It looks like your example has the six blade Iris from the earlier Summar lens. I believe the last ones made reverted to this type and various theories exist as to why Leitz did that.
What’s the image result
Question! Are you shooting raw then coverting it to b&w or just shooting b&w jpegs? Tonally they look great! I have the original a7 and I agree that the black and white shines so much!
They are mostly straight out of camera jpegs, some are slightly edited jpegs. Sometimes I use the "high contrast mono" picture effect.
beautiful 🥹
Yours is like mine, the 6-bladed version. I am on the hunt of a good uncoated 10-bladed version (serial number < 601,000 something)
If you ever buy a this lens that say, has a dot of fungus on the rear element toward the edge, and you're not a lens repairer, Rotate the lens so that the rear element is flush with the edge of the rear mount, then place the lens on the warm area of your gas stove for 20 minutes. (it's more hot that warm) Your fungus is now D.O.A. . I had no problems with the lens from this treatment...no sticking, no focus or iris tightening up, etc.
Great tip. I wonder if this treatment could also help loosen up some old helicoid grease.
One coming in the mail attached to a Yashica body. Under 30. Seller not the guy to ask if the mount is M42 or Yashica Contax. Early Sears Auto 55mm 1.4's were M42. We'll see. Not my first. But lenses get problems just looking at them, so I bought this one as backup. And the price...! I probably have a third one I forgot I bought...
As I have learned Chinon did in fact produce its own lenses. But, the story of this lens is a little different. This lens was produced in cooperation with Alpa Swiss. Chinon produced one camera I think Alpa 3 for them. It was also sold as Chinon CE-II memotron. Tomioka has produced a few lenses for Chinon, but it was written Tomioca lensesTomioca on those lenses. The case of Yashica is different. Yashica bought Tomioca and then all lenses were tagged as either Yashica or Zeiss lenses.
I just bought one yesterday, June 21, 2024, and I'm very impressed with it. I used it on my Sony A7RV and the results were a bit unusual but in a great way.
Nice!

What are your top 10 dream lenses, and do you already own any of them? Thanks!
I would still like to try the Pancolar 1.4, Planar 1.4 for Contarex, Contax G series lenses, Canon LTM lenses, and Nikkor lenses for Contax RF. These days I prefer taking photos to collecting lenses, but it's a good reason to make videos.
That's a good dog i can tell !

are these lenses related to the mamiya 55mm f1.4? thanks for the vid!
I think so. I just looked at my Mamiya 55 1.4 and it also has the flat rear element, so it's probably another version of the same lens.
I tried using 28mm for 3 weeks. when I switched back to 58mm it was an alien experience. It's good to switch to wide now and again. tyvm for the vid.
I have a similar experience every time I use an 85mm. Everything is too close.
next underrated lens? Hanimex 35mm f2.8! it's not underrated - it's just very bad in a very bad good way.
Planned to buy XT10 next month to replace my canon 600D and thanks to this video for already said a lot.. Since I only got $200 and still can't afford the XT2 or XT20 one 🥲 I really hope it will suits well with me because I take photo for mostly commercial job
Looks like an old Minolta lens.
What camera did you use it on? Was chinon an aftermarket lens maker?
Panasonic S1. From what I found, Chinon made cameras and lens barrels, but outsourced all of the glass.
I've owned all three. I sold the Revuenon and the Rikenon, but I kept the Sears as it was slightly better all around. Maybe because it was in near mint condition as well. SN# 270044.
Yes these are M42 mount i adapted to my l mount Lumix S1
Thanks for remembering one of my favorite lenses of all time. I regret selling mine. I currently own the Alpa 50mm 1.7 macro which is a rebadged chinon. And is absolutely lovely for video.
Those images are very nice. Aside from the cheap build quality, the lens seems to have excellent image rendering. It's my understanding that the Fujinon 55mm f2.2 lens is an M42 screw mount. It's time for me to buy a few different adapters for that lens mount. Apparently I'm missing out on some really nice and affordable lens options. These are great videos with wonderful still images. Thank you for sharing your art, and your knowledge.
Thank you for the kind comment. Yes, there are LOTS of lenses for M42 mount that are very good and very cheap. For years you could find this lens selling for $20.
Great video and great photos. Just bought this little camera three days ago with the 18-55 f/2.8- f/4 for $200 Canadian at a Salvation Army in near mint condition. Just wondering if you use a specific recipe for your bnws. Cheers!
Great find! I use the monochrome red filter, max contrast, with a circular polarizing filter. All jpgs with this camera.
lovely its a great lens
I LOVE old glass! but ALL of my Legacy lens's say Nikkor
I used to have a bunch of great Nikkor stuff, 28 f2, 35 1.4, 15 f5.6, 85 1.8, etc, but I sold it all to pay for a trip. I really regret it now.
would it help if you discuss the Mount? Nikon, Canon, etc
Yes! Thank you. Most of my old stuff is M42 and I just take it for granted.
Solid - feels like it's machined from a solid block of metal; slow to respond to the controls, slow to focus, low maximum ISO, but in good light it still produced great photos...... plus it's got my birth year marked proudly on it. What's not to like about it in 2024??
I just found your channel and I love it! Your videos are the perfect length and your photography skills are impressive, not to mention the interesting lens choices each time. Thanks for sharing :)
Excellent comment. Thank you.
How did you get those panoramas? Is it just cropped in because the sides of those panos are really smeared
Yes, crop. The Lumix S1 can shoot jpegs in 65:24 xpan aspect ratio.
I own one , and I have taped it to prevent that it collapses on my M10M
I own this lens. I use it with my Voigtlander R3M. With Ektar 100 film, it produces jewel like color. I think the bokeh quality at f2 rivals a Lomo Petzval lens for swirly, smearing goodness. You're absolutely right about collapsing the lens. I wouldn't put this on a digital camera. That said, it's a wonderful lens that I think goes under appreciated.
What a coincidence, I currently use a A7R and thinking about switching to S1. Are you happy with the S1? To you see the weight/size as a hindrance for longer photowalks?
I really like the S1. The size isn't an issue on longer photowalks when I am close to home, but it will probably prevent me from using it as a travel camera. I plan on making a video about the S1 in the next few weeks.
Thanks for the feedback. Looking forward to your S1 video.
Great video and nice photography 👍🏻‼️
do you think it is safe to use on M240 when extended and never collapsed?
yeah, it takes quite a bit of effort to collapse it.
“The price of the devil” hahaha this was such an entertaining and different video. Also love all the sample images
Funny enough, I have three of them under the Auto Chinon brand name.
Very cool images. That's a great camera set up.
Me when i heard L39 🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉
What is YOUR favorite travel lens?
Thank you for posting, beautiful pics! Do you make album covers? I saw a great pic of the sky that I would love to you for a album/cd cover, What can I do to license it from you? Thank you kindly
I had to have one too. I put a pinhole body cap on it and shoot at the highest ISO in black and white ...
The digital Pen F is the ultimate Pen, still goes for crazy money even 8 years after release. I wish they would make a digital Pen FT instead of re-releasing the OM-1 Mk.3 again and again
You scored! I have one and would buy another one if I saw it for $100. I still use mine and am always happy with the results.
