The Great Engine House Project - London Museum of Water & Steam Crowdfunder Appeal 2024
The Great Engine House is a Grade I listed engine house, which is home to the gigantic Grand Junction 100 Inch and 90 Inch engines, and is the jewel in our crown at the London Museum of Water & Steam.
However, without donations to fund conservation, The Great Engine House and the engines it contains could be lost forever. We are asking urgently for your support to save these pieces of London's history.
Visit our Crowdfunder at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/great-engine-house.
Learn more about the history of the Great Engine House and hear from the people directly involved in the project by watching our film. Discover the challenges and what needs to be done to restore the Great Engine House and th...

Thomas Wicksteed Steam Locomotive
Просмотров 9692 года назад
Many large waterworks had a railway on site to move the large quantities of coal required to feed the ever-hungry boilers. Usually the railways were connected to the commercial main line. At Kew Bridge, an underground railway was used to move coal from the company’s riverside wharf to the boiler houses. The coal carts were hauled using a waterwheel powered by waste water supplied by the pumping...
Bull Engine
Просмотров 8812 года назад
A Bull Engine differs from a traditional Cornish beam engine in that the steam cylinder is inverted over the pump and thus dispenses with the need for a main beam. This design meant that a Bull Engine took up about half the space of a beam engine of similar pumping capacity and makes the engine safer to operate. Ours is the largest known surviving Bull Engine, and the only one in its original e...
Boulton and Watt Engine
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
The Boulton & Watt is the oldest engine on site and ceased working in 1943 before being restored to working order in 1975. The sump of this engine has proved popular with wildlife with fish and crabs making their homes there. Originally there were two engines installed in this building, but the "East Cornish" engine was removed in the 1940s to allow artefacts from other pumping stations to be d...
James Kay "Dancers End" Engine
Просмотров 4573 года назад
The James Kay engine, also known as the Dancers End engine, takes its name from Lord Rothschild's estate at Dancer's End, near Tring, where it was used to pump water from a well. The engine was built in 1867 by James Kay of Bury, Lancashire. It was donated to the museum by the Thames Water Authority's Chiltern Division, where it had been kept on standby since the 1930s. It was found to be in go...
Easton & Amos Engine
Просмотров 3323 года назад
This engine was built by Easton & Amos of Southwark, in 1863 and came to Kew Bridge from the Cliftonville Pumping Station in Northampton as a “kit of parts”, where it had been in storage. It was popular for use in small, rural waterworks, where the huge capacity of a Cornish engine was not required. Rotative beam engines were also extensively used to drive mill and factory machinery.
Hathorn Davey Triple Expansion Engine
Просмотров 8353 года назад
Compared to the beam engines, this engine is of fairly modern design and represents the most common type of pumping engine built for waterworks after about 1900. This engine was built in Leeds in 1910 by Hathorn Davey & Co. and was previously in service in a pumping station at Newmarket. The engine was donated to the museum by the Anglian Water Authority.
Waddon Engine
Просмотров 4633 года назад
The Waddon Pumping Station at Croydon, Surrey, had the distinction of being the last waterworks in Britain to have a reciprocating steam engine in commercial operation. Its two pumping engines were finally shut down in 1983. The older engine (No.1) was presented to the museum by Thames Water and was dismantled and moved to Kew Bridge in 1984.

Good luck to everyone involved with this project, it will be hard work but well worth it. I remember the last time the 90" took steam, which was some time ago, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it run again.

This is probably the most important piece of industrial history at risk in England today.
