When Dr Penelope Gordon was headhunted to go and work in Doha, Qatar, her sole experience of the Middle East had been a brief luxury break in Dubai. In Doha, she headed up medical leadership and education in a set of hospitals ... and found it a very different experience from working in the NHS. In this extract from her book, '800 Days in Doha', she shows how she managed to find the humour in dealing with a culture that could be baffling and opaque, and turn her experience into an adventure.
