What Should Your Hognose Weigh?
I've been meaning to talk about this for a while, since I see a lot of posts online of people asking if their hognoses are the right weight for their age, if they are underweight, were underfed, etc.
Generally, age does not determine their size: It's eating consistency and how many meals they have had. A healthy hognose can go a while without eating, but they won't really grow in that period of time. Some babies take significantly longer than others to really become established eaters and it's GOOD if a breeder waits for them to be established eaters before selling them, rather than lying about their age and just saying the snake is younger than it actually is.
Ideally, you want to breed ...

    Most normals I’ve seen post in groups isn’t in my opinion as cute as the one you are holding. I have a male normal he looks much like the one you are holding. When you bring that one outside does it look pinkish hue to it? Mine does, but mine also does have the darker side spots and lighter back spots, as well like a white edging around the spots. But his belly is the same as the one you are holding.

    I've never popped any of my snakes. I'm so worried that I might hurt them unintentionally, so I've always taken them to my vet to get probed during their first check ups. I wouldn't be adverse to learning how to pop, but I don't have anyone I know nearby that could teach me.

    Hi! Right now im using those bricks that are made of coconut fiber for bedding if i use that alone is that considered bioactive? can i replace the top soil you suggested for the coconut fiber and then add the sphagnum moss, reptibark, and play sand ? This question drives me crazy but do i need to bake any of this substrate before using it ? Lastly do i need isopods with this mixture when using coconut fiber or woudl i need them if i use topsoil instead of cocounut fiber ? Sorry fo the long list of questions but they will really help me a lot ! than you for your support and guidance ! <3

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace 12 дней назад

      Heya! It's mainly considered "bioactive" once it has some other form of "life" in there, such as plants or isopods. You could probably use the coconut fiber instead of top soil, but be very cautious of how often you wet the substrate since coconut fiber will retain a lot more humidity and doesn't have drainage like top soil does. You wouldn't want to bake it, since that would be killing any benefits from the microbacteria (but that's why it's important to make sure you buy from a trusted source). If you are collecting anything from the wild, then I would recommend baking it. Isopods are a very important part of the bioactive setup! We like to use powder blues/oranges and dwarf isopods :)

    Will your hognose eventually get less aggressive? My kids really want to hold him, but I am concerned they will drop him. We bought him from Animalcon and he was super sweet there, but ever since he got shipped to us, he has been very very aggressive. I got him out today, (after watching this video thank you) which was 9 days since we bought him and 2 1/2 days since we fed him. Is he like other snakes that he will start calming down the more times you handle him? Thanks for the help!

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace 16 дней назад

      Hey! That's a totally valid concern. I still get a bit jumpy when I first go to grab a hissy hognose. They definitely aren't trying to be aggressive, they are just being defensive (they don't always know what's going on and try to look tough). Sometimes, they do remain vocal, even as adults, but a lot of them do learn to calm down and relax once you start handling. They might still be getting used to their new home, which can also lead to hissiness. As long as they continue to eat, you're doing great. It's more of a temper tantrum than them being aggressive, as they won't bite when being defensive. :) Does that help?

    • @SnakefulGrace

  • @destinywaider113
    @destinywaider113 19 дней назад

    Does it have to be in a bin? we have a 20 gal front opening tank- but I also mistakenly went out and bought a 40 gal breeder while reading briefly about their needs, and figured bigger was better but not seeing it was for adult females and their minimum😂🥺 could this still work? The 20?

    • @SnakefulGrace
      @SnakefulGrace 16 дней назад

      It depends on the hognose. The majority of babies are shy and often have an easier time feeling snug and safe in small bins, but there are some that are confident enough and do great in their larger setups immediately. Bigger is amazing--as long as they keep eating and feel comfortable in that setup.

      A 10 gallon is great for some babies, but a lot can be overwhelmed with the space. I actually started with a 10 gallon with my first hognose ever and despite having clutter, hides, and everything, it didn't want to eat, but as soon as I downgraded, he started eating immediately. One more question if I you had some time... you mention waiting one week after getting the new baby before you feed, and then another 48 hours before you pick him/her up. During that first week, is it OK to occasionally look at the baby by removing it's hide, etc to see how it's doing? Or is that still too much stress, and they need to be completely left alone, unless changing water bowl? Thanks again!!
