Tying and Fishing the Ghost Mysis
Mysis Shrimp are a food staple at in many lakes and tailwaters in Colorado. These fresh water shrimp are present year-round and provide a high-protein snack for trout. I created this simple pattern after seeing the UV dubbing in a fly shop and getting the idea for a "glowing" shrimp pattern. I fish this fly in sizes 16-20, choosing sizes 18 or 20 most often.
Mysis shrimp live in the lower water column around weed beds, similar to scuds. Because of this, you need to fish this fly deep without snagging bottom. I found that a drop shot rig is best for this task, as it gets the fly down quickly and can keep it at the right depth (4-8" off the bottom).

Spring Fly Fishing in Colorado 2022

Walking the river in search of wild browns. Blue-wing olive mayflies are making their way up the river system, and the fish have really gotten active in the last few days. The ticket today was still an indicator rig with a bead-head hares ear and an RS-2 dropped about 12 inches behind it. Paddleboard Fly Fishing: Nymphing for BIG reservoir trout
Просмотров 1793 года назад
Fly fishing from a paddleboard is a great way to reach fish that are just off shore. The trout in this Central Colorado reservoir grow big and run hard, and today they were keyed in on Hare's Ear nymphs accompanying the Callibaetis hatch. Tying and Fishing the Elk Hair Caddis

Caddis flies are found on freestones, creeks and tailwaters throughout the United States. On the Arkansas River in Central Colorado, we see our first caddis hatches in April, beginning in the Big Horn Sheep Canyon near Salida, and working their way north over the following weeks. Their presence is distinct, and this classic dry fly pattern will tempt any actively feeding trout. Material List: -...

Blue-winged Olive (BWO) mayflies are trout-food staples on freestones and tailwaters alike. We have recently seen great hatches of them on the Arkansas River in central Colorado, and they will remain throughout the summer and fall. Tying and rigging the Dorsey Yarn Indicator
Просмотров 39 тыс.3 года назад
This yard indicator system was created Pat Dorsey out of Colorado. It's similar to a New Zealand indicator system, but I think it's even more simple and easy to use. It lands soft and is extra sensitive for those subtle takes, making it perfect for tailwaters and shallow-water nymphing. It can be tied in a variety of sizes to suspend heavier flies if required. Brush it out, add some floatant an...
Tying and fishing the Santa Baby

The Santa Baby is a mayfly attractor pattern that I created for the winter months. It's inspired by the Frenchie and Pheasant Tail beadheaded-nymphs. I heard Rim likes to use very thin diameter fly lines when fishing this fly and all flies for that matter- something akin to today’s euro lines. Do you use a standard tapered line or are you also using a thin diameter line? I’m going to tie and try the rs2 during a pmd hatch tomorrow where the fish are extremely selective due to pressure and abundance of food. Recently these fish have been ignoring duns for the most part and are more often flashing about a foot below the surface. I’ve tried droppers on short segments of tippet such as soft hackles and nymphs both weighted and unweighted and have not yet cracked the code. Any suggestions on rigging/tactics?

    Much easier to use small bit of rubber tube and loop the line as in the New Zealand wool indicator technique , takes seconds , at my age times running out, all the best, David.

    • @billquantrill4960
      @billquantrill4960 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah the NZ system is stream side friendly for sure. If you have to adjust depth back and forth as you work upstream, it can play hell with your tippet. This rig shown here would be about the same in that regard I'm guessing.

  • @wyomingtrout5581
    @wyomingtrout5581 2 года назад

    I love this system but I have found that moving it up & down the thicker part of the leader will cause coiling which is almost impossible to straighten, have you experienced similar issues? Also, I would add a drop of super glue on the thread wraps. This makes it bomb proof and the super glue coating is weightless when dry.

  • @jds4935

  • @weisswurstfruhstuck8523

    What material should the yarn be made of? The downside I see here is you see a 90 degree angle in the line which would be very annoying while casting or do I have a mistake thinking here? 🤔

  • @38gad
    @38gad 2 года назад

    I seem to be doing something wrong. I’m using a 1/4 inch orthodontic band, but after routing a leader loop through the band four times and attaching the indicator, it is very difficult to slide the indicator. Do you have any experience with that issue/suggestions how to correct?

    • @freestonegear4551
      @freestonegear4551 2 года назад

      First, you can try wetting the leader with some saliva to help it slide easier. If that doesn't help, chances are that the loop has a bunch of twists in it. Take the indicator out of the loop and unwind the loop, then reattach indicator and try sliding it.

      A lot of the beach is featureless from the ground view, so you're best off driving along and looking for birds working schools of fish, or finding rips/cuts that will channel fish as well.

    I just double the leader back over the Orvis nail knot tool and wrap the rubber band around the end of the tool five or six times. I then pull the loop and band off the end of the tool and put a couple of pieces of thick yarn through the loop and tighten the loop. It can be done in about thirty seconds while standing in a stream.

    • @freestonegear4551

      Nope. The friction from the rubber band holds the yarn (essentially weightless) firmly in place. If you leave the indicator system on your leader all day, it will put a slight bend in the line, but it can easily be straightened out by pulling with your hands.
