This Place in History: The Rockingham Meeting House
One of the oldest surviving places of worship has been lovingly restored in the town of Rockingham. The Rockingham Meeting House was built in 1787 and was continuously used through the 1860s, when it was abandoned when Bellows Falls became an industrial hotspot along the Connecticut River. It was unoccupied until 1907 and vandalized, but was soon restored and refurbished and is once again open to the public. Vermont Historical Society Executive Director Steve Perkins and ABC 22 & Fox 44 Anchor Mike Hoey continue their visit to Bellows Falls to learn all about it.

This Place in History: Burlington's Texaco Beach

The Burlington waterfront has long been home to various industrial sites. Texaco Beach is one of them: it's now Burlington's urban reserve, but you can see plenty of signs of its use as a working waterfront. For decades, it was the site where barges would land to pump gas and oil into tanks, which would then be distributed throughout the state. Vermont Historical Society Executive Director Stev...

This Place in History: A Monument to Robert Burns

Standing in front of the Vermont History Center in Barre is a statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns. Why is there a statue in Vermont? Barre was home to scores of Scottish immigrants who came to work in the city's granite quarries, and brought with them their love of Burns' poetry. Local enthusiasts came together to form a chapter of a Burns Club, and erected the statue in 1899. Vermont Historic...

Since 1825, Newfane was home to the Windham County Jail: the facility was used to lock up local offenders, and at one point, was also home to a hotel wing, (which counted Theodore Roosevelt as one of its guests). As Vermont consolidated its prison system, the jail fell out of use and was recently vacated by the Windham County Sheriff's Office. The Historical Society of Windham County has since ...

Vermont has a rich railroad history, but its largest city, Burlington, has long had difficulties with rail travel. ABC 22 & Fox 44 anchor Mike Hoey and Vermont Historical Society Executive Direct...
