Back Door The Dashing White Sergeant Best Disco Record That Never Made It
I've been on Facebook, talking with some old fiends and musicians I've work with over the years. We got talking about 'night life' in the 1970's and clubs we used to go to and, in my case, play at. On the subject of disco singles, a band local to me in the North East were normally avant-garde jazz musicians of very high quality but they released one track for pure fun. It's a fantastic piss-take of the Dashing White Sergeant. Please enjoy Ronnie, Tony and Colin at their 'worst'. I give you 'Back Door'.

Saw them about 1991 -in the 'boro I think... I worked there for 3 years. The politics were perfect! When I was there 2 sharply dressed men stood out -taking names and addresses, allegedly for a fanzine... I heard later they came to a suitable end.

I love this music. Somehow or another, I stumbled across back door's first album in prob about 77 or 78. I also bought their other 2 albums that I knew about which were this one, (Another fine mess), and activate. I never met anyone who had ever heard of this band or these musicians. Since my childhood, I learned there was a fourth studio release called 8th street nights. I picked that up, and the reunion music from the 2000s. Since then, Tony & Ronnie have passed. Colin has a solo CD, There are some mind-blowing videos of this band here on RUclips. Virtually unknown virtuosos.

I hadn't heard these before but read they performed a great version of Blue Sunset. Searching for that yields nothing, so I scanned this hoping it would be included. I now want to hear their version more than ever. So far, I've only found a recent-ish Vin Garbutt version and yes, I know he wrote it, but the only time I heard the song before it was by two named folksingers, with backing, I believe, on a radio folk show in the 60s. I forgot their names but remembered the song ever since and would love to hear other harmonised versions. I think I'd love a version by these guys.

Hi there, my friend, this piece was recorded onto cassette for me over 40 years ago when I was 10 years old I've never known the band name or anything, and I've long lost it, and tried hard to find it again. Can you please tell me is the album, "Another Fine Mess" available somewhere online? I tracked the band Back Door down and found information about the album on wikipedia. I'd love to get hold of their music again and in particular "The Dashing White Sergeant." Thanks! :)

I'm a big folky, however watching this made me smile. I'm sure a bigger following could have ensued had they have dressed individually (Like Folkies do) The 'Spinners' also dressed the same and for me it did nothing to promote Folk music. It all feels a little corny :(

Hi, Previous FT2600 sold in the UK were LHD to RHD conversions, e.g. units photographed carrying Concord parts, but this was the first production line unit to be built in RHD format from new and sold in the UK. It was based in the North East but worked the majority of its early life on the continent. The last commercial owners were David Fox, Grangetown, then North East Leyland DAF bought it back for restoration knowing the history of the vehicle. I drove it for 10 years and it attended many vintage commercial vehicle events including the Trans-Pennine, Tyne-Tees Run and Ayrshire Road Run. I understand that the vehicle is now with a private restorer somewhere near York.

if as your vehicle shows it was registered in 1974 it cant lay claim to being the first factory built right hand drive DAF to be sold in the UK I drove for an Edinburgh haulage company, J &J Lawrence who bought 2 brand new 2600 in 1973 ( L registered ) followed later by 4 "M" Reg 2600, all supplied by a local agent direct from Daf. Lovely looking outfit really enjoyed the video

I'll ask Stew's daughter Heather if she knows if any other formats have been produced. I'm pretty sure Stew was going to be doing this, but he gets very busy (even in retirement!) so not sure how far he got with this. I asked my dad to convert all the albums from vinyl to digital for me, but he hasn't finished all of them yet, and need to check that the guys are happy for me to post publicly too. On a personal note, I knew most of the Fettlers and was one of the Teesside Travellers (folk dance group) that toured to/performed at festivals and they played the tunes for us sometimes. Bob Skingle and his wife came to America with us when we toured Virginia for a couple of weeks in the 80s. Really lovely man :) And Stew is a great character too. Very fond memories of those days :)

Hi chaps, As far as I know the old girl had a 220 BHP modified Leyland 680 engine. She had a 6 speed ZF crash gearbox, 12 speed if you used the splitter, that was backside first in operation. I also drove Volvo coaches at the time, with the normal 6 speed layout, and was forever trying to set off in 5th. She is currently undergoing restoration near York and should be back on road soon.

Very nice one! Am I right if I think this is the 250 hp version? Is this one still alive btw? Same as the later 28/33 and 3600 the 2600s disappeared rapidly from the european market after the mid 90s. This wasn't a typical case of poor quality resulting in a short life span. Nope, it was strictly the opposite! Exports to African and MiddleEast countries became a serious business after the 80s and during the 90s. They had strong need for technically simple trucks, without complicated electronics.

A little story behind this recording. We'd just sung Ring of Iron for the Middlesbrough Highway and didn't expect another. We got a phone call, out of the blue, to ask if we knew any songs about Whitby. Bob Skingle had written Caedmon, so we recorded that. We thought that was it then got yet another phone call asking for a song, at short notice, as one of the interviewees has said something controversial and they needed a song to replace the 2 minute spot, thus Whitby Whaler at double speed!
