The New Bev does it right, especially compared to chains. My biggest complaint is always the sound at AMC is so quiet half the time if you’re not in IMAX or Dolby.

I will say I feel like the loudest movie I saw was Civil War this year at an AMC but it was IMAX. New Bev is a great spot, can’t beat the selections

I love American Graffiti as well! I feel a bit closer to Dazed but Graffiti is still great. Lots of wonderful characters and bits from there, you got Ford, Howard, Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, and Wolfman Jack. If Dazed is my parent's era, then Graffiti is their parent's era.

Your video was very interesting in your description of "Meet Joe Black," which I love because of the character interactions and the interesting themes, and especially Claire Forlani and Anthony Hopkins (but all actors were fantastic!) !! But I don't agree with your take on Anthony Hopkins, and how he was chosen for Death to take a holiday. Maybe read this, and watch it again! It was presented that he (Death, or "Joe") heard Anthony Hopkins as the father Bill, describing true love to his daughter Susan (Claire Forlani) in the most intriguing and beautiful way! The writing was simply fantastic, and it's a wonderful scene! Death, who was coming for Bill in the beginning, was so intrigued that he decided he wanted to stay on earth for a while and experience love himself! That's why Bill got a reprieve from dying - not that he needed to redeem himself and make amends with his family, but he simply got this bonus time to "show Death around" this life! And Bill DID love his family : he had had a wonderful love with his wife who had passed already, and loved his daughters, and was an extremely clever and honest businessman! In fact, Death said that Bill had lived an exemplary life, and that's another reason that he wanted Bill to show him around! What you said about how Bill used his time left was right : he enhanced his time with his loved ones. But when you watch it again, pay close attention in the beginning when the premise is set up. It's all about a GOOD man getting more time on earth so that Death could experience love and life. (This is all just the premise, so I haven't spoiled the actual movie for anyone who hasn't seen it) And yes, this is a fantasy, obviously, but it's presented in a serious way, and is a remake of an old movie called, "Death Takes a Holiday." It's beautifully shot, and with a beautiful music score, so although long, it's really pleasant to watch! And it gives one a LOT of food for thought!

great treatment of a fantastic film that deserves rethinking. Richard Feynman in Six Easy Pieces 1963 said about physics 'one needs a considerable amount of preparatory training even to learn what the words mean...we can only do it piece by piece'

It's 2024 and I'm in my 60s and I've just seen this movie for the first time. And so I am searching for the opinions of others about it and came upon you. I've heard a lot of accolades and discussions about the cast calling them by their names but I've seen few if any that mention Melora Walters by name. There is talk about Tom Cruise, PSH, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly and William Macy. Melora Walters nailed her part. I find her Claudia mesmerizing and the character for whom I had the most empathy. I pulled for her. I agonized with her. If any deserved forgiveness and redemption, it was Claudia.

This is a masterpiece. Pure and simple. Such a collassal project that never misses. The acting is perfect. The pacing, the dialogue, the setpieces, the direction, the music. Every emotion under the sun is portrayed to perfection. I agree with a previous comment. Any one of these actors could have won an academy award for this movie. Amazing piece of work by everybody involved. The sequence where all the actors sing along to Wise Up sets me off every time. So moving. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. Its addictive but so emotional I have to immediately watch Amelie just to get out of the hole of sad emotions. Must have been such a hard task to pull this off as its a crazy, complicated script of many stories that eventually collide.I salute you PTA!❤❤❤❤❤❤

The book wrecked me. I have only just discovered it a couple years ago. I am a fan on McMurtry and was looking for something new from him. I remember rolling my eyes when reading an overview that was detailing a coming of age tale of these teens in a Texas oil town. By chapter 3 I was so enthralled, I was helpless. Lois gets a lot of the lines that form the overarching theme. Towards the end, Sonny apologizes to her (read the book to find out for what), and she tells him “you’re going to have to stop apologizing to women or they’re gonna eat you alive.” At the end, he uses that when Ruth is chewing him out: he just lets her finish her tirade, and she tires of it and gives in to him, going from yelling at him to comforting him. I would say there is two main antagonists: Jacy, who is a personal antagonist with an antagonizing personality. In the book, Jacy is very sociopathic. She uses people for whatever end she thinks they can get for her. She uses Lester to get into the clique where she can springboard from him into some better relationships, she uses Abilene to “get the town talking”, and she uses Sonny to feed her demand for narcissistic supply “get the town talking (again), and she uses Duane for something to do, and it seems like a person to practice manipulation tactics on. and the other antagonist is FOMO(Fear Of Missing Out) Sonny is attacked by both, but the fear of having lost what could have been just grinds away at Lois, Ruth, and Sam.

I just rewatched this the other day. I've loved it but was afraid it would crack my heart wide open, and it did. I'm just a year separated from an abusive husband of 23 yrs, so there were personally meaningful scenes we had shared in a good time - I needed to cry, finally. You were right. Scenes that would have been shortened would have lost us as the participant, moving through a discomfort to acceptance. Anthony Hopkibs brought gravitas and ease. But for me, it is all Brad Pitt the actor - the awkwardness of Death in a human form, the joy of peanut butter, the most believable sex scene ever, and he ŵas just so beautiful. Yes, beautiful. Cinematography Visually sumptuous, musical score stunning. Scenes in the hospital so memorable. Thank you for your enjoyable expose.

Just watched this movie - wow, it is one of the worst films I've seen in a LONG time. Terrible acting and directing, humor that just doesn't land ("wow I like peanut butter haha" as a punchline about 10 times), and a script that features basically nothing. There's no conflict, no character growth, just nothing at all. The plot is barely hanging together - is the female protagonist in love with some human guy from the coffee shop, or the other-worldly being of Death himself? Does Bill her father lament that Death is sleeping with his daughter, or is he totally cool with it? No one will ever know. It's like they made a movie and forgot the part where they actually write a movie. If you love the Minions movies and the philosophical depth of r/im14andthisisdeep, this will be right up your alley.

Nice discussion of this film. I love it for its beauty, simplicity, and glimpses of French provincial life at the time, like the sea shanty singer and other minor characters. One can learn a lot about ways to interact with others from certain conversations in the film - such as Margot's deconstructions of Gaspard's behavior; she really tells it like it is, though kindly. Other favorites of mine are Claire's Knee, Pauline at the Beach, My Night at Maude's, and la Collectionneuse.
