Thank you, thank you, thank you for this review. I've seen so many positive reviews with persons downplaying what I consider to be major issues. What you described is the very same rudeness many tourists, visitors, expats in France experience. I have a friend teaching English who met pretty much similar treatment from a landlord, plus there are tons of videos of English speakers (including non-Americans) who met similar. I saw one video saying the French respect you more if you match them with that combative, rude energy. My only problem is that you didn't tell us who it is. I'm planning to do a Worldpackers experience, and I will certainly be avoiding any farms in remote France.

Excellent experiment, thank you. This is actually the traditional way Latin was learned for hundreds of years. After you got a decent grasp of the language, you basically get a basic (but not too easy) native text like Caesar's Gallic Wars or Horace's poems, write out a line from the original Latin, and then translate it to English. Then wait a bit and then translate your English line back into Latin and see how you did. If you did well, then move on to the next line. People in the comprehensible approach world always rag on this method but it produced hundreds of years of the best Latinists (from roughly 15th to 18th centuries) we've had since the days of the Roman Empire, and it's interesting to see this being applied to a living language.

I felt in flight or fight mode but couldn’t do anything bc I was in a country side of town and was scared . I had to leave early and he forced me to leave him a good review.

I learned spanish mostly from dreaming spanish. Currently at just under 600 hours of comprehenible input. But i cant tell you how valuable the first 3 levels (90 lessons) of pimsluer were for me. It helped me feel more at home while watching dreaming spanish vodeos and got me familiar with gramatical structures. I speed ran the program so i only paid for 2 months. Thought it was a good value. Im not a language learning expert and have tried no other language learning programs other than pimsluer and dreaming spanish. But no, pimsluer absolutely will not make you converstional

Hi, wanted to check if Worldpackers took down that account or if it’s still up? The EXACT same situation happened to me in France and the host also had a misleading number of good reviews but was actually super toxic. I think it’s because most volunteers are fearful of getting a bad review as well. Also, if I don’t leave a review, can she still leave a scathing review on mine?

I’m shocked.. because I went for a Worldpackers in France countryside as well. Just got kicked out 1 hour ago.. looking to youtube for help and support from people who have been through the same. My host is EXACTLY like what you described. passive aggressive, petty, complaining about other volunteers all the time, very negative person, says she’s direct and straightforward about tasks but then threw a big fuss about how I didn’t offer help outside of my set working hours. Insisted to eat meals together for both lunch and dinner. (She cooked, so no complains). But lunch was just a 1-2hour tirade of complains and negativity. Dinner is a long work meeting because she keeps going over every tiny detail and repeats herself when a lot of the things she wanted to say could have been done in a few words. Never been so mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically drained in my life. Saw the comments. Will NEVER do a Worldpackers in France again. Messed up for real. Kicked me out and I had to find a ride to the nearest big town which is unfortunately 1 hour car ride away. Decided I was willing to settle for the nearest train station (which is 30min away). But a lot of people still rejected me. Finally found a guy who was willing to drive me there. A good guy. Was the mayor of the town I was in. Drove me all the way there. Had to google translate the whole time. Tried to pay him as well but he refused. Really such a gem after all the trauma 😭😭😭😭 Now I’m in my airbnb. In shock. Trying to recover. Just glad I’m out :”) Okay I will continue watching your video now..

I don't care so much about effectiveness. Of course, I want my efforts to bear fruits eventually, but I also want to enjoy my way to success. This is my hobby, after all, and I have no deadline. So even if any other method would prove to be more effective, I still would stick to this one for the simple reason that this is what I enjoy doing. I find classroom studying boring and reading a native language novel interesting. An effective method is no longer effective when it is abandoned, and that is what most people do with for formal classroom study. So even if classroom study would be proved to be more effective, I'd still stick to input.

If you think about it isn't speaking to people on a language exchange app not also a form of comprehensible input? You are talking to a person who speaks the language you want to learn on a much more advance level and there are certainly things you might not understand but the person you are talking to (if they are helpful) will try to help you understand what they are saying while correcting what you are saying. So in a way their help is turning what they are saying into comprehensible input.
