Eagle Scout’s Project Honors Veterans of Bishop, Texas
Eagle Scout Reagan Parr dedicated over a year to an extraordinary Eagle Scout project in his hometown of Bishop, Texas. Guided by the Scouting principle of giving back, Reagan created a weatherproof cemetery directory to honor the community’s history and its veterans. His directory meticulously documents every veteran and resident laid to rest in the cemetery, providing a detailed map for families to easily locate their loved ones. This heartfelt project stands as a lasting tribute to the community, combining service, research, and respect for local heritage. Reagan was unable to attend the dedication of the monument because he was away at college. Stay tuned as Scouting America 1910 will ...

You’re good! The only time to think you can’t make Eagle is if you make Life Rank with 5 months to go before your 18th BD! THEN you’ve run out of time because you have to serve at least 6 months in a Leadership position. Plus, all Eagle required MB & 7 elective MB + Eagle project, + Eagle Scout workbook. Keep going!!!! Make sure you’re having fun! Ask for help. Make sure your Scoutmaster knows you’re still interested and ready to push forward. Even older Scouts will lend a hand to help you out. Just ask.

My son earned his Eagle at 15. This meant he was old enough to be followed by youth and adults, but it was not too late (17 or so) when he had to choose between school and scouts. We also said the scouts should get their wings before their wheels. Once they get their wheels, the wings will fly away. My son got his driver's license on his 18th birthday. Finally, just keep a list of the steps on the kitchen frig and ask "How bad do you want it?" Our troop has about 45 Eagles over the last 25 years.

When my son got his first badge years ago, we got an extra-long sash for him. I hemmed the top to take up about 2 inches of slack, then I sewed on a spare epaulet to it for this exact purpose. So far, it's been great. The only thing was that the kid has now grown to a point where we might need to get the longest sash because he's going to take after his great uncles and be taller than his dad and I.

What an inspirational and entertaining production! By the way, I've seen Col. Fossum before and heard the story relating to the knot used there in space. Evidently, this energetic and inspiring Distinguished Eagle Scout tells the story the same way each time, BUT, there IS a difference between the constrictor knot and the clove, hitch! I recall having the same surprised reaction the first time I heard the story (I think during a national outdoor conference at Philmont). The constrictor knot is initially formed like the clove hitch, beginning with a half hitch, but instead of finishing with an additional and identical half hitch, the constrictor knot subsequently finishes with an overhand knot. (View video: ruclips.net/video/CSNbDClevPs/видео.htmlsi=QEj1yeeZMKhI8qHr). This makes it a very effective binding knot with considerably more holding power. Congratulations to the very impressive Eagle recipient, and God bless Scouting America!

Thank you for your comment and watching. Although Scouting is about building leadership & good citizenship, there isn’t a male or female that should be denied this opportunity. I do like the fact that they still separate the Troops into boy & girl troops, but are starting to experiment with coed troops. I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. Boys act totally different with boys. Same with girls hanging with girls. But this is forward thinking (coed troops) & Scouting is trying to stay up with the times. I personally don’t think at the Troop level this is a good idea… maybe give them each Two years in the troop first to get the Scouting fundamentals out of the way… then maybe after First Class rank they mix the Troop make-up. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

Carry your Scoutbook to every meeting & campout (get a cover for it) and take care of the book. If you bridged over from Cub Scouts you should already know a lot of the requirements in the Scout Rank. Up to First Class Rank you can work on any requirements listed in any of these ranks. I would immediately start the 30 day physical fitness in Tebderfoot. After that do the next 30 day physical requirement from. Second Class. You can NOT combine them! Good luck enjoy your Scouting journey and READ the book, a TON of good life skill information! Again welcome to Scouting & don’t forget to have FUN! 👍🏻 Thanks for asking the question!

This is why it’s important to take Merit Badges at summer/winter camp that are Eagle required… BUT to prevent partials the Scout should take the initiative to find out which requirements WON’T be covered during camp. Yes… there are 3 Eagle required merit badges take a minimum of 90 days. Also, finding Merit Badge Universities will help… but a lot of Scouts do take the full 7-8 years to complete. There is nothing wrong with that. The goal for the Scouts are to earn Eagle, but as far as the adults we should do our best to help them become good citizens & hopefully learn some life skills along the way. Thanks again for your comment.

My wife and I joined Scouting as leaders in 1985 when our son joined a new program called Tiger Cubs. She went on to work at our local council office, while I retired in 2020. I served in all levels of adult leadership with Pack, Troop, Team, Crew, and as a district and council adult leader/trainer. I saw a large number of scouts who had completed the Eagle requirements by age 13. The largest numbers were members of a church no longer associated in scouting. During my time, I also served for about 15 years in adult district and council roles. Including Eagle Scout boards of reviews. As a Scoutmaster, I endorsed, referred or reviewed many young men for their boards. I also, by a scout's completion of all requirements, referred, but did not favorably or negatively endorse a few scouts. It always made for interesting boards of review. Board members from my own troop would always question my curious position. As THE troop Scoutmaster, I was required to acknowledge and verify all of the scout's completed requirements, however if I felt the scout needed more time in an actual leadership role, not simply one on paper. OR I felt that their maturity level wasn't ready, I declined to comment further. Seasoned board members came to understand me, and my position, while parents from my troop may not have. Curiously in one family that happened twice with two brothers. One thought I was being unfair and hard on him, and he transferred to another unit, where he received his Eagle. His brother chose to remain, and after he showed he was an Eagle, not only on paper, but in spirit, leadership and maturity, he joined almost 200 fellow scouts on our Eagle's Nest board. A testament of scouts from 1927, until my retirement in 2018. Several more of my scouts achieved their Eagle after I turned over leadership of the troop. Sadly, the troop was allowed to fold just short of its 95th year of continuous charter to its Charter Partner. Alumni of the troop and the Nest included many successful leaders of our community. And heroes who served in our military in every war and conflict from the past into recent times. I was a dinosaur Scoutmaster, whose time had come. While there have been many changes to the program over the years, including the massive restructuring that occurred after I retired, I will say that I believed as a Scouter then, and to this day, that having a co-ed program was way overdue. I am happy to see that scouting is available to all who wish to join, and achieve its highest rank, hopefully becoming the leader's our republic need today and in our future.

I am a Tenderfoot about to start 8th Grade and I was just wondering if that makes it almost impossible to earn the Rank of Eagle Scout since you mentioned that it is recommended to earn First Class before 8th Grade.

Yes… you can do it! Work backwards from your 18th birthday. The video is a recommendation. Concentrate on getting to First Class by May of 2025 or sooner. Get a copy of the pdf that is in the description of this video. A lot of requirements you can double up on! Meaning you don’t have to do them twice for different Ranks. BUT, you need to carry your Scout Book with you everywhere! Make sure you know who can sign off on your book. (Usually more than 1 person)A lot of requirements are “discussion” you’re just talking through the requirement with someone who can sign off on your book. Read the requirement -then there is a page number that has the answers in the book. Read over that & be ready to answer the requirement with the signer of your Scout Book. Most Scouts forget their book at meetings & campouts, requirements are done & they forget to get the requirements signed off… getting behind. After you make it to First Class… it’s 6 months for Star, then 6 months for Life(with an Eagle Project). It just gets tough once you’re in High School, because other activities get in the way, sports, drama, Orchestra, Band … Good Luck! You can still make it!

That’s fantastic, glad we could help! Keep working on all the requirements… you don’t just have to do one rank at a time! Check out my video from “Scout to Eagle.” It has a lot of good tips, including a pdf file to download, that shows you requirements that you have done & can be shared with other ranks & marked off at the same time! Have fun along your trail to Eagle!

Thanks for commenting and watching. Cooper didn’t expect anything, it became a personal challenge since he was so close. Although, we believe there should be something since they offer Palms for extra Merit Badges over the initial 21 required. Bronze (5 extra MB’s), Gold (10 extra MB’s) & Silver (15 extra MB’s). Like his friend said-maybe offer a Diamond Palm!😉

Keep setting goals & remember you can do any rank requirement at anytime, take your book to every meeting, because you will do some rank requirements at those meetings and make sure you get that requirement signed off at that meeting. Also a lot of requirements are discussion questions. Not necessarily showing a skill. You can get those signed off too if you read the page numbers that are notes after the requirement! Keep going - you got this!

You want to REACH EAGLE SCOUT, not "want to be Eagle". By the time you reach the level of Eagle Scout, you have mastered leading groups of 10 (patrol leader), then multiple patrols (senior patrol leader), and periodically the entire troop (Junior Assistant Scout Master (JASM)). Many work organizations enjoy those leadership skills.
