Thank you! We changed the batteries in our door knob, tried greasing all the mechanisms, took it apart and nothing worked. Watching this, whacked it a few times and it's fixed!

Sadly this didn't work for me. It would go in, but still jammed every few times you would press it in. and turning the door knob wouldn't pull in the lock fully. I tried hitting it a few more times but it never got any better. I ended up buying a new lock but could have probably just bought this Schlage 16-211 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 Replacement Deadlatch . I would definitely recommend doing this, but be prepared for a plan b if it makes things worse.

Worked for me. I had it disassembled, soaking in vinegar to try to get any gunk out. Put it in a vice and two or three strikes with a rubber mallet did it. I applied WD40 before reassembly for good measure. Thanks!

the old take a hammer to it...cracked the door and bent the faceplace a bit, didn't work at first but then I got angry and tried to slam the door shut. and voila!

I found this video a few hours late. But it's definitely very helpful. My battery was dead and battery charger in the trunk. I tried the seats apart and used a pole to push the buttons to release the seats. I had stuff in the truck and I don't think I could of reached the latch. I was able to push the seat buttons and with the seats down and move stuff out of the trunk. The rope to the lever is cleaver and I will be doing that. I already put a rope to the seat latches but I would rather just do the trunk. I would of saved so much time if I found your video 5 hours earlier. Who ever designed seat latches inside the trunk is a d bag. Thanks for this video!

No, the hammer method did not work for me. It completely distroyed the latch mechanism and will not retract anymore no matter what.

Worked like a charm on a Schlage lever model, about 8 years old. Two wraps with a similar hammer and all fixed!

Okay look, I thought you were completely full of shit for this video. As I mentally prepared to just take the entire door handle apart I just figured it's already broke so why not try the hammer wack method. THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM WITH 3 SWINGS! THANK YOU ANDY!

wow it worked. I did not believe at first and just laughed off but when I saw everybody appreciated and that it worked. Went and did exactly, gave two to three hits with the hammer and lo it worked.

Worked for me today! I put a little Lock Ease on the latch afterward and an awkward snapping noise disappeared.
