I believe those steam locomotives are based on midland steam engines that worked the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway

There's a noticeable major inaccuracy in this sequence. In reality, the Vienna Express was pulling about 11 Coaches. 9 of those Carriages had derailed along with the Train off the Bridge when it got blown up, while the 2 last Coaches miraculously remain on the Tracks. Though, despite this, the depiction of the derailment is accurate (and surprisingly, the filmmakers actually utilized a real Train to pull this scene off).

in a nutshell: a steam powered behemoth is somehow held back by a couple of goods engines and one express engine.
They appear to be Midland Railway locomotives.
Well, it's not grounded on anything, and therefore can't gain traction, unlike the locomotives.

They also utilized Steam Donkeys. (Non-self propelled Winches, used in heavy dragging, like Logging Work. They definitely are not the same used in the Western Frontiers but are close enough to share the moniker.)
I can only imagine what these engines would've said... "Horrors!" "Come on, lads! It's just a giant metal ball!" "Heave!"
