Did Matt Mullenweg Set a Precedent On What Is Expected?

WP Engine is now blocked from getting updates from WordPress.org. This, IMHO, sets a bad precedent on what is needed when it comes to giving back to the WordPress community. I mean we have to defend WordPress here. Nothing in the world is free. It's clear that WordPressORG also have to make some money and make sure others don't miss use their software.
holy shit, this video is amazing. you're so good at explaining
Thanks! I'm glad it helps. I'm soon to be doing another video on basic Linux commands and wp-cli.
I'm always looking for topics to cover, if you have ideas let me know.
@@areimann hmmm i mean personally, for my next project i plan on trying to learn how to integrate npm and vite into my workflow (for theme development). something on that if you use them in your workflow would be interesting. lk i would listen to you talk about anything wp related lol, you have such a calm demeanor ahaha. but like you said in your other comment, more wp-cli stuff would be cool! I'm shocked at how this vid doesn't have more views, i kinda found it too late (early enough for it to help me with search-replace though) for the current project i'm working on. btw i do have one question, the wp handbook says to add '--skip-columns=guid' to the end of the command.. but interestingly enough, i did it exactly how you described in the vid, and most the urls were in the guid.. i wonder why they would suggest that? as i would've missed most of the links i needed to change lol.
The way I see it, it is a de facto Elastic license instead of GPL right now, but with selective enforcement.
I had to Google Elastic license. That makes sense, and that might be a better license for Auto[matt]ic.
It seems to me that you're picking the side of the community, which is the side we're all on. We didn't build our careers around Matt Mullenweg, we did it around WordPress. This hurts everyone who has built their skillset around WordPress, and that's not ok.
Yeah, I've been using WordPress since 2008 and I didn't know how Matt was until 2013. The ecosystem is great, assuming it survives this current storm.
Looks like Matt may succeed in moving people away from WordPress. It's always interesting when organizations start to implode. Sad for all the innocent people get caught in the crossfire
I hope it's not imploding. It's defiantly changing...
Gotta set your audio gain better in obs.
Yeah, I agree. I'm getting better. :)
He needs to get on antipsychotics for a few months before doing anything more imho
Sounds like it's time to switch to Payload CMS lol
Payload?
Maybe $99/year for developers like Apple’s developer program? As that was too big of a bet I can’t see them stopping at big companies.
The problem is that isn't open source and free. That was one of the draws is that it was open source.
@@areimann you said it well. It *was* open source. Now it seems more and more like source available.
@@carolinas8886 Yep. It's a weird time. You can't open source a product, and expect people to give back.
3rd party developers are the bread and butter of WordPress. WP Core in and of itself does relatively little outside of auth and basic blogging. It's not difficult to replace the core functionality at ALL, it's the 3rd party plugins that wouldn't immediately come along for the ride. Developers can change that if they find something else to rally around and guide their users to. With enough momentum WP could be on it's last breath in 5 years given how much of it's lunch offerings like Shopify started eating.
Wow. Unbelievable. Thought through, this is the end of open source…
I wouldn't say it's the end of open source, BUT it could be a major problem if every project demands 8% of various companies revenue. :/
@@areimann In a way, yes, because if you have developed individually based on pro versions, but matt then change classes in the free version in order to sell own pro versions, then the WP concept reaches its limits. Let's think about the theoretical case of WooCommerce, where are thousands of individual customizations of pro versions are of course based on classes from the basic version. In the end: away from WP, towards real open source solutions. 😅
@@WebArtisanGermany Tell me more. Automatic/Matt changed class names on SFC?
Mullenweg is the absolute smartest but most dumb individual on the planet. Literally burning his bridges and own legacy
I can't make sense of his actions. He has some valid points, but the method is madness.
WPEngine has access to the entire WP backend to host on their own and run their own autoupdate infra. At their scale they should be contributing to the open source community and not just endlessly leeching expecting Wordpress to be okay with them confusing consumers with shady naming practices. The ethics of keeping the reviews of the custom fields app is questionable but I'm not sure on the terms plugin operaters agree to when publishing with the wordpress store. WPEngine is a leech is every sense of the word. They aren't just using the open source software (where there should be no expectations of giving back), they are repackaging with minor modifications and their whole business is reliant on Wordpress backend and reselling with confusing naming explicitly using "Wordpress" in a way that confuses the two. That practice hurts open source. WP Engine is not a friend of open source and I don't think godaddy or bluehost will be empathetic as they have negotiated for years with Wordpress to license the brand in a way that feeds back into the open source world. I think anyone who has a serious business hosting WordPress for clients that is using proprietary software for backend should hire professionals that can do proper risk analysis. WPEngine likely knew for months thhis was a risk and chose to not have a backup plan as it was too expensive. Can almost guarantee this was brought up their board as a risk at some point over the years, but..they went for maximizing profits and not planning their own infra or being a fair player.
This is completely abhorrent behavior and it's saddening that it could be setting a precedent in the open source community. I'm already working on getting off WordPress. I have a mostly simple site & I recently discovered FastHTML so I'm coding up a replacement and it's been amazing. I am actually adding some fun features with Python & Pillow (PIL) so I can generate certain images on the fly.
I would love a video on alternatives to WP, I have heard good things about Ghost CMS in the past but heard it was missing a lot. I was thinking of making my own custom theme for my personal blog but now with all the drama I am not sure and getting things to work in WP the way I want has always seemed like a fight, and you have to get caching plugins etc for WP to even feel usable so although I have helped people setup a ton of WP sites I feel like it is time for a change
I'd like that too. :) I've done a lot of research in the past, and I am looking into some other options, but to be honest, everything I'm looking at doesn't have a page builder like Beaver Builder or Elementor. We changed the way we build sites in 2016ish when we moved from custom themes to building using a page builder. It allowed developers to build plugins, and designers/creators to build out the look of the site without having to custom write CSS. I looked at getkirby.com/ (PHP based) but again, we could use it, but I really feel like without a page builder, we're setting ourselves back 8 years. This will all be settled and WordPress will continue to exist, but the damage to the ecosystem and the name is done.
I picked sides. This war only hurts agencies, developers, and end clients. And reading Matt's comments on other people's posts all around is just laughable. Petty and childish. It's all bizarre.
Hey Chris! Yeah, it's very petty. I obviously don't know the ins and outs of everything, but there *must* have been a different way to do this versus scorched earth method.
Chuckle..nice title. You promised. I'm waiting 😅
What did I promise?
Crazy how ppl believe ACF was stolen. Matt just did what ACF has been doing for years. Making billion from open source without so much as helping or contributing back
That's an interesting perspective.
I'm team matt
I can tell. :)
You mean, team delusional?
You mean the losing team?
@@theoDSP Both sides are losing sides.
@@areimann dont think so.

Not at all, I don't have any sponsors at all. That would be nice. I'm very close to not being on the fence though.
I wrote a custom and simple cms when remaking my girlfriend's website just for fun.and because did not like WordPress and it turns out it was a great idea
Point 18 says NOTHING about completely taking over a plugin that has no issues whatsoever. They didn't resort to point 18 with plugins that had servery security leaks for a longer time did they? No only with ACF. They just took it over, took over the ratings and comments as well, slapped a new name on it and left the logos inside the plugin including links to the ACF website and called it quits.
Yeah, I'm with you. It's very clear that it was a take over.
I'm not sure why this happened after 21 years of relative peace and stability. In my mind WP was this solid open source solution that was always reliable. Now? Not at all. I don't think it matters much unless you're a business on top of WP, or a plugin developer that's wildly successful. An agency or a smaller theme developer, you have nothing to worry about.
It really doesn't matter too much externally. I'm sure this will all be figured out eventually. The hard part now is that now when I'm trying to sell a WordPress site, I'm going to have to convince them that the ecosystem is stable. Not a fun place to be.
Give or take, ACF has being stolen not forked. If it was forked how come its no longer a new plugin but a hostile takeover
Yes, it's clearly a hostile takeover. I almost entitled this "ACF Has Been Forcefully Taken Over" but I don't like scare tactics in titles, but that is *exactly* what happened. Every plugin developer should take note. I'm not sure what to do about it yet, it's still too early.
It Is not about taking possession but about stealing
I can't imagine how it would feel if I worked really hard to get my plugin to 2 million and then it was just taken away without reason. It puts a stain on the WordPress eco-system.
Sounds like we need a new group dedicated to open source and forking Wordpress.
@@DeadOnArrival That's a hefty task and whomever would take it on, they would need a hosting company to back them. I would not be surprised if that is the end result. I think a lot of people would follow.
It’s happened before. The last one I heard about was when they sharted Gutenberg all over us.
@@LongPeter Are you talking about ClassicPress?
Maybe Wpengine could donate 8% for such an endeavor? No? 😂
Sure, if they don't we can always steal their IP.
Solid overview. I've certainly chosen a side in this fight.
@@mickmel which side are you one? ;) are you telling us?
@@areimann The side that doesn't steal plugins and tears apart the community.
@@mickmel Yeah, that's where I'm landing too.
I'm pretty sure I saw that text between Matt and Josepha on Twitter, so I believe you are correct. If we get a committee instead of a single point of failure, things will get better. I have zero confidence in MM. It's definitely a dark time for WP.
I don't know MM at all, but things don't look good from his perspective. Hindsight is 20/20, I guess... but I think the majority of the community would prefer a less destructive move made. We'll see how it progresses.
@@areimann I agree. I know I cannot get away from WP as our agency has 120 sites, but I think Im going to go hard on Laravel. I switched my personal site to Jigsaw SSG this weekend. Anyways, I really dig your videos and your work sir.
Yes, if you are a successful agency you might have to give them money if you advertise using it. As that was a trademark issue, it does not matter if you are hosting or an agency, all can be affected.
Yeah, it makes me a little nervous. I feel like we need more safeguards before people are blocked from getting WordPress updates.
Very useful. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I think this is well summed up. It's helpful to get your context. The code of conduct point is quite pertinent.
I wish I had more context. IMHO, Matt has not done a stellar job on defending his case. It all might be warranted but I don't have details.
Great overview. I feel like Matt might also be forgetting about how much the 1.3M WP Engine customers give back to WordPress. Not a high percentage, I wouldn't think, but certainly that's thousands of people. Your point of "how much should my company have to pay in order to keep getting updates?" is chilling and accurate. I hadn't considered that angle before, but you're right. Any hosting company that has WP-specific options (or even not?) is likely thinking about that very thing. And now you have Automattic trying to lock down use of the term "WP", which should worry people like you a little, though it's unlikely that will have any kind of chance if it ever goes to court.
@@mickmel Maybe we'll change the name of the company from Clockwork WP LLC to Clockwork Web Dev LLC. ;) Every hosting company should be concerned. It's not quite as open as we once thought.
Looking more at Mullenweg's blog, it seems as if he feels that WP engine has destroyed his baby on different levels. 1 - that WP engine strips down WordPress and doesn't sell "WordPress" and 2nd that his own mother thought WP engine was the owner of WordPress (his blog mentions this outright). To me, Mullenweg is angry because they have "taken" his baby, and made it something it's not meant to be (in his vision). What do you think? I've also seen a few mentions calling for Mullenweg to step down. What're your thoughts on that as well?
Stepping down is extreme. I'm much more interested in context and information about what led up to this. It all might be warranted but I'm not sure yet. Matt did answer a few questions tonight on a Twitter "conference call" or whatever X calls it. The verdict is out though...

Would love to see a video / series on troubleshooting WordPress remotely with SSH including a primer on what you need to know to SSH into a server. Why is the IP needed? Could the domain be used instead? What happens if you don't flush permissions? Why are the database name and the user name often the same? Where does PGP come in (if at all)? How can I troubleshoot Elementor and other page builders with SSH? How can I integrate Git into my WordPress workflow -- specifically on a NEWS blog, where data constantly changes on PROD while you are making edits on STAGING or DEV? I think those would be useful topics. Hope that helps!

Breakdance promises to be great, but it has one flaw... a strange pricing model. An interesting fact: I'm from Poland and for us the price is like 2-3 times higher ... other earnings in the Eastern Bloc countries. Imagine the situation that you are making a website and at some point you give up making websites ... life. Your client is left with a website for which he has to pay something like $349*3 = $1050 to update. Isn't that absurd? There is no price, e.g. as in elementor for 1 website, 3 websites etc., etc.
That's really weird. The U.S. pricing isn't too bad, but I totally understand the frustration if it is 3 times the U.S. price.
@@areimann I don't mean that the price is literally higher. My point is that the price is cosmic in relation to earnings. I don't believe that anyone normal will do websites in Eastern Europe with this.
