How Much did Game of thrones Really Make??
No TV show has had as much cultural significance as Game of Thrones in the past decade. It spawned countless discussions across the years even after it ended and after its mediocre last season, these discussions went from adoringly high reviews of the show to utter disappointment and frustration with it. Yet very few of these discussions have tackled the reason Game of Thrones was even produced, WAS GAME OF THRONES EVEN PROFITABLE? How much did it make? How much did it Cost HBO to produce it? In this episode, I attempt to answer these questions which I think are just as important as why season 8 was so bad. Unlike in my other videos where I have financials and earnings calls to refer to, ...

Meal kit companies like Hello fresh, Blue Apron, Sunbasket, Marley Spoon, Factor, Home Chef, Every plate and Green chef were all the rage during the pandemic. They were so popular, business analysts heralded the end of traditional grocers like Whole foods, Aldi's, trader Joe's and kroger's. Why would customers go back to groceries when they could just subscribe to meal kits and get the same ing...

Ubisoft: the MYTH of Profitable Video Games

Ubisoft's decline is often blamed on greedy, out-of-touch executives who prioritize microtransactions in all their games instead of the gamer's experience. As a gamer, I also agree with some of the points raised against this obvious attempt to extract every penny b...

R u a computer or a human being pretending to be a computer
Ubislop does not make AAA games meanwhile random Chinese,South Korean,Japan stuidos make better and cheaper games while making profit. Go figure.
@@minakatahizuru assasins creed, ghost recon and far cry games are considered triple A. As for chinese, South Korean studios making profit I've not looked into them and I don't like assuming things, I'll look into it. I also don't like projecting other businesses onto others coz the dynamics are entirely different but in Japan one out of every 3 anime studios operate in the red, again not sure if this applies to game studios but they are adjacent businesses and if Japanese games are just marketing products similar to anime, i wouldn't be surprised if they also do not make profits.
Sony is a Japanese company, Crunchyroll is a Japanese streaming service, and anime is made in Japan. So, in the end, Japan wins. I hope Sony will focus solely on anime and sell Spiderman back to Marvel. It's pretty inappropriate to see a Japanese company owning Spiderman a popular America's fictional character. I know Sony will not let Spiderman go because he contributes a lot to their survival.
Sony won't be doing that anytime soon. Infact I suspect most Japanese companies are structured as conglomerates with diversified interests part of it is coz of the keiretsu networks I talked about. Anime is just another revenue stream for Sony
Much of anime has poor storytelling, poor character development and they beat the snot out of cliches. Some of them have a great idea or plot but can't develop or come up with a quality end. There are so many ideas and stories in world mythology. By the way, characters don't have to have the same skin color palette or culture.....
I think you are generalizing waaayyy to much. I've personally watched anime that I think have better story telling than any TV show. Attack on titan, legend of the galactic heroes, eight six, berserk come to mind. As for bad endings, I do agree. but what happens from the production side of the anime is once an anime becomes a hit, the Manga publishers sometimes force the mangaka to continue the story beyond the point he/she had intentionally decided to stop the story at. Though I wouldn't say this is unique to Anime/manga. even western TV shows like lost, and walking dead, prison break, supernatural etc try to milk their cash cows as much as possible. Creatively I hate it, but from a business perspective I understand why, it's better than funding an unknown project that might immediately flop and lose most of your capital. Lastly for tropes, i think most story telling generally follow the 7 story telling archetypes.
One thing you missed is most of the biggest Shows are going to Movies now. Demon Slayer and Spy and Others
Yeah i also wanted to mention this as another revenue stream but I thought it was currently to small to include it. However it's certainly growing. Every hit anime nowadays makes a movie and generates millions
Sony didn't buy Tyla out of her contract. That came from a false rumor that claimed that was a part of Sony Music Africa, which she is not a part of at all. She is in a Joint Venture deal between Epic records and Fax Records (independent label). Tyla is just partly under a division of Sony, she was never bought out from them directly. She was signed back in 2021. Interesting video though. It shows how much artists are just selling a brand. (Not to say that's bad or anything since they are selling their music at a price lol.) 😅
@@taticalypso-halls2261 thanks alot for the more detailed info. While researching the topic I saw she was signed under epic records which is owned by Sony Music so I made the connection. I would also love to know about the 2 million dollars involved in the deal. Was that real or a rumor?? What happened?
Oh hi🥰💜✨️ Not sure about the $2 million since there's no official information on how much the joint venture deal cost that I could find. I honestly think it was a mere exaggeration. I'm pretty sure it costs a pretty penny 😂. Yeah, I think people got confused with the Sony aspect of it though. Yeah, Sony purchased the music division of CBS Inc., which included Epic records. So basically Tyla is partly under a subsidiary of Sony and partly under FAX records an independent label. Your videos are very informative, it's astonishing how much that goes into creating a musical brand and selling it.✨️💫
Ah ubislop, the company i LOVE to hate!! Ive boycotted them for many many years, so long infact i cannot remember wen it began!
@@prezzeruk4054 haha, personally I'll never forgive them for letting Splinter Cell die off. It was my best from their catalogue of games, but seeing what they are doing to Assasins creed, it's good riddance. what's the last assassin's creed game you played?
@BusinessDymystified i played oddessy last, got quite into it, but the grind got to me dude. Everything is soooooo drawn out!!

Standard clauses in record label contracts are so insane I don’t understand how they are still in there because they are unconscionable and shouldn’t be enforced but yes even though they basically always have been, they are increasingly a massive parasite on music. They also have some very sneaky relationships with streaming and TikTok they keep on the down low like TikTok owns 20% of universal and 10% of Spotify they can make nice little mutually beneficial flows of income by promoting trash music they all have a financial interest in. This video was good though
The way I love thinking about those contracts is, every party is doing their damn best to absolutely screw the other, it's a matter of how much negotiating power you have. Bigger artists like Taylor swift and Drake basically dictate how their contracts will look like. The sad reality however is very few artists have that kind of negotiating power. Also, there are thousands of artists who would love for their music to be funded and promoted while there only a few record labels with the borrowed capital and cashflow to do so hence the power of UMG, Sony and Warner. As for Tik Tok, I wanted to get into their dispute and relationship but realized the video would be too long and go off tangent. Universal and Tik Tok each gave their own reasons for playing hard ball with each other. However, I think it came down to the revenue split between Tik Tok and Universal Music. Before their dispute, Tik tok licensed songs at a flat rate which is much lower than revenue based payments. Universal's argument was since tik tok widely uses its music to generate part of its revenue, it should be paid a percentage of it similar to its deal with spotify. Tik Tok argument on the other hand is it only uses Universal's music for synchronization purposes, it doesn't play full songs or even stream them so why should they pay part of their revenue when movies only pay synchronization fees for using a part of a popular song just like tik tok does?
@@BusinessDymystified that just reminded me of something I read way back at the start of the year/end of last year and on this I could be conflating but I came across all these patents some meta and other tech guys that were all kinda cool and new music features both on feeds and in their virtual space. Around the same time zuck was buying up decent % in record label shares that last time I checked I couldn’t find him owning anymore. Some features were things TikTok had referred to in their filings which made me just think is this a plan to fill the gap if the government work out a way to pretend the law says they can single out TikTok as a company to ban it (approaching a yes on that one lol). But this just reminded me how much information there is out there, that is accessible and prior to getting lazy or busy I’d started compiling it for analysis. I should do that again as it is super interesting that it would be great to dedicate some time to organise that and finish I think you can make reasonable conclusions for what they might be planning to do, including those artists selling their back catalog and allowing their likeness, labels surely 100% are going to make billions off you on a game or virtual meta concret space or whatever the youth call it lol and might want to extra consider that move. But also the way the IP law is detailed and the different type of rights, for these new techniques being used, it fundamentally doesn’t make sense, confused whether no one noticed or are they just trying to pretend that’s not a thing lol. My point is there is a lot of interesting legal and other issues in what they are doing and how they are doing it that are fairly solid and easily supported with documentation, it would be fun to go over, but as a person who can’t make videos it just makes me think, to what end tho lol. Like would anyone want this obsessive level of detail, even better would they pay for that information because I could do with a break from my job after this week lol. Personally I can’t think of anyone who might want that level of paper trail and legal analysis as artists are both not cashed up at that point or in the headspace to not know what they don’t know yet, considering diminishing returns if they just look for exploitation in a regular contract, that’s probably a better use of time on return. Videos are much better in that way to consume the information in yours I don’t think there is a place for that info, but tbh if I can’t think of a party who would be interested, and I free up I might do it anyway lol
A breath of fresh air. The business and economics of the gaming industry are extremely interesting to me, and that was a super interesting take on ubisoft. You get a sub from me.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. Also thank you for the sub.
Loved that opening pun
Haha you've made my day. When writing the script I was hoping a few people would get it lol
"Greedy" and "Works for cost" don't mesh. It's one or the other.
I was not making the argument they are greedy. Quite the opposite, my argument was there costs are extremely high
Nice video, but I recommend using your own voice, it makes it more personal for the viewers.
Thanks for the feedback
Don't let the low view count discourage you. Just keep producing videos if you love it. When you have a back catalogue, one day it will pop off.
I won't, i got into this knowing youtube is a grind at first, but it will pay off later. Thanks for the words of encouragement
