How to Layout out a Bowling Ball in 2023! | Storm VLS Layout System Fully Explained!
I wish there was something like this for the thumb, excelt for shrinking. In league i have to add pieces of tape throughout the games its a pain
@bowlersvault Great video explaining the dual angles, typical tweener here Norm Duke style, just about to drill a purple hammer pearl, do you think i will ruin it if i do kind of an axis layout with the pin 1½ inch from my PAP if my intention is to play the twig? or would i be better of just doing a 4 inch pin and increase the VAL angle to like 60 degrees for a more controlled and smoother backend?
@@henkeman300 in my professional opinion, your safest route will be doing a 4 inch pin and increasing the VAL angle to get a more controllable roll off the end of the pattern. I think it will do you a lot more justice especially on a variety of conditions instead of the 1 1/2 inch pin. Also to add (this is just extra info) and feel free to not use this info if you so choose to, because you’re a tweener like myself, typically you will here most people say this, but people with urethanes today generally go as strong as they can and make it try to respond to friction as much as it can. This is why I have always gone anywhere from 3 3/4 to 4 inch pin and a 20-30 degree VAL. We do this because we can always smooth out the surface of the ball to give us our desired reaction if need be. I can’t think of many people with large VAL angles on urethane equipment unless it’s going to be the 2nd or 3rd urethane they have in the bag for later in the day. However, do what you think is best for your game! That’s how we learn and find out what works best for us as players!
@@bowlersvault thank you very much for the input, already abandoned the axis layout and will follow your advice and make it a 4 inch pin-pap with a 45-55 degree val ❤️
@@henkeman300 That’s what I was hoping you would do!
I just got my exotic gem drilled. My PAP is 4 13/16 and up 9/16. I bowl high rev with a bowl speed is averaging 17 to 19mph. I stand more left and cross to right. He drilled 20x4 1/4x55. Does that sound about right? With that layout what should the ball do in your opinion
With that layout based on your style, the exotic should read and hook early while providing good shape downlane. For you and your arsenal, this should be a stronger layout for you and I would not go any stronger on other equipment.
I wish our bowling alley had where you can sample them.. is that ever a thing? I have mix of brands but they were given to me. I dont know what i should be using still. Confusing
Wonderful explanation and the detail of what the angles do. Thank you!!
I have to have that ball
Is the the hook monster spay
yes
223 w it!
Stupid
It might be hard for me using my thumb and getting my hand position like that to hook it
practice makes perfect!
Bro is trying hard against grandma
I was trying so hard that the other team we were facing didn’t show up 😬😬😬
What is that thing in the background i guess u sit the ball in it?
I use it to find bowler’s PAPs
@@bowlersvault I have another question. So depending on your specs as in tilt, rotation, rev, speed, one layout numbers will be different than another's as in I have 20°tilt and lower rotation I am more flat handed say someone with low tilt and high rotation would use a different layout or would work best for them and may not for me. So my question is, I'm sure im making it more confusing... what type of layout should I be using.??? Of I'm making sense. Another thing bowling balls as in. High rg balls for me I noticed go straight, go long for ever. So I personally should stay away from them and go for mkre of a lower to med rg?
@@StephRenee812 With your tilt being on the higher side, I would normally stick with lower RG bowling balls. Its always good to have 1 or 2 high RG balls, but you will most likely find more success with lower RG balls. If you ever find some of your bowling balls going to long as well, I would recommend changing the surface to something lower grit for more traction
? Looks to be there still
Can you do a video on laying out a ball for a two handed bowler or is it basically the same ..thanks
i will post a two handed layout video soon!
Great that's ...my son is a two handed bowler and people are telling him that his balls are layed out wrong and it got into his head so I want to make sure and show him the video when yo post it ...thanks again
@@hawserdog2 definitely. Be sure to sub and turn the post notifications bell so you know when I upload it! Should be sometime this week!
Yessir I love this ball I already shot 268 in league with it on fresh 💯💯🔥🔥
yessir great shooting bro!!!!
Would you recommend this ball for a first ball? Getting into the sport but for fun and non competitive. If not what would you recommend? Thanks!
It really depends. Honestly the best person to ask is your local pro shop because they know a lot about the game. The sublime might be too strong for someone who throws a slower shot with high revs but might work for someone who throws low revs low speed or high revs high speed.
Hi! I am very happy to hear that you are picking up the game of bowling! I work in a pro shop, so I deal with this question quite a bit. As long as budget is not in question, any ball could be your first ball. At the end of the day, its a stronger, hybrid symmetrical on the market at the moment and its a damn good ball. Especially if your purpose at the moment is for this to be something fun to do, then go for it! I've sold many higher end balls for people who wanted them as their first ball and they're having just as much fun as if they had a lower end ball! If you like the look of the Sublime, then go for it!
Nicely explained. 👌
The next Zen. 😊
YES
Explain in more detail please what you mean by let the thumb do the rest for you
Hi Jim! Glad to hear from you. This was a slip up. I meant to say “let the fingers do the rest for you.” Right when I accidentally said “thumb,” there is a pop up on the screen that says “fingers.” Check out my patreon page in the description of my videos if you’re interested in virtual lessons, arsenal building, and more to elevate your game!
@@bowlersvault oh OK. I was wondering, because some of the pros like Chris Barnes and Stu beef Stu Williams talk on their podcast, they do talk about the thumb that sometimes Stu Williams grabs the heck out of his thumb if he wants to hook the ball more..he said a lot of pros grab the thumb to create more hook, it’s not always relaxed, so that’s why I was just wondering.. I have tried grabbing the thumb more and it definitely does make the ball hook early
@@JSBowling2011 I would agree with that. Sometimes you have to muscle the ball if you want to manipulate the ball in a certain way!
Keep up the great work!
Thank you good sir!
The DualAngle seems so much easier to me.. and is way faster to lay out. Is there something about the VLS that makes it a better layout??? Cuz I'm not seeing anything special.
Not sure where the information is coming from about VLS being better than Dual Angle. They both do the same exact thing. Instead of degrees, you work with inches. Really is the only difference. If Dual Angle is easy for you, great dude. Every layout system that is widely used in the industry is easy for me. I still use Dual Angle for customers from time to time.
なんか×2.0再生してるみたいにボーリングの玉が速い(|| ゚Д゚)ハヤイ…
I thought the last line where your PAP should be the center of your grip? It doesn’t looks centered to me. 😢
the last two lines you draw on the ball are the midline, then the center line. They are both perpendicular to one another. Where they both intersect is where the center of grip is
I totally agree I was watching the video telling my friend I can’t believe you skip the pi but then it was the winner totally agreed I have that one paired whit zen gold label that’s my 1 2 punch
My favorite is still the Phaze 2
My favorite ball is the one that is striking
The real correct answer!!! ^
@@bowlersvault If you ain't drillin', you ain't tryin' - LOL. The Eternity PI is a great ball, but in my opinion, folks may be able to stay in the Magic Gem for longer.
I just got my Magic Gem drilled I must say it is stronger than the Exotic and seems stronger than the original Gem. Have my Magic Gem drilled, 35 X 4 X 30.. its a nasty beastie. Pin just above bridge
Good layout for that ball in general. You’re right with it being nasty! People are missing out if they don’t have one in their bag right now…
@@bowlersvault Agreed 100%!!
Nice video. Looks like you matched up well with the Eternity Pi with the lanes you were on for this review. You have a relatable style. I am trying to decide between the Perfect Mindset, BW 2.0 Hybrid, Eternity Pi, and Magic Gem for the top, first out of the bag ball for tournaments. Like the Highlander, there can be only one. 😊 Thanks for the content.
Eternity Pi and Magic Gem are crazy good and some of the more versatile asymms on the market. I would also say the same from the widow and mindset from what I have heard and seen! I shot 300 with the magic gem a month or so back, and the Eternity has been lights out for me and a couple of my customers.
"Promo SM" ✨
I think if you knock that Reacta Gloss off with a light hit of a 3K CTD pad, you may get just a little more continuation through the pins to carry the corners. VEBO is definitely the ball to go to in transition. I was actually picking up my Hustle M-M a few weeks ago when my PSO was taking pre-orders for the VEBO... I just rolled a 289 with the Hustle a few days ago after knocking off the shine with a 3k CTD pad.
I agree. Even 4K and I think it would shape so much better
@fullsendbowling yes, I picked up a pack of CTD sanding pads, and it has made a huge difference with how my game is played, adjusting the ball to my style instead of adjusting my style to the ball.
@@CliftonDon74 Yeah CTD pads are definitely the way to go. Best in the business for sure
@@bowlersvault thanks for sharing your feedback with this ball review. I look forward to the next one. 👍
Cool video. Try showing more close up shots of the ball itself. And investing in a microphone would help a lot.
Gotta start slow my guy
idk why the color of the video is like this. Weird
Don't be too hard on yourself. It's fine. You have better quality and content than a lot of the other folks starting up their bowling channels. Appreciate what you are doing to educate the masses and grow this sport.

the perfect start to the video. Thank you sir!
@@bowlersvault No problem, I was doing bad at bowling practice today so I looked at some videos on how to hook the ball correctly
Hi. Is there an advantage in drilling using the dual angle or standard drilling?
Hi Martez, I am not too sure what you mean by standard drilling. Feel free to expand on that. I am assuming you mean putting the pin above the bridge or pushing the pin to the right of the ring finger (for right handed players). Basically your two “standard” layouts. There is a huge advantage using dual angle. You can fine tune the ball 10x more for players or yourself. I would recommend using some type of layout system in order to drill the ball the way you want the motion to look. Again, it’s more of a fine tuner.
I'm new here and don't have a clue what all those terms mean or what they do.
New to bowling! Nice! You will learn as time goes by. If you would like a breakdown of the VLS system, i recommend watching Storm’s 3 part pin buffer layout system video. It really helps! Glad to see you join the bowling community!
how do u have the new gem already when it doesnt release for another 2 weeks

@@bowlersvaultso even if ur on storm staff u can get other brand bowling balls too
Thank you sir that was very helpful. Now I need to find pap
Pretty sure that’s the regular gem
It definitely would have been if i was throwing the OG Gem 😂. I was throwing the new Magic Gem lmao

Nice video i have a Phase 2 50×4 3quarters ×35 its great i also have a Zen Soul i bowl on a travel league and the problem is i mostly use shiny stuff because no VOLUME OF OIL.Zen phase 5 Gold Label. New balls to strong.
Love the gold label. Zen ball good!
Nice directions sir. Thank you 😊
Anytime Sir!
@fullsendbowling one more question the last number on the Dual Angle the lower the # more smooth or more sharper off the spot. Thanks 👍
@@anthonydorazio9650 Hi Anthony! So for Dual Angle, the lower the number for the last angle = sharper/quicker response off the spot! This is the same for VLS too
I agree.. love this layout for drilling.. i am 2 handed..
I will be posting a 2LS video soon. I would definitely recommend a 2LS drilling in the future for you!
I liked the video but I would have liked to see fresh house pattern. I already have this ball and really like it on fresh oil to see what other bowlers do on fresh house pattern
Thanks for the like! The one thing viewers do not get to see most of the time are shots on broken down pairs. We need to see how these new releases react on transition, not only when they are fresh. It gives a better idea what the ball may look like rather than seeing me throwing it on fresh like everyone else may do. I appreciate the comment though!
This ball good for transition too I played all 3 games with this ball
@@youngvic22 yessir it is! Really good to see that out of a solid asymmetrical!
Ive got one drill for specific for fresh oil end up.till.the end using it..

Yeah this ball seems to be one of those where you can use it for a block or more! That’s great to see!

Athery's chart is a useful tool for determining ballpark values for a given set of bowler metrics in the dual angle layout system. In a very real sense, this chart is the foundation of the system. This basically allows you to easily and consistently calculate the median or "benchmark" layout for a given bowler style, on a typical house shot. All other layouts originate from this initial calculation. Note: on symms, the distance from the center of thumbhole to the PIN is a significant variable. 6.75" is minimum RG and max diff. All other values increase the RG of the X-axis and consequently reduce total diff.
good to use for people getting their feet wet into experimentation of layouts! Definitely would recommend for beginner and intermediate bowlers!
Never hears if it
Can you do one for lefty’s?
It would be the same process but you would make your arcs on the left side of the bowling ball. Think about watching the video if it was mirrored!
hey I"m your number 100 subscriber! Jim
Thanks Jim! Much appreciated sir!
Can you also show how the ball react on the lane after drilling your layout. It would be easier to understand how a ball roll when you do a specific layout.
I understand where you are coming from, however I do not see the value in showing what it looks like after creating a layout video. Everyone throws it differently, factors of the house/lanes, etc. If it were to be a comparison video, then absolutely whether that be a comparison between bowling balls or layouts. Having me throw a ball after I drill it up during a layout video wouldn’t do any justice. Sure, it will give you a decent look, but not to the entirety that it needs to be to fully push the concept. If you wish to see how a ball rolls after a layout, I recommend watching Storm’s Pin Buffer video series. There are three parts to the series, and each video explains how different pin-to-paps, psa-to-paps (in this case because it’s a dual angle video it would be called the Drilling Angle), and pin buffers (in this case it would be the VAL angle because of Dual Angle) look with three different drilling patterns.
Whats your speed and rev if i may ask looking to add this ball Whats your layout on it? I also have the summit as well i think this ball would pair great with it
In the video, I state that the layout is a VLS 3x4.5x2.5. About 14.8 speed, rev rate i’m not sure, but I would say low-medium rev rate.
