This is a video to help English speakers pronounce the words to the traditional Swiss song "Ranz des Vaches" (also called "Lyoba). This pronunciation guide is for the Fribourg Patois version of this song as sung by Bernard Romanens, not the French or the German versions.

This the a horn model we call the "Bull Moose". It is nearly 25 feet long, and plays in the key of F a full octave lower than a standard alphorn. It is made from redwood with birch, walnut and hickory accents.

underrated song
Wow! Great trio arrangement!
Aawww, I missed roof rehearsal 😭I was up in Virginia City. Sorry!
Absolutely gorgeous, full sound!! Your talent is amazing!!
Gorgeous!!!
Sounds herrlich!
Danke!
What's expensive when $1,000 is considered inexpensive?
The average cost for a wooden Swiss alphorn is between $3500-$4500. So "cheap" is $900-$1800, while "expensive" is $6000-$9000. Alphorns are actually very inexpensive as far as musical instruments go--for example, a "cheap" bassoon would be $3000-$4000, while an "expensive" bassoon would be $30,000-$40,000!
@@sierrahorns Thanks for the information! I appreciate it. 😁
The new horns sound great! I hope the Davis Creek Regional Park makes a quick recovery from the recent fire.
We hope so too! Our group may be moving our practice location from there to Bowers Mansion until Davis Creek can recover, but Davis Creek Park was nearly perfect for us.
Thank you very much! Let me know if you would like the sheet music in a different key--this version is written for mixed French horns (cor d'harmonie), cor des Alpes (alphorn) and vocal choir, and in the sheet music shown in the video all of the parts are in F, so they sound a 5th below written. We need to keep traditions alive, good luck!

Sounds like some pretty good reverb there!
The acoustics are nice there! It's a long 1 mile up with good views, and then thankfully just 1 mile back down to the trailhead
Nice Original, Lindsey!
One of our favorites to play with good echoes!
The birds like it!
I like those alphorn holders to keep the mouthpiece end supported when not playing. I need one of those!
They certainly are handy! If you're a woodworker they are relatively simple to make, or you can order one from us. Let me know if you have any questions about them!
Is this one "Ranz des Vaches de Ormonds?"

Excellent pronunciation guide, Lindsey. I appreciate the mini history/geography/language lesson, too. Thanks for posting!
Thanks, Gary! Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Sounds like the whole village showed up to participate in this version. Well done!
Thank you, Gary!
Wow, you guys sound like a whole chorus of Swiss players! I'm just learning how to follow sheet music, and appreciate your moving orange cursor. Thanks for putting this together and posting it.

Didn't realize that the official name of this piece is "Bugler's Dream." I'm older than you guys, so also remember it as the theme song for the old ABC Wide World of Sports TV show in the 1960s.
Yes, this song is originally "Bugler's Dream" but once it was used for the Olympics in the 1960s it became known as "The Olympic Fanfare" or "Olympic Theme". The version that John Williams wrote is a different song, and it was blended with "Bugler's Dream" for a later Olympic ceremony (I can't remember the exact date for that one).

My friend recently passed and some people came to Dayton to play at her funeral. Do you have concerts that you perform throughout the year?
Hello! We meet every Sunday (weather permitting) at Davis Creek Park in Washoe Valley for an open group rehearsal. Our winter rehearsal time is 2:30pm-4:00pm, and they are free and open to the public. We also have a smattering of performances throughout the year as people ask us to play for events. You can keep an eye on our schedule on our website: sierrahorns.org/index.html
This absolutely makes me smile!!!
Trompe de chasse : pronounced "tromp duh shass". "Tromp deh shass" sounds too much like "trompe d'échasses", presumably a horn intended for playing when you're walking around on stilts.
We're working on our pronunciations - we speak a little German but no French, so that is something we need to rectify!
💛...wow...beautiful piece of art/wood/craftsmanship...amazing...it's like a tenkara of instruments...
I agree 💯%!
Thank you very much! I had to look up tenkara :)
Hey! 2:47 - you can play the Parforcehorn with this hand horn technique. I'm a composer for these instruments and I often use it. Check ruclips.net/video/44vCbXZUIWY/видео.html at second ~0:50. Some informations are not quite correct, but keep going! Greetings from Germany
Thank you very much for your input! We are learning a lot as a result of sharing this video, including learning that some things we thought were true are not true. We will keep learning!
I would have lloved to hear that-The "echo there is amazing
If you are ever in the area, contact us and we can arrange to go on a hike together!
OMG, so many false informations..... You can change the Parforce from eb to b to switch between concert and hunting - all german hunting signals are written in b for the small Fürst-Pless-Horn so you can play with them.. You show a french cor de chasse in eb, which is a totally different instrument than the french trompe de chasse in d - with its techniques as hourvari, tayaut etc.....and all french hunting signals are written for the trompe. Please redo this video!!! (....and yes - I live in both contries and play all of these horns in different groups)
here is a very informative Video on the french style by the foremost German authority on both the French and German styles! (one of the few non-french natives knowledgeable on the subject) ruclips.net/video/goTffVqGboE/видео.htmlsi=7MFghWgo6mqQr7eI
Since making and releasing this video we have learned a lot more about these horns. Thank you for your comment -- we are working on better learning how to play these wonderful instruments. As with so many things, once you think you know some information about a subject you realize that it is only the tip of the iceberg.
Merry Christmas One and All
Gorgeous!
Lovely! It's ok if you don't know, but I recently moved to NYC and I love Alpine music, do you know where I can find more of it live around here? Festivals? Clubs?
Hello! I'm afraid that I don't know too much about NYC specifically...For the East Coast in general, there is the Appalachian Alphorn Adventure in West Virginia for those who are interested in playing or hearing alphorns in the wild. I would recommend contacting The Alphorn Institute; they probably know more than me!
@@sierrahorns awesome, I'll contact them shortly. Thank you!
Lovely! ❤
