Yes she does seem to struggle with her voice...i bet she tried to improve it meanwhile, and chose a heavier sound that was even less healthy than her previous chest voice...

She sings low and the grunts you hear are Mark's.

You are right.I saw her too a week ago and she was AMAZING.Everytime she sang her top range vocals I felt chills on my spine.Her voice live is really really good.

The worst thing about Simone's voice is a fact that she really can sing. I was at Epica's concert in 2010 and the redhead was just brilliant. I don't know why on the youtube recordings she sounds so horrible... :(

extraño a la metalera sexy peliroja que vestia como una verdadera gotica y solia dar conciertos muy buenos y hacer headbang ,adems de que tenia mucha actitud ....Ahora solo esta estatica en un solo lugar,con otra vestimenta ,con otra actitud muy diferente ..se ve agotada como si ya no le interezara su grupo :/

I hate when people say the grunts add nothing to the music... don't you hear the dynamic that it adds to this song? It gives me shivers. It's all about the pain they feel and through the contrast between Simone's voice and Mark's voice you can really feel it. It IS an important part of this band. And sure Simone would be a great singer on her own, but that's not all Epica is.

I've actually liked Mark's vocals all the way through, even though at the beginning they weren't quite as awesome as they are now. I prefer multiple voice types/styles within music, but I do listen to bands that only growl/scream. For me it's pretty much, if I like it, I listen to it, if I don't, I don't. Works well for me :)

@tremapar Wow, I totally agree with you! I thought at first that I would like a short version of Chasing the Dragon, but without Mark's voice... the song losts 90% of the meaning! I didn't even downloaded the song, I actually almost hated it. He is such a important part for the meaning in that song... Maybe the song that his voice was most needed! The same occured with The Phantom Agony in "short" version, but in Chasing the Dragon, they made a pretty mistake...

@theforgottenone407 Yeah, when it's not "well done", that sounds terrible; I don't know many vocalists that sing in that way, but hearing Mark's voice in some parts of The Phantom Agony version of Façade of Reality... it sounds strange. Actually, the only song in first album in which I like his vocals is Run For a Fall (WWTYWU versions of the songs are SO MUCH better!). But I must say that I can't listen to a band in which there's only a vocalist like him... Well, that's it =)

@sheila1035 Exactly. I like grunts/growls, but I'm picky about them. If the person sounds like they are killing their voice/ have already killed their voice, I generally don't like it. eg, the guest vocalist in Guardians of Asgaard by Amon Amarth--I don't like his growls. But Johan Hegg (vocalist of Amon Amarth) has this deep primal growl that sounds effortless and I love his voice. Other faves: Mark Jansen, Arien, Roberth Karlsson, Chrigel Glanzmann, Alissa White-Gluz, etc.

@theforgottenone407 (continuation) ...but Epica is such a great band with a so unique style that even if I HATED Mark's grunts I would never stop listening to the band! What would songs like Façade Of Reality, Run For a Fall, The Phantom Agony, Chasing The Dragon or Consign To Oblivion sound like without Mark? He's very important to the message of these songs, mainly. These songs wouldn't be the same without him!

@theforgottenone407 That's exactly my point of view! I must admit that I didn't like Epica at first sight, I wans't warmed to Mark's style of singing. So, I didn't listen and kept listening to Nightwish and Within Temptation. But later I watched to Never Enough video once and I started to like... Then, I started to watch to some other videos, and I couldn't help loving them. I can't say I really love this style of vocals (even loving Mark's part in songs like Run For a Fall or Living a Lie)...

Is it just me or did she look tired? :( I'm sure she was though, I mean concerts are draining, but even when she exhausted, she still preforms so beautifully!!!! Best band of all time, hands down.

@masterleonnoel Exactly! Diversity is the key. If each band sounded the same we would get tired of music very quickly.

@Elsidu13 Oh and to clear something up, Ev has experimented with harsh male vocals. From their Origin album the song Lies. RUclips search Evanescence - Origin - Lies, and listen to from 2:50 onwards. Just for the record I do like Evanescence, but call them what they are, they are not anywhere near Epica. The only reference people draw is female fronted band, and so constantly try to compare the two.

I have to vent a bit: Seriously people, when a band has incorporated a certain aspect to their music SINCE DAY ONE, why then, 10 years later, are you still bitching about it, and how the music would be better without it? It's an integral part of their sound so either deal with it or go find something else to listen to!

@Elsidu13 Evanescence is not even on the same level as Epica. Not even close. Ev is pop-rock with a goth metal influence. Epica is SYMPHONIC METAL. You don't like growls, go listen to a band without them. Epica has always used them as part of their sound. They've been around for 10 years, so if you haven't come to terms with that by now, you really should. Epica= great music, great lyrics, and 2 distinct vocal types: clean female vocals AND harsh male vocals.

I have 2 comment about the grunts and growls. I don't like it. Simone is a great singer and they should keep it that way keep keep away the growls and grunts. Without that it can be a great band. Evanescence, Within Temptation and other bands don't growls and grunts......sooooo BAN IT

@Deke1 The "stupid" grunts and growls are an integral part of the Epica sound, and have been since day one. Without them, it would not be the same. It adds depth, the contrast between the metal and the symphonic, the harsh vocals and the clean vocals, is what Epica is about. If you can't come to terms with that by their 5th album, then perhaps Epica is not the band for you.

@Deke1 I see where you are coming from, but I don't think they should completely remove harsh vocals. I do think they add to the music. One motif in the tone of their music has always been contrast, in light vs. dark, soft vs. harsh, etc. That's what makes them interesting and exciting. Chasing the Dragon is one of my favorite songs and I think the radio edit sucks ass because they took out most of the bridge, which includes grunts as well as other things, and that makes the song not as potent.

@Deke1 I'm not agree. They are free to do anything they want. If this is the expression selected i'll respect that. In my opinion with the growls had create a good contrast with the beutiful voice of Simone, that's part of the music like other great symphonic bands like Haggard or Rhapsody.

I swear, band members should never try to get the audience to clap along because 1 out of 5 people will never be on time and it sounds laughably bad because of it..
