Audio Astronaut 27 - String Theory (guitar strings, tunings, Gizmotron, Danelectro 59x12 12-string)
String theory is a theory related to quantum physics, in which the entire universe is not comprised of subatomic particles, but instead made of one-dimensional strings. The vibration of those strings in a multi-dimensional universe explains all phenomena of physics and astrophysics.
In this video, I'm going to dive into all things strings, as it relates to music (particularly guitars), including different types of guitar-strings, multi-stringed instruments like the sitar and the Danelectro 59x12 12-string guitar, and the unique string-bowing guitar mechanism called the Gizmotron.

Audio Astronaut 26 - Delta (dobro / resonator & slide guitars, binaural beats, and Delta blues)
Просмотров 8511 месяцев назад
Delta is a word that means many things: In math, it represents a change or a difference between two numbers and in astronomy, it's used to refer to the 4th brightest star in a constellation, such as Delta Cephei. It's the 4th letter of the Greek alphabet, represented by a triangle… which also happens to be the shape of a river delta. And this is where the term Delta blues music comes from - a r...

Audio Astronaut Ep. 8 - Infinity and Beyond (EBow & TC Infinite Sample Sustainer)
i was literally thinking the same thing about the 80s coldwave/post-punk sound w the soft focus. it's kinda what sold me on it since my current rig is based on the chameleons (songs like view from a hill, swamp thing.) or bethany curve (songs like jettison and long beach) maybe i'll do a video on it
If you had a "lackluster experience" with the Cetus....you didn't know what you were doing. That pedal is outstanding.
That's how I feel. That pedal is a game changer for me.
amazing demo
Congrats on 500 subs.. get back to it buddy. 😉👾
He was right. This sucks.
Hands down, best video on this pedal 👨🚀👌
That's a great video brother!
The art on this one is just absolutely gorgeous
Amazing sounds!
Did you record the FX500 direct to the interface or through a guitar amp? Thx!
DI directly in... I am actually ampless, and use Amplitube (or pedals) for amp simulation when recording... when playing live (tiny venues), I feed them into a clean JBL portable stereo PA system For several of the examples, I used Amplitube in Ableton to simulate Marshall or Vox amps
@@theaudioastronaut How did you connect the FX500 in stereo? I want to have the best sound results.
@@serenorocha I use a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 recording interface, which has 6 mono inputs (but I just now got a new 4i4 today! Fewer inputs, but it's a newer generation) Do you want my 6i6? I'll send it to you for free if you DM your address and live in the States. (if you don't, then the first person who says they want it, gets it!)
@@theaudioastronaut thanks! Unfortunately i'm from Portugal!
@@serenorocha I'll be in Lisbon next week 😏
That is such a pretty pedal!
I agree. And I'm actually blown away by how it sounds (I wasn't a fan of their reverb pedal, the Cetus)... I just swapped it onto my board and am recording a new song for my album with it (I'm actually using its Swell mode AFTER Polarbear Drowner shimmer reverb.. doesn't even sound like delay/echo, but gives a massive, more lush feeling as well as subtle undulating, shoegazey modulation)
Dig the resonator action 🤙
I always wanted a resonator when I saw them in guitar shop windows... just thought they looked super cool. But once I realized that they also SOUND super cool, I was sold. And the Rogue ones are VERY affordable (Recording King is more moderately priced, but has superior sound quality)
To say it's too "on the nose" would be an understatement.
Absolutely. But a fun experiment
does the yamaha fx500b has reverse reverb
this is my new favorite channel
I have to say that was a great effort! What your driven sound is missing is the cocked wah pedal and a stereo detune (like a Boss Harmonist) I once heard Barry Goodrow mention the cocked wah, and Scholz himself say he intentionally detuned his guitar(s) a few cents. I can get a pretty convincing Rockman tone from an old Zoom G5 by: Wah>Reverb>Delay>EQ>Stereo Detune>Marshall>Stereo Out. I do however also own an old IIB Rockman headphone amp. Great vid! Edit: spelling
Stick this A.I song right up ya Bum Bum..
(let's be clear, though... only the lyrics are AI. All composition and music is human-made. I tried some AI music generators, such as Cassette AI... really not good.)
@@theaudioastronaut .Good call . I dont like sythesisers and drum machines etc just as bad. Knowing how to work machines over learning how to play instruments.
@@themelted4614 I don't necessarily agree, because it's not always about how "hard" something is to achieve. A chef can create a masterful dish, even if he didn't personally mill the wheat into flour! So for me... it's more about any sense of emotion or human connection that really gets lost with AI. Quite frankly, I feel the same way about some guitar virtuosos who have insane technical skills, but have no sense of melody and evoke no emotion at all with their playing...
@@theaudioastronaut ya cant legislate for taste. I get that on boring guitar solo s. Im reffering to the head banging single beat computer headbanging rave crap. Ya gottabe eed of ya tits to get on it. No soul or skill involved, pure chemicals. Iv got 7 songs up on here purely for fun. Wrote, some covers mostly improvised on the spot. At least it was made by a human not a machine..
I have this pedal and love it! It’s so funny you did this video in space because whenever I describe my favorite music which is Indie, Dreampop, Showgaze whatever you want to call it, I always describe it like I’m floating in space or that I would love to just be floating in space listening to this music with headphones and probably never want to come down
When I shared my video of cover songs, somebody said my music reminded them of Spiritualized, which I had never even realized but unconsciously know they have hugely influenced me, because this is one of my favorite songs: ruclips.net/video/iB7E1D_3Na4/видео.html PS. I am currently working on my first dreampop album (original stuff, not covers... also incorporating some shoegaze, slowcore, hauntology and hypnagogic pop) Stay tuned!
love this ambients, fits perfect for shoegaze stuff:3
How much did that silly costume cost? Do you think it'd hold up in a microwave oven?
Subscribbed instantly, i love your style haha
I play the sitar (amongst a few other instruments) and I also got the ravish sitar pedal, but in a stage situation I would prefer the coral sitar if I wanted to emulate a sitar without going through the motions of carrying my sitar around.
Absolutely... I kinda wish I had bought the Danelectro Baby Sitar instead of a real sitar... they were roughly the same price, but I like collecting instruments and wanted to see what the "authentic" one played and sounded like. It's enjoyable (well... not tuning it!), but I would probably play a guitar-styled one a heck of a lot more.
@@theaudioastronaut You are spot on with your comment. Tuning a sitar - the sympathetic strings in particular - is a bit of an ordeal, a most rewarding one nevertheless. But as for the practical point of view: regarding a stage situation with a band I would choose the coral sitar any day.
Love this pedal, Cloudburst is Awesome
I haven't got one of those pedals yet but I'm determined great sounds thank you ❤
Dude that kate bush cover was dope
Weak review
Hi! Do you plug your microphone directly in the microcosm ?
I'm not sure I have explored that yet, but it can certainly be done! (one issue is my voice is kind of deep/baritone, and the deeper frequencies get a little lost in the Microcosm, in my opinion. But it's worth a try! You might want to get a line-matching impedance XLR-to-1/4" transformer, if you want to plug directly in)
Hi Mr. Astronaut, Can you explain to us what audio adjustments you made to obtain this Talky effect? Thanks in advance
I do this "radio transmission" sound using High-Pass and Low-Pass filters. I do this directly within Adobe Premiere (LPF: 5000 Hz and HPF: 1000 Hz)... but you can also get this effect using these filters (or notch filter) in various pedals, or plugins for DAW (I like to use RC-20 Retro Color or Thenatan Vybz for lofi effects, including this type of filtering)
Thank you @@theaudioastronaut
Sorry so silly and boring. I know your trying but I’m looking for music. It’s not here.
I may also agree with you......but one can also leave the clip without writing this comment.
Different strokes for different folks. Unfortunately, he chose negativity, but I have to say that for the most part, the music community (guitar players, guitar pedal/effects aficionados, etc) has been far less toxic and negative than most communities, so it's kind of surprising when comments like this show up. But I take it for what it is: an opinion. Everybody's entitled to one. FWIW, the creator of the Infinite Birdwhistle plugin contained in this video loved my Kate Bush cover. Another viewer told me they liked my REM cover (in a different video) even more than the original, and another said my music reminded them of Spiritualized (which was a great honor to hear that.) I've also had multiple new subscribers just in the time since he posted this comment, and some of my videos have thousands of views and many likes... so overall the positivity definitely offsets the negativity. But he's right that this video is not the place to find what he is looking for. For one thing, this isn't a "music video" ... it's an educational demo video to show what the sounds of different effects tools sound like, so he's right that if he's looking for "music" this isn't exactly the video for that. It's also focused on ambient effects/instruments -- ie. mood and atmosphere... ambient/cinematic stuff, not the "dad rock / blues lawyer" music he seems to be into (in fact, my channel will definitely not be the place for that, although I do have a variety of tastes including bluegrass and surf rock. My next video will feature Delta blues with dobro/resonator guitars and harmonicas. But overall that is not the kind of music I do.) In my personal opinion, music doesn't get much worse than this: ruclips.net/video/j4H4Z8EBMlo/видео.html (doesn't mean the musicians are bad, and I'm open-minded to a variety of musical genres, but easy-listening jazz / elevator music is possibly the worst ever, in my book. So I am absolutely not surprised -- nor even offended -- that somebody who thinks that is the definition of "music" doesn't like my channel. I'm just confused as to how this video is being recommended to those of you who are "traditionalists" and into that kind of music. BTW, this guitar pedal is also not a good choice for jazz, blues, R&B, etc... ) Anyway, thanks for trying to encourage positivity... I think most musicians appreciate what other musicians do, even if we don't always dig the sounds being made. (As for the space theme... some people enjoy it, some people don't... but at least it's different than the loads of videos that already exist, and it's fun for me to do.)
i want your wife !
Correction: it was MORE than $1000. That's how much it goes for now, but I paid $1200 (and that was after a $120 discount!)
I’ve been hearing a lot about Fender dropping the ball on quality lately. People have been saying they’re starting to only put effort into custom shop guitars. Which sucks for your average guy who either can’t or doesn’t want to drop thousands on a guitar. It’s kinda sad, because I’ve always loved Fenders until I went in the store and saw what people are talking about with a couple of the guitars.
Yeah, there's no way I would ever be paying those prices for any guitar (and if I do decide to pony up more $$, it would probably be for a higher-end acoustic, where it seems you do get what you pay for) I just saw a telecaster shootout by Rhett Shull, and the $5000 custom shop one didn't sound any better than the Squier Classic Vibe that was under $500
Creative and fun! Good job!
Great video
This is the most entertaining video on post punk I've ever seen
I can’t believe I found you with so few views. Keep it up.,
I like this mix of some old timey science program and futuristic post-genres. It has the same vibe as those 90' sci fi movies
thanks
This was surprisingly peaceful listening to the narration. What a pleasant effect!
You put soooo much into your videos! Great job! You deserve orders of magnitudes more viewers and subscribers! Keep at it. You are on the right track!
This one took a lot of work! But I would probably make these even if I had no subscribers, because it forces me to learn, explore, expand my abilities, and play with all my toys. Besides... it's lonely out in space.
Nice review I was trying to decide between the Flamma and the Coolmusic. The Coolmusic seemed to sound more like the Walrus to me.
I actually like the chorus sounds on the Coolmusic MORE than the Walrus (I like everything else about the M1, but disappointed by its chorus)... I kept the Coolmusic on my board especially for its Detuned chorus and ringmod modes (and then I put M1 later in the chain for tremolo, harmonic tremolo, or lofi modes)
🔥 'PromoSM'
Nice videos... Sugestion: start with that radio voice, but after a while, transition to a normal voice. ;)
I know the filtering can get jarring after a while... initially I was trying to use as minimal talking as possible, but the videos morphed to be a bit teaching/explanatory (I do switch to normal voice for vocals, though)
I have that same Black Secret pedal and I'm very satisfied with the way it sounds. I didn't knew it was a clone of the Proco Rat. It's probably one of my favourite pedals in my board and I got it at a bargain price when I bought it almost two years ago.
Very pleasing to hear. Reminiscent of spiritulized
High praise indeed! I love Spiritualized (my wife and I bonded over Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space), and would definitely consider that genre or type of sound an influence!
DISCLAIMER: One guitar was harmed in the making of this film. You may have noticed that The Cloud (my Squier Strat) was used for everything except the final song. I often like to incorporate different guitars to showcase how they sound with the pedal, and I'm glad I could do that here... but it wasn't the plan. Believe it or not, The Cloud busted while playing Cloudbusting! 🤯 This Squier Affinity Stratocaster has been a great instrument -- looks good, sounds good, and plays well -- but I think mounting flat-wound 11s on it (see my last video, about surf rock, which was always one of my original intentions for this guitar) was possibly just too much for it to handle. Either that, or I'm just bad at setting up the guitar and configuring the floating bridge... in any case, the body got a crack right at the bridge, and then the mounting screw/nut actually sunk into the body! Bad news is... after about a year of great playing, the guitar seems done (again, I don't think this would happen with normal strings in a range of 9-11, so I don't want this to deter anybody.) Good news is... it gave me the impetus to finally buy a Jazzmaster (Fender 60s Vintera... stay tuned!)
I might be first view.....and I say Excellent job....and I'm subscribed...this pedal sounds awesome, and you are making it so....I'll stay tuned
Fantastic , I want one !!!
Thanks, I needed this!!! If I was you I would employ S M Zeus!
11:39 what chords? ❤️
The telecaster is tuned to FACGCE, and then they are simple 2-finger chords as shown at the 11:07 mark. I learned them from Trevor Wong... check out his video! ruclips.net/video/CV-lrw6uNXA/видео.html
Catalinebread Soft focus or Keeley Parallax?
I haven't tried the Parallax, but I have been very underwhelmed by the sounds of other Keeley soft focus pedals (Loomer and Realizer)
Get a Roland Super Chorus (or the Warm Audio CE-1 clone for the more vintage analog version), and run a good reverb + delay into it. Roll your own version! Honestly I love the FX500 chorus, which is the soul of this sound, so I recommend the real thing if you don’t mind having to send signal to it from a switcher (it doesn’t have FX on/off unless you can find their matching control pedal).
