As I've reflected on Calvinism (including my own past affinity), I think what drives this line of thinking is a desire to paint God as incapable of permitting human agency. Although comparing Arminianism and Calvinism both rely on logical inference, rather than a reliance on purely scriptural exegesis, it seems that Calvinism has more leaps to be made. Irresistible grace - the linchpin. If God gives human agency, grace is resistable. The Calvinist must conclude that humans cannot resist. Curiously, the scripture lends the most support to the opposite conclusion... that humans consistently choose to follow their own wisdom. Unconditional election - an explanation as to why only apparently some are saved Limited atonement - an explanation necessary to explain how God's work is apparently ineffectual for some Perseverance - a logical conclusion if Gods grace is irresistible and believers are unconditionally elected These all stem from a denial of human agency, which runs contrary to the mountain of scriptural evidence that shows God wanting to partner with humanity, and that when humans choose otherwise God gives them over to themselves. Fortunately ours is a persistent God.
