The Jazz Chord Bible Page 96 Chromatic Descending Minor Chords
Recognize this old sound? Very predictable but it is charming to the ears. I always wonder when the descending will stop. Where is it going?
Maybe we can do some more of these. Let me know if you dig it.
I can make a PDF or Guitar Pro 8 file for this and send it to you.
Not getting much request for that but I'm going to keep offering to create and send things out for no cost to those who care to study examples up close.
I recommend memorizing some of the examples.

These are the three primary chords of the key of A Major. A D E A is the 1 chord, D is the 4 chord and E is the 5 chord. Many basic rock, blues, country and pop songs use the chords. I recommend we memorize them. If I hear a random song on the radio or in a store, I can pick out that it is in the key of A. That is a handy thing! We can do some variations and make play the a as A Major7, the 4 a...

Strumming Nylon and Strumming Steel String Gibsons
It's neat how you add the B in. I seem to get caught in the loop of three chords without that tension resolution and just thinking about that dynamic helps in the rhythm of it, even if I didn't consider soloing over it.
Brilliant!
Clapton would just jam the D minor pentatonic over Layla. I'm not surte about on the record but I learned his improvised bit from the Madison Square Garden gig in 97 or 99 (it's on RUclips and my favourite version - the bassists reaction when he eventually starts the song is priceless) but, as is Clapton, he throws the 2nd in there too (the E note).
I've seen some of those live concert videos and noticed there is a lot going on! I figured he would change it up over the years. The student who requested I teach how to solo over the verse quit before I could get to how notes could work over these chords. Too bad for him, that would have been a tremendous lesson on how to extract some melodic ideas from a chord progression. Yes I noticed that D minor pentatonic business for sure. Thanks for stopping by.
Between the lead/rythm circut and strangulation switch Jaguars are so versatile and i love the short scale for reachability and ease of bends. They they got a whammy and a great look.
Looked on Reverb and Yow, the MIJ Jags ain't cheap! I've actually been thinking about getting a used Jazzmaster. Those soap bar pickups sound a bit warmer to me than the Jag, which I like.
This guitar and the strat with the tele neck seem to be 'your' guitars?!
Brook how exactly are you getting that great cool tone at such a low volume ? Please share , I’m desperate to find a way to do the same.
Hey Ben! I am plaugging into thr Mosky Silverhorse overdrive which is a super cheap version of the famous Klon. Next the signal goes into a Fender Reverb Unit reissue which has a Surfy Tank installed. Then the signal goes to a 1966 Fender Vibro Champ which is pretty stock. About as simple as it gets. Thanks for asking.
@ sounds great. I use the gold horse Mosky. Great pedals for what they costs.
You always sound great Brook !
You're the best!
Barre chords are something I'm just finally getting smooth at. Just repetitions over and over and over. I like your trick with rolling the index finger to go from the A shaped barre to the E shaped barre, that's something I still need to get locked down.
Yes those chords have to be automatic. Very few of my students are ready to really rip a rock song until they get this down. Way to go! So glad you noticed that trick.
Question where has Luna been?
She's laying in the sun right now and stretching out. She has been climbing up in the Christmas tree and knocking bulbs off too.
@brookhoover1384 Lol good to hear glad she is enjoying the holiday season
What does the drop edge look like?
It's an aluminum strip around the edge. I can look at it when I get a chance.
Now take that Fender jazzmaster and play it next to a monoprice indio guitar at about a tenth of the price. Goodby Gibson, hello Firefly.
What is monoprice?
@brookhoover1384 indio guitars are made under a company monoprice, that makes on ton of budget musical gear. My budget tele can be had for about a hundred and their jazz master under two hundred, with a decent soft case. They are playable and I honestly struggle looking at a fender say seven times the price asking myself is it seven times the guitar.
Nice Cheap Trick groove. 🤟
👍👍👍🙏
the best guitar teacher on the planet! I seriously mean that
OH MY GOSH! THANK YOU! I see so many good instructors online, that means so much! I am glad you like my funny ways! You make my year!
What the story of this Jazzmaster Brook ?
It's a Japanese Junior Collection Jazzmaster my buddy Don bought and we traded around and sold it a few times and it came back to me. It was initially a surf green and with a matte finish. I did not love the finish. A guy who owned it for a while ended up abusing it and there was some damage so I had my best friend who paints cars spray it a color code from BMW. I really like it. It's small and easy to handle.
@ cool. I bet it’s a blast to play.
It is fun being that is some sort of mutated shorter scale thing with a smaller body
I had the Mosky Golden Horsie myself and yeah it sounds great and is not a $5000 difference from the real Klon. More like 5 bucks difference. Crazy how a Chinese knock off pedal from Amazon or Ebay is basically the same as the most sought after pedal of all time. People pay big bucks to be cool!😎
I really like it! Did you see it in comparison with the Klon?
@brookhoover1384 I did!
Great Lesson really helpful thanks
You’re so cool
Holy smokes right back at you!
I picked up one of these last week. With a little elbow grease and adjustments, it just sounds great! I’ve really been enjoying playing it!! Coincidentally it has the dead spot in exactly the same spot yours does. Did you ever do any work on them? I likely won’t as I rarely play above first position, but I was curious about how it turned out, if you’d done the work. Cheers!
Hi there! This one I let go but I have a really unique one that I kept. It has a really good neck. It did not need much at all. I took it to a gig but did not use it on stage. I will attempt to do that
@@brookhoover1384 nice. I got mine to toy around with, for the most part. love the look of it, but between it and my Gretsch Streamliner, I think it'll also get regular use. it just sounds great!
Man I could see you geting invited all the time over friends houses ....hey bring your guitar Brooke .
For sure! Except I don't really know any modern songs.
Lol nice
It's pretty silly! Thanks
Is that a young Michael Jackson on the back of the neck??
Yes! Good eye
Nice man. I followed your link to the Badass video from a few years ago. Well done.
Definitely a darker sound than a Princeton.
Just watched this with pleasure! I followed the link from your December 2024 post.
yep. good ol' 4 chords song
Brook. I feel the same way as you regarding the emotional power of these chords. Wow eh. Amazing
It got me going! I love those chords!
My 76 old mother loves this shit. I personally am not a big fan of Christmas songs but what a great chord progression. So this Christmas is another great one from Mr Lennon. Thanks Brook !
I can take it or leave it. When the season comes, I just go with the flow!
@ me too bud me too. Between you and I , I’m always glad when it’s over.
I’m grown, but I think a small-scale bass would be pretty cozy to use while sitting in the “cockpit” of my cramped “studio”, lol. I mean, when using my gigantic Stagg P-Bass copy (recommended! Surprisingly decent), I’ll knock sodas over onto the floor with the headstock. I’ve played w a Squier mini bass in the store before, and, it sounded like a bass. No complaints. Good demo of this; Thanks for posting.
Very cool! Yes, the short ones are totally fine. I would recommend flat wound strings. The round wound have so much treble and bite.
@ That’s funny, because once I read somewhere that rounds are more recent, and that during the 60s etc bassists used primarily flatwounds, I did put flats on a bass of mine, and they sound good. Thx for that advice. And I did only moments ago push the button on Amazon for one of these, lol. Cheers !
Thank you very kindly 😊
Thanks for stopping by. Keep rockin
Hey Brook, thinking about snatching one up for $100. What do you think?
That sounds cheap! I'd grab that.
This may be my new favorite version of White Christmas❤
this is cool :)
Thanks Brook Merry Christmas 👍😎👍
Thank you! I really enjoy my old time Christmas tunes! Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas from New Zealand.
Thanks Wayne! Sending our best to you from the center of the US where the crazy people live.
What's your all time favorite Christmas song? I go with little drummer boy sung by Bing Crosby. I almost got all the way through a round of Silent Night, but kind of lost it. It's a kick to see joy to the world as just messing with a scale.
Just for a brief window of time I love them all except Santa Baby
Willie, epic music... But poor choice, his guitar is a mess, he spent how much time at 420, and didnt he snort his dads ashes?
No Keith did that. He's still rockin. Both are. Role models for health and longevity
Do you know how many classical guitar guys you creep out by taking a pick to that wonderful old nylon string. I actually completed a gentleman on his nail care who was playing at the hospital today. I hope that nylon finds a good home!
Yes, probably 3? Heh heh. Somebody tell Willie!
@@Greenjagsurf maybe you’ve heard of this guy Willie Nelson
Nice sounding guitar. Would you like the sound if you were strumming a nylon string guitar?
I don't mind it but prefer the Gibson J-100. Strumming a nylon string is ok. I shall try it and post a video!
Has an Egyptian or Middle Eastern sound to it. Edit: Ha! You even said so right at the end. I commented mid vid from excitement.
Yes it does! I get quite a lot of enjoyment from this scale too. Thanks
The seventh fret is the middle distance between the nut and the 12th fret is it?? So 2x7=12 ??
Thanks for checking it out and helping
@@brookhoover1384 I don't think that even people who are quite bad at mathematics need to actually "check" that fact
Thanks for helping, you know a lot of good stuff.
@@brookhoover1384 I didn't help you. I criticized you..
@@Ana_crusis I can take it. Thanks
A little advice for anybody who happens upon this video: when you get to the part near the beginning where he can't explain what harmonics are or why they are produced and falls back on the claim that it's just magic; move on to another video.
Agree!
