Snakeful Grace

Hey, my name Jordin Machado (previously Grace), aspiring biologist and hopefully a future herptologist! I absolutely love sharing the things I learn about snakes, reptiles, and whatever else I come across. I am currently the owner of a small growing reptile business called Urban Dinos focused on making sure people can get healthy animals and know how to properly take care of them. In the future, I want to breed many different species and hold educational programs with some of the animals I have to help people realize these creatures can be stunning.
What Should Your Hognose Weigh?
I've been meaning to talk about this for a while, since I see a lot of posts online of people asking if their hognoses are the right weight for their age, if they are underweight, were underfed, etc.
Generally, age does not determine their size: It's eating consistency and how many meals they have had. A healthy hognose can go a while without eating, but they won't really grow in that period of time. Some babies take significantly longer than others to really become established eaters and it's GOOD if a breeder waits for them to be established eaters before selling them, rather than lying about their age and just saying the snake is younger than it actually is.
Ideally, you want to breed ...

Introduction to the Sunburst Morph, Western Hognose
Hey just a question, how much would you price a toxic superconda morph baby at? Male and female prices
“I’ve lived a bad life sister.”, what a cutie!
Are corn snakes great for an 11yr olds first snake? I have ball Python's but my son wants something less intimidating lol
Most normals I’ve seen post in groups isn’t in my opinion as cute as the one you are holding. I have a male normal he looks much like the one you are holding. When you bring that one outside does it look pinkish hue to it? Mine does, but mine also does have the darker side spots and lighter back spots, as well like a white edging around the spots. But his belly is the same as the one you are holding.
Big mouf
I've never popped any of my snakes. I'm so worried that I might hurt them unintentionally, so I've always taken them to my vet to get probed during their first check ups. I wouldn't be adverse to learning how to pop, but I don't have anyone I know nearby that could teach me.
Hognoses are always funny to watch the way they eat their food.. eating is a challenge to them
You would think that eating is meant to be an essential skill to survive 😅😂
Haha! Hilarious!
I love that you fed that! That’s what I would feed. What do you think of them?
I absolutely love them! All of my hognoses that are willing to eat reptilinks (the majority, though I have a few that aren't interested) have really great muscle tone, sheds, and overall better growth too.

Hahaha she's definitely full of personality!
Hi! Right now im using those bricks that are made of coconut fiber for bedding if i use that alone is that considered bioactive? can i replace the top soil you suggested for the coconut fiber and then add the sphagnum moss, reptibark, and play sand ? This question drives me crazy but do i need to bake any of this substrate before using it ? Lastly do i need isopods with this mixture when using coconut fiber or woudl i need them if i use topsoil instead of cocounut fiber ? Sorry fo the long list of questions but they will really help me a lot ! than you for your support and guidance ! <3
Heya! It's mainly considered "bioactive" once it has some other form of "life" in there, such as plants or isopods. You could probably use the coconut fiber instead of top soil, but be very cautious of how often you wet the substrate since coconut fiber will retain a lot more humidity and doesn't have drainage like top soil does. You wouldn't want to bake it, since that would be killing any benefits from the microbacteria (but that's why it's important to make sure you buy from a trusted source). If you are collecting anything from the wild, then I would recommend baking it. Isopods are a very important part of the bioactive setup! We like to use powder blues/oranges and dwarf isopods :)
@@SnakefulGrace thanks so much for your reply ! hope to meet you at an expo one day ! im going to the repticon in costa mesa CA.
I've just gotten my first snake. She is an amazing hognose. This video is great in explaining the basics of their morphs and the overall process. Thank you!
So happy the video helped !
It’s absolutely adorable 😍
Happy you enjoyed it!
I’d love to play with a bunch of hognoses!🥲
It's always a great day when it's snakeful :)
Will a baby be able to escape from the hole ive made in the tub? I melted the holes with a stainless steel straw.
It depends on the size of the hole and the size of the baby. I wouldn't trust a garter snake baby with most ventilation holes, for example.
You guys are the best you guys say the right things and say things to help us thank you so much
Thank you so much for your sweet words. We are always learning and just trying to share the love 🥰
Great, informative video for new hognose owners! Watched it before I got my girl. #KeepItSnakeful
So happy this video helped with your first hoggie!
What a sassy nope rope
Will your hognose eventually get less aggressive? My kids really want to hold him, but I am concerned they will drop him. We bought him from Animalcon and he was super sweet there, but ever since he got shipped to us, he has been very very aggressive. I got him out today, (after watching this video thank you) which was 9 days since we bought him and 2 1/2 days since we fed him. Is he like other snakes that he will start calming down the more times you handle him? Thanks for the help!
Hey! That's a totally valid concern. I still get a bit jumpy when I first go to grab a hissy hognose. They definitely aren't trying to be aggressive, they are just being defensive (they don't always know what's going on and try to look tough). Sometimes, they do remain vocal, even as adults, but a lot of them do learn to calm down and relax once you start handling. They might still be getting used to their new home, which can also lead to hissiness. As long as they continue to eat, you're doing great. It's more of a temper tantrum than them being aggressive, as they won't bite when being defensive. :) Does that help?
I LOVE 😍🥰 him!! Dreams and goals girl! You have beautiful noodles. I saw the one you gifted to Snake Discovery. So sweet❤
Awww, thank you! I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to give Emily something she had wanted.
Instead of a chimera could it be mosiac instead?
I'm not sure. The main reason we think chimera is that the colors showing are from his carried gene. We shall hopefully learn more when we start breeding him :)
Does it have to be in a bin? we have a 20 gal front opening tank- but I also mistakenly went out and bought a 40 gal breeder while reading briefly about their needs, and figured bigger was better but not seeing it was for adult females and their minimum😂🥺 could this still work? The 20?
It depends on the hognose. The majority of babies are shy and often have an easier time feeling snug and safe in small bins, but there are some that are confident enough and do great in their larger setups immediately. Bigger is amazing--as long as they keep eating and feel comfortable in that setup.
Wash your annoying hair
Lavenders definitely have shorter stumpier tails! My male also has a shorter tail, but the shape and scale count does suggest male. Scale count with tail shape is the best way visually, without popping or probing.
Funny you mention that, as I do think I've seen clutches with short tails a lot more often in lavender than other morphs 🤔
Lidar in the phone pissing him.
Wow didn't know that
Is that a rattlesnake or is that a non venomous snake that you’re holding?
It's just a harmless bullsnake that likes to talk back to me :)
Eww
Looks like you got some musk on your hands there.
They never tell you that raising babies and working with snakes means you spend a lot of time getting pooped on 😓😅😂
Grace did he give you a surprise poop defense mechanism all over your hands? But it kinda looked like blisters of some kind. Not sure is why I'm asking
Yes, he musked all over my hands to express his displeasure. 😅

You are beyond adorable, Debbie! ❤️
Oh so dedded
The most dedded
If I get mine, I’m probably gonna get a 10 gallon for it.
A 10 gallon is great for some babies, but a lot can be overwhelmed with the space. I actually started with a 10 gallon with my first hognose ever and despite having clutter, hides, and everything, it didn't want to eat, but as soon as I downgraded, he started eating immediately. You can always upgrade later on, or just be prepared to possibly need to downgrade if it doesn't work out :)
Bulls are soo judgemental😂
They definitely are 😂
Bull snakes all have such an attitude it’s so funny
I absolutely love them
So roudy...LOL

Aww you’re literally me praising my snakes for hissing at me lol😂
I love it when she talks back to me!
I was at the expo right next to you guys
Hope you had fun! ☺️
@@SnakefulGraceI did!! I hope you had fun too!
@@SnakefulGrace I was ballhalla
Is it because it is a glass dish?
No, it's just because it's a hognose. When they like to dig, they will do this against *everything* including your T-Shrit, your skin, the floor, the corners of their enclosure, etc. 😅
So adorable! What morph is that little hoggie? I want one so badly, I like all the expensive ones and I want to feed reptalinks. I do not think I could do mice 😢
We have a few babies that do eat Reptilinks when we have offered them. This girl does fall into the expensive ones 😅 She is a stormcloud, which is sable and axanthic.
@@SnakefulGrace oh wow. I love the snow but really want a super arctic. I am sure they are crazy expensive. If I ever get one it will probably just be a normal.
@@bobertforher It definitely depends on the breeder and their genetics. Though, a super arctic or a snow, even at the most expensive, will be at least a fifth of the price compared to a StormCloud.
You said you sell these baby bins, do you sell them online by chance?
We do not, but we do have a video on our channel that actually shows how to make them yourself too! :)
@@SnakefulGrace I’m having a hard time finding every item I need, is that something you have put together in a list with links somewhere? Sorry I feel like I wanna be over prepared lol
Love your comparison to being chewed on by a toddler. But seriously, I think they are venomous to people who don’t know your method for removing them within a minute or two. Otherwise, some people react and others don’t is an indicator of an allergy!
Funny enough, I have heard of someone that let their hognose chew on them for a solid 15 minutes without any serious reaction other than minor itching and many others, but it is always best to be on the safe side and just avoid letting them chew altogether 😅
She said only way out is to drown myself lol
Looking to get a baby hognose soon and doing LOTs of research, this is a GREAT video! Thanks so much! I was wondering, once they start confidently feeding, how often do you feed your younger "baby" snakes, vs juveniles, vs adults? (sorry if i missed it in the video!)
Generally, baby males under 1 year I like to feed every 4-5 days and females under 2 years old as well. Once they pass that age, I do switch over to every 7 days :)
@@SnakefulGrace Thanks so much for the response! One more question if I you had some time... you mention waiting one week after getting the new baby before you feed, and then another 48 hours before you pick him/her up. During that first week, is it OK to occasionally look at the baby by removing it's hide, etc to see how it's doing? Or is that still too much stress, and they need to be completely left alone, unless changing water bowl? Thanks again!!
Snake Princess: "..I'll never be an artist now! ..." Me: LOL, I understand
Who is this DIVA?! 😂❤
Her name is Chilli! She had never played dead before, but of course, she had to as we were getting her CLEAN to go to her new owners 😅
What a drama queen!!!😂😂😂😂😂
