Band In A Box Revealed. The fundamentals
Thank you very much Brian!! That's another item i can add to my songwriting!! Cheers.
You are very welcome Tiger. There is another way involving style changes. I'll explore that in a future video. Thanks as usual for watching, commenting and also giving me the idea to make this video. :)
Thank you Brian very much appreciated! Style changes is great! I’ve used on a few of my songs, but would be great to see how you do it. Can you also do a video on endings to songs. I can’t find for the life of me the video I used to watch to help me change endings. It was 8 years ago.
@@sabrinamariamusic Thanks for watching. Yes I will address various ways to end songs so you are not stuck with the BIAB one size fits all. I appreciate you bringing this idea to my attention. :)
@ much appreciated! 😃
@@sabrinamariamusic Thanks Sabrina for that suggestion. I was curious about that also!!
Thank you Brian. Really appreciate you doing the step by step process. It’s really helped!
Thanks Sabrina. It was your and Andy's comments on my last video that encouraged me to get this video done, so thanks for the inspiration.
I missed this video Brian. Thanks again!!
The comments in this video led to my latest video :)
Brian, 2 questions. How do you change time signature midway thru a song? Also, how do i enter the Australian songwriting competition?
@@TigerRogers0660 It can be a little complex to change time signature mid song but very doable. I will make a video showing how I do it soon. Entries for the Contest will re-open in March next year I think. You can find details at www.asai.org.au. They usually announce the comp a few months before the deadline.
@@BandInABoxRevealed-ke5tp Thank you Brian.
Thanks very much Brian!! I've been playing with this feature for weeks, but as usual you have shown me ways to make the process better with less steps!! BTW, i like the Gmaj7 in there.
Thanks TigerRogers0660. Some folks generate a lead break through out a whole song then cut and paste it in a DAW until they are happy enough with it. I much prefer to build it using the biab interface. When you consider that each bar can be played in 20 or more different ways, It gives you far greater control of the process and ultimately a better outcome. It just takes patience and sometimes a fair bit of mind numbing repetition. It's all worth it to get the best results for your music. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)
I've also listened to some of your originals. Whilst some might not be immediately appealing to me, i do like "The Fozi Song" & "Water Under The Bridge" !! The songs are all well written!! I have 2 or 3 songs in a similar style. Are all of these done in BIAB??
@@BandInABoxRevealed-ke5tp I tried the generating thru a whole song - then using cut & paste. Slow method. This method will not work if you have many sections with different chord patterns.
@@TigerRogers0660 Most of those songs were generated in biab over the last 6 months. A few of them are analogue recordings made with a reel to reel machine. 5 of my biab songs have made it through to the finals of the Australian National Song contest this year. I will find out the results next week when I attend the Awards night in Sydney next week. I'd certainly be interested in hearing some of your music if you'd like to drop a link to my email. biabrevealed@gmail.com.
@@TigerRogers0660 this method is also brilliant for small fills and riffs throughout your songs.
Thanks for that. I learned a lot. Problem is that I have BiaB 2022 and I don´t have a huge number of Real Tracks to pick from - certainbly not the number you had there. I´m considering getting BiaB 2024 but as I do almost exclusively acoustic folky stuff I wonder if that will get me many more usable Real Tracks.
My next video will do a deep dive on the step by step techniques I use to create these solos. In the meantime you can refer to my earlier video "Starting A New Song In Band In A box " to learn how I use the Multi Riff Tool. It demonstrates essentially the same process. Here is a link to that video. ruclips.net/video/iRp7oIlnxDo/видео.html
Yes, it all sounds lovely but you don´t explain HOW you generate the solos. When you say "bar by bar" what exactly do you do on each bar?
Hi Andy. The technique I use can be viewed in my video "Starting A New Song In Band In A Box" where I use the Multi riff tool to generate a guitar part. ruclips.net/video/iRp7oIlnxDo/видео.html . I should have explained it in this video as well. I will do a deeper dive in my next video. Thanks for watching.
@BandInABoxRevealed-ke5tp Thanks. I'll take a look
Thanks for the video! It would be great to see you actually doing this step by step or adding a link to the tutorials. Are there tutorials on the website? Also, would be great if you could do a video explaining what the green and blue markers at the top of the music sheet mean. Thanks for your great videos. I think I need to upgrade from BIAB 2021 to 24 as there’s so much more you can do in 2024
Hi Sabrina. I have covered this process in earlier videos. The Blue part markers indicate a softer approach to the drums and other instruments or "A" section eg: Rim shots on the drums. The green part markers indicate a heavier approach with snare hits ect or "B" sections. If you have no colour on the part markers the drums and instruments will continue as per the last colour indicated. The part markers, no matter the colour will always trigger a drum fill, Blue or green. No colour will not trigger a drum fill. This also applies to some of the instruments and helps to create dynamics in the arrangement. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@ thank you. I actually meant on the top, not the side. 2021 doesn’t have the thin lines on the top in blue and green. The ones on the side, yes, I use regularly. OK, I shall search for your video. Many thanks!
@@sabrinamariamusic Hi Sabrina. Thanks for clarifying. The blue and green markers at the top simply map out the part markers selected in the song and gives you a quick overview of the songs dynamics as chosen at the beginning of each bar. regards Brian.
@@BandInABoxRevealed-ke5tp thanks for responding. Time for an upgrade I think.
Thank you for the BIAB insights ... and digging your tunes ... an artist for sure!!
It's absolutely amazing! Thanks a lot!!!
Thanks for watching :)
Good of you to take the time to help others, you have a very patient and nice delivery. Well done from bonnie Scotland.
Thanks for watching. My mother was born in Falkirk Scotland and I spent some of my childhood there. I still have a tartan heart, In fact, I wrote a song called 'Tartan heart' which you can listen to by clicking the link in the description of this video. Take care and keep riding that Harley ") Yes I subscribed.
@BandInABoxRevealed-ke5tp I sensed something Scottish in your genes. I meant to also say you have a nice voice too and without doubt a good ear for a nice tune. Like yourself I gigged for over 30 years, pubs and clubs. Retired from it about 5 years ago and had a break from playing. You sound like you have had a similar experience and journey with too much gear and too much software and getting nothing done. I have a lot of stuff but like yourself I did buy a Zoom R20 with the idea of going back to old school and did consider the boss recorder. Your analogy is bang on about keeping it simple and working with less could mean more success in the end. Thanks for subscribing, stay safe and keep on filling up those sound waves in the nice way you do.
It didn’t sound any different to be honest. I’d stick with the original vocals as at least there’s more credibility that way. It’s natural.
I somewhat agree. I was dipping my toe into AI and probably should have used the slider to make it more intense.
Thanks for having this channel
Gosh, that was close 😅 Number 30 here. Congrats Paul and thank you, Brian, for the opportunity and for your videos.
OOH that last click of the wheel! Thanks for participating. :)
Great video! Many thanks!!!❤❤❤
Wow! I great surprise to be a winner! Thanks Brian.
You are very welcome Paul. I hope you capture some great music with it in places where it is otherwise impossible. :)
Congrats Paul from England!
Congrats to the winner! Thanks for doing the giveaway Brian.
I'm already planning my next giveaway. More details soon.
Fun giveaway, thanks for the opportunity. Im surprised more people didn't enter but I imagine that they just like using their DAWs instead.
Thanks for your interest. Yes, a lot of folks only have DAW experience these days. Having a pocket studio is really handy especially when travelling.
Hi, This video was very helpful. Question - why don’t you use BIAB to record your vocals? Thanks.
I use an external recording device because I have some issues with latency and I haven't really figured out how to use the reverb effects while monitoring live vocal recording in biab. If you have any advice on this topic please feel free to enlighten me. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video! Wonderful song! Thanks a lot!!!!
wonderful Brian. You are one of the most incredible songwriters I personally know. You have dedicated your life to the art, but also encouraging others. You are a great teacher. I just think where you would be now, had you had this amazing program years ago! I am sure you would just do what you always do, and put your music on hold, while you invited everyone else you know over to record one of their songs. Forever thankful and proud to call you my friend, and colleague.
Thanks Paul. By the way I'm looking forward to recording your song "Mortuary Station" next time you visit my home. Take care mate.
Between the drum fills, saxophone and your voice, I can hear why you would never want to be with out it. Yes the learning curve is a little steep, but it's well worth the climb. Thanks for posting.
Dude, your vocals are really nice! Who would have guessed.😀
@@dhoch 40 odd years of busking and gigging, you get to finding your voice.
Great program, use it as the basis for most of my tracks and people always think I'm using real musicians because I am. When I play the tracks for hardcore professionals they can tell but the average person can't and it's brought my music to life for 20 years
Hi Brian, Your song samples sound very good - & there is some quality songwriting there from what i hear!! I'm with you - i cannot be without BIAB now. I'm waiting to get the full version also - as like you i feel i need all the bells & whistles. Still, i have completed 3 or 4 songs & have just as many that need lyrics & vocals recorded. I also have learned to do nearly all of the process inside BIAB. Changing styles mid song i have found to be seamless with no obvious "edits" so to speak. A brilliant program!!
@TigerRogers0660 biab is the key to cataloguing my years of songwriting. I still have so many to record. Thank God for biab.
May I say, that I have know Brian for over 30 years. He is an astounding song writer...I am dobbing him in, but he is the Former President of the ASA, the Australian Songwriting Association, who travelled the country meeting the members and mentoring songwriters. He and his wife established an original open mic nights called Wax Lyrical, and these open mics still run across Australia. All of that means something, however, what impressed me the most was his ability one time to make the Name Sheen, rhyme with Japan!
@@paulconnelly6560 I did not know this! Huge respect to Brian!
@@paulconnelly6560 Thank you Paul for your kind words. I don't like to blow my own trumpet, that's another reason I love Band In A Box! :)
Thanks Tiger. It is totally worth upgrading. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.
I can't agree with you more on Audacity.
It's basic, It's free, It's easy to use and if you are anything like me, you only use it to top and tail and export a mix. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Regards Brian.
In my opinion as a whole the two pieces are nearly equal, it seems to me Brian's is little warmer and keeping in mind the gears used and their cost, the Brian's one is equivalent. Thumbs up for both !
Gotta watch out for those snakes behind the desks lol
As a maker of music: wow, Mike’s version really sounds much better As a consumer of music: Wow, great song. Both versions sound practically the same
May I ask what version of BiaB you are working with? Thanks.
BIAB 2024 It's worth upgrading if you have an early version.
Hi folks. Click here to listen to the finished song. "The Healing Of Love" www.reverbnation.com/brianhendersonward/song/34622123-healing-love-by-b-h-ward
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for the help. QUESTION - Just upgraded to 2024 but have an issue. When I try to regenerate a section (a few bars), BIAB just erases that instrument in the highlighted section but does not replace it?? I have to highlight the entire song to regenerate a few bars which ruins the rest of the work you've done with that instrument. How do we fix this? Is there a work-a-round until PGM releases a new patch?
Hi Bill. If I understand your question correctly, The answer may be to select the region you want to regenerate and then in the mixer select the instrument you want to regenerate. Right click on it, eg Bass, then select track action from the drop down menu. You can then select "Regenerate in selected region" this will regenerate the bass only in the bars you have selected. you can repeat this process for as many instruments as you like. It will auto freeze the results in place. I hope that helps. many of my videos demonstrate this process. Thanks for watching. Regards Brian.
I once had the Zoom R-16, which was an excellent multitrack recorder. This seems like an even better option, despite being significantly smaller.
I'm currently using the Zoom R8 along with Band In A Box 2024. It's a fabulous combo for those of us who prefer DAWless recording. The BR 80 is great for its size but it does have some limitations, no XLR inputs or phantom power. Good luck in the random draw on November 5th. Thanks for watching.
Nice work mate!
Thanks Brian. Another informative video!! With the ending did you just re-generate many times over until you got the exact thing that is playing in bar 9a ??
Yes and no! Once i found the progression I wanted, biab allowed me to simply repeat it for 5 bars while I faded it out.
Sit back, probably a bit long I downloaded the audio and put it in my DAW : Magix Samplitude Pro X 8, so I could do my own A/B comparison. Here are my thoughts and opinions - Just that, my opinion Brian : I Preferred the Acoustic Gtr, Bass and Drums Mike : vocals Mix Breakdown Guitar : Brian's Acc Gtr was crisper, small diaphragm condenser's tend to be like that. Mike's sounded slightly muddy in the mid range, even though being high quality small diaphragms, the off axis pair didn't give that stereo spread as does a spaced pair. Brian's was that, a spaced pair . Bass : Brian's Amp Sim had more sub, which is disheartening, as I have the same UA plugin as Mike. Drums : Drums are drums : when they're programmed but Brian's had more kick and snare "reality" and punch. Vocals: We are talking Neumann here, a top of the line, large diaphragm condenser microphone. Mike's sounded full and rich where Brian's was lacking that depth, that's only by comparison, Brian's recording sounded fine, just a little thinner. In conclusion : Was Mikes mix and master 73.56 times better than Brian's? I'm sure there'll be a few opinions about that. Listening, the way most people will, through my earbuds and on the phone, couldn't tell the difference Again, just my opinion
Thank you Brian for your in-depth, deep dive. I really do appreciate and value your opinion. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and listen through your high end system as well as consumer level audio.
Thank you for sharing your video. Both of you guys did an excellent job! Email sent to biab.......
They were surprisingly not as far apart as I expected. Nice one.
The little BR 80 is surprisingly easy and fun to use. I wish I'd had more time, I really believe I could have made it even more competitive. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good video.
Thanks!
Entered. Cool. [used the right email address as noted]
Thanks and sorry for the confusion. 😊
I started on an old valve tape recorder, then cassettes. Biggest mistake was going daw. BITB is great though
It sounds like we shared the same recording journey. :)
MY BAD!! I published the wrong email address. The correct address is biabrevealed@gmail.com
I've built myself a small studio with an old console and some outboard gear. Yes probably not needed but when i went back and forth against plugins, my hardware was quicker to dial in and sounded great everywhere. So this has prompted me to want to do away with a DAW as much as possible. Too much time staring at the screen, too many options, zoom in/out etc. Too much power to then screw up all your phase by trying to move stuff around. Then time align features robs the music of sounding unique. the trick is using a DAW like a tape machine and just starting and stopping it but lately i really want to get a digital stand alone 16-24 track recorder and pump my mixes or audio through my console, into my converters and then use the recorder for my start/stops and punch ins. Just remove the screen from the equation. I work on a computer most of the day, I think a lot of us do. This is making me want to get away from a monitor screen. Maybe not practical for live large studios but for home recordings or small budget productions, why not. As you said, makes you focus on what you hear, not what you see ( including all the options you know you have at your finger tips)
Learned so much from watching your workflow. Please complete next stage of the song when you find the time. Thanks.

Good on you John. I am keen to hear some of your results. Thanks for watching.
Great video, new like and sub from me (all the way from California - although I saw some fluctuating temperatures in your computer system tray over the course of your various videos and thought to myself, where is he, Melbourne?? - I grew up in Mulgrave and see you are in beautiful Sunbury). Anyway 1:43 I see you are using Audacity as your DAW for this video. Have you switched from Reaper and/or settled on a new DAW, and are you using hardware less on each subsequent video? Thank you and, go Saints!
Hi Tom. It was very observant of you to notice my location and temp range :). I visited California in 2015, LOVED IT! Especially San Francisco. I am using Audacity because I am trying to keep it as simple and cheap as possible. I am Currently In Perth in a $100K studio to see if I can replicate their results on a $250 handheld recording device. Wish me luck and keep an eye out for my next video.
