It's extremely interesting how the dopaminergic neurons *depress* approach signals in response to punishment, and avoidance signals to rewards. I've been thinking this way about brains in general for a while now - wondering if humans/animals are in fact just following hierarchical action chains that steer us clear of learned unpleasant experiences and toward rewarding experiences, in a sort of autonomous cyclic perpetuating loop. It's only when a new unpleasant or rewarding experience is encountered that this otherwise "situated" state of our brains changes. Gold!

A clarification - my talk is about studying brain processes and treatment of brain disorders such as schizophrenia or addiction with D2 dopamine receptor antisense RNA. HSV (herpes simplex virus) is mentioned as a potential tool (from several viruses) to deliver gene therapy (antisense RNA) in brain because it has propensity to infect neurons.
