That's horrible! You can't swim very well when you're panicking! I have been swimming since I was 3 months old and I never used floaties but that's also only because my mother was a swim teacher and lifeguard. We also went swimming every week.

Terrible parenting, but lets look at the facts: babies do know how to swim (proof is my sister, still alive after 18 years), panicking makes it harder to swim, you will gradually float if you stay calm, and removing fingers off the edge of a pool from a kid trying to leave a pool grants you the magic of being pushed in yourself, without warning.
