How to make a sundial tutorial - placing the dial in the garden
And so the final part of making the sundial is to install it in the garden. Luckily the sun was out so the job of aligning the dial to accurately tell the time was made much easier. Just a matter of firmly pinning the stand into the ground and letting the sun do its work

How to make a sundial artwork Tutorial - The final touches

The Sundials are nearly ready. But to get here, a whole load of smaller processes have been needed. The wood has been blackened and waxed using a vinegar and iron solution which reacts with the iron in the oak to create a deep black dye (iron tannate). Screws and bolts have been fixed together and the gnomons have been secured with thin pieces of brass All that's left is to do is to get the dia...
How to make a sundial artwork - casting the concrete post tutorial

The final big bit of 'making' with these sundials is casting the vertical support for the horizontal dial to sit on. Making concrete is actually a very simple process, by mixing cement, sand, chippings and water I can pour the mixture into a pvc downpipe to create a solid post. By inserting a metal threaded rod into the centre of the drainpipe mould, I can make sure the concrete itself is suppo...
How to make a sundial tutorial - Crafting and carving the oak

The second instalment of the oak carving. It's somewhat more of the same, the process of removing material using saws, drills, chisels and files. But The oak is starting to be formed into shape with channels and groves that are beginning to look like chasms and cuts in rock. The other crucial part is starting to create relevant holes so that i can position the laser cut stainless steel pieces t...
Welding a steel support tutorial - How to make a sun dial

All the elements of the sun dials are coming together, and it's now time to think about how they will be displayed. The horizontal sundial is a little more straight forward, the carved oak base is inherently sturdy and seeing as it has a concrete post supporting it, it should naturally find a firm footing. The vertical sundial is trickier - seeing as it has a thin profile it lends itself to fal...
How to make a sun dial tutorial - carving the oak beams in the studio

Now that the wood has been hewn from the oak, it's time to start refining. This is a long ol' process in which I need to gradually carve the oak for both sundials into some form of geological formation. Wood working and wood carving is pretty new to me so my skills aren't particularly refined. However apart from nearly losing a fingernail and getting minor RSIs it's actually quite a soothing pr...
How to make a sun dial tutorial - Hand crafting the stainless steel elements in the studio

Now that I have all the laser cutting in the studio, it's time to put it all together. Most important is to file down the apertures for the gnomons to fit tightly. Then it's a matter of sanding the surfaces to a smooth finish and then bolting all the pieces together. making a stainless steel sculpture using laser cut pieces and brass bolts in actually a bit like putting together a clock. And in...
How to make a sun dial tutorial - Unboxing the laser cut stainless steel

This is always an exciting bit of any new sculpture that uses laser cut metal elements. It's the first time that the drawings - that sometimes take weeks to work through - develop a physicality. It's also means you get a real sense of what the final sculpture will be and allows more concrete decisions to be made about how all the elements of the structure will come together. So here is a video ...
How to make a sun dial tutorial - selecting and rough cutting the oak beams in the studio

The first step in making the sundial is to create two solid bases that the metal pieces can 'hang' or 'sit' on. I'm using oak here and it's a hard material work with because.... well, it is itself, very hard. I realise much of this process would have been made easier with the use of a chainsaw, but seeing as my approach to safety is dubious, I decided the array of rusty old tools I had to hand ...

Well, the algorithm put you in my recommended list. I like the details in process and thought process, but I have to say I mostly skipped ahead. I am deeply in the list of folks that wants to see the end product before I watch the whole video. It does two things for me as a viewer who actually makes things 1) it let's me anticipate your techniques and then learn new things when you vary from that and also allows me to introspect the question "was my way wrong or just different?" 2) avoid watching stupid clickbait better suited for tiktok that fill the subreddit r/diWHY So, not sure who your intended audience is, but seeing that you were brand new I thought I'd offer my two cents. Will be watching the next few videos regardless. Good luck!

Thanks man! Yeah TOTALLY new at this - all points very welcome! Tbh it started as kinda just documenting one bit and then got carried away. I’ve also only just finished them so kind of found making the videos was a useful way of driving me onto the next process / only have the concentration to edit a bit at a time at any rate - thanks for watching hope the final reveal will be worthwhile!
