!? Interesting
Ya. They have infested this pond.
Glad I watched this cuz mine own is on its way
Right on, man!
Very neat! Agree, the history was a nice touch...chilly waters I'm sure😬
It was very chilly. I have since purchased a hood for the suit, so it won't be as bad.
