    Any blind drivers ?.....how about the lateral motion?...how much is there

    • @a5wr1ght
      @a5wr1ght 2 года назад

      #3 wheelset is blind. Tire width is a bit too narrow. Overall it should have more lateral movement.

    • @hoppercar
      @hoppercar Год назад

      How do do you make a blind driver wider, than what the casting already is ?....a completely flat wheel, with no flange ??

    • @a5wr1ght
      @a5wr1ght Год назад

      @@hoppercar you make a tire that has a wider tread than a standard width tire. For full-size, standard tire width is usually 5.5" (including the flange). Blind tires may be 6.25" or possibly more.

    • @hoppercar
      @hoppercar Год назад

      Seems to me that extra width tire would either rub the frames on the backside, or interfere with the connecting rods on the front side ?

    • @a5wr1ght
      @a5wr1ght Год назад

      @@hoppercar that just depends on the total amount of clearance, how much lateral is desired, and if that was planned for in any way in advance.

    I think the original 765 was wrecked we rebuilt that engine renamed 765 in ft Wayne Indiana in the 80s I welded on the boiler tube and fire box

    • @a5wr1ght
      @a5wr1ght 2 года назад

      The 765 has always been what it is. When Fort Wayne asked for a locomotive for display, they specifically asked for the 767 because it was the first for some special event ages ago. Because of the exceptionally poor (or possibly scrapped) condition of the actual 767, the NKP pulled a fast one on the city of Fort Wayne and renumbered the 765 after retirement to 767. When the "767" was pulled from its display to be rebuilt, it was eventually discovered that the NKP did this "switch-a-roo" and 765 was restored to its original number.

    I was there once in 1990 and again in 1999 and spent the day wandering the grounds. There wasn't a lot going on. The sense was not that of a place of preservation but more of embalming and decay. I remember broken windows, pealing paint and horrifying leans on buildings. Nothing looked like it was pushing forward, more like it was coming to an end. I recall an employee stating that because of all the leans and such, that the line shaft could never be used again. Brad says it well when he speaks of doing work that is unspoken and unnoticed is a trade mark of The Friends. I could hardly believe my eyes when the shop engine was running and being used to do real work.. Nicely done
