Backpacking with Kids, Tips and Family Fun
In July 2021, Grace (39), Scott (46), Jack (9), Bo (7), and their 3-year-old Husky/German Shepard mix, Bella, took their first family backpack. It was a three day, two night adventure into Desolation Wilderness in the Sierra Mountains of Northern California. We learned a lot about our equipment and our selves, and we had fun with video cameras in the great outdoors.
We plan to take an annual backpacking trip together for as long as our bodies and schedules allow. Finally, if you like this type of family-fun, lessons-learned content from a low-key family in Sacramento CA, please consider liking this video and/or subscribing to the channel. Scott, Jack, and Bo Yates took their Honda motorcycles to Foresthill OHV in Northern CA on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2021. Jack, 9-years-old, and Bo, 7-years-old, say they want to be RUclips stars one day. Scott (dad) is convinced they have zero idea about how much work goes on behind camera to prep, shoot, and edit a YT video. On this day, the boys helped with the cameras and later the...

Only a legend is allowed to drink right out of the pitcher!
Looks like you had a wonderful family vacation!
This was nice. Thanks for sharing. I was able to record a short clip of one flying a kite. ruclips.net/video/LXsZhGsNwVs/видео.html
Great video! How many miles a week did you train? Avg pace? Back to backs? Cross training? Just curious because I’m a slower runner 9- 9 1/2 min/mile. Scared to sign up lol.
According to their website state parks, state recreational parks, state beaches are legal to fly your drone. Wilderness state parks, historic state parks and cultural preserve are illegal for flying drones. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29229
CA needs to be revamped.
thanks but i like to get drone if you help i will happy this is my gmail jacksonkamala816@gmail.com
I know this video is 2 years old but most police just say it's not allowed even if it was allowed they don't want the hassle it brings with people who are not responsible with them.
Waiting for the souvenir shopping🤷♀️?????
DATE AUGUST 4TH- 2018. I live redwood city and having a drone in the bay area is pretty much useless. most cities have banned drones, national parks and some state parks also don't allow the use of the it. I will have to return it.
I've flown in several state parks and my mavic always let's me know that I'm in a geological area or in a class D airspace. It makes me sign or check off a waiver that says I am responsible for my actions. I've noticed that if I stay below a 100 foot or less ceiling, I seem to be ok. I also pre-plan the shots I want, I get them, and then I land and pack up. I don't fly or attract attention. I've noticed that when I grab attention from a civilian, they tend to ask questions while I'm flying. I don't want to be rude and tell them that I'm flying and need to focus for safety reasons, but that's what I've had to do a few times. I look for launch areas away from civilians and fly into the area I want to get the shots. It's worked so far. It also helps having small drones in highly populated areas, and the larger drones for non populated areas.
sac high should play all away games . worst field in sac . might as well play in the parking lot
Parks rangers and officials who want to ban drones aren't thinking this through. How many people have been killed by drones in parks in the U.S. None. However, how many people drown each year in parks or die in boating accidents. Hundreds. Yet there is no move to ban swimming and boating in parks. Or how many forest fires are started each year by people being reckless with a campfire. Yet, camp fires are still legal. Parks don't ban swimming, boating or campfires because of a few people being reckless. So why the over reaction with drones?
nice i am a grant player
Cool bidep
Its illegal in California to have fun, enjoy yourself, make friends , or do anything that can give you happiness
Wrong! we got weed and beautiful women and these laws are there so everyone can enjoy nature.
In 2017 I was helping a video production company shoot some video for a documentary about the railroads. I was not able to get permission to fly over the railroad museums in either Jamestown or Old Sacramento because they were in State Parks. I actually talked to the head ranger on duty at the one in Jamestown. The answer was basically if we let you fly everyone will want to and it will become a safety issue. I was also told that private land owners near the good spots to view the historic trains had registered their property as no fly zones. In California there can be privacy concerns with aircraft or people with cameras loitering around private property. In California if you knowingly enter the airspace over private property without permission with the intention of taking photos or video, you are guilty of invading someone’s privacy. There are some exceptions, but in general if you have people or property in your footage you need to have permission from the people and the owners of the property to use that footage. This can add a significant amount of time to setup a video shoot. I hesitate to go down a mile long driveway with signs saying the first shot will be at chest level, and the second shot will be at head level. You really don't want to agitate any of these people as the quality of the experience will degrade exponentially in a short period of time.
Take the law out of the questions. But still going to use some leagal guide lines. So this is just me. If the quadcopter weight is heaver than a stick of butter. I won't fly it in a residential area. Or over any person. In state parks and other safe flight area's if 12 or more people should be there all flights are off. Easy to be safe if you're willing to police your self. Now micro quads I'll fly any where any time they are not capable of doing damage or causing injury. it's better to be safe then sorry. God bless.
Of course safety first, everyone can respect that. But many policymakers are just $$$grabers, have drone industry make large donations to these bloodsuckers and all the excessive regulations will vanish.
That torn flag is a nice metaphor for the state of American individual rights. America has become such a totalitarian state that I decided to move to Japan. I'm tired of the taxes, being hassled in my own home, and the inability to take a photograph in public. Japan is such a delightful departure from that crap.
I'm not sure I understand why so many are freaking out over drones, from what I have researched there are lots of stories with lots of headlines but no FAA report that confirms the fault of a drone was responsible as per the news story. we have become a country of paranoia yes a drone might take down a 747 airliner (doubtful though) but any half brained fool wouldn't take that risk.

Great video. Love that race!

I've run across authorities that simply don't like drones and have preached inaccurate laws to me before my flight, and I've run into authorities that are fascinated by them and want to learn more from me wishing their department would invest in them for surveillance purposes. Its' always best to comply whether they are right or wrong. I have heard stories of confiscation of a pilot's drone, which is just wrong, but again the circumstances could have been tainted. Fly, but stay out of my path I say! www.JoelJustinProductions.com
I do have to say that you cooperated peacefully with the officials, and I salute you! Some people would make a fuss about it.

Scott have you ever considered following youth football!?? Like Sacramento having its own Friday night tykes?? Please reach out lets talk
It's illegal to fly a drone?
My issue is not a legal one. It is safety. Flying over people is just not a good idea, the equipment is not that reliable. This is as a drone pilot with 4 drones. Those of us that have been flying for decades without these issues have done so following a voluntary set of rules that have served us very well. The FAA never got involved with us until suddenly everyone had a drone and was flying it around people and residential neighborhoods. There is also now the privacy concerns although most of those don't stand up in court. If you do it outside you have little right to privacy is the general rulings that I have read. Fly safe it is a great hobby.
People are afraid of what they do not know. Also, each time more people try to have say and act on things they do not know anything, or more dangerously, when do know little about it. This is a recipe for freedom restriction.
Here the state of Wisconsin you not allowed to fly drone in state park I went to the Wisconsin state park on line
I believe they should have been more worried about flying a torn flag than your drone!
Was going to fly over there, I live in Davis. I would do the same thing.
Based on what I've been able to gather, the state (and yes, the national) park system is extremely hostile to quad owners and it's best to take your money, patronage and time to remote locations where flights won't be a problem. The California news media, politicians and government agencies are pretty much dead set to fight drones and their owners tooth and nail and it isn't worth it to invite problems. Just look at the state news coverage about UAVs and it's 90 percent anti-drone in coverage and often never consults the UAV pilots to get a balanced perspective from that community. I've pretty much written off California anyway since it's laws are increasingly draconian and representative of only a singular viewpoint with no room for other points of view to be considered. My recommendation is to fly in Nevada or Arizona where there is still some measure of liberty left for people who wish to pursue their hobby of UAV flight. Those states DO value your dollars and WANT your patronage. Go where you are welcome.
So are you able fly in state park in California
I cannot comment on US law, but in UK possibly not legal, too close to buildings, too close to people not under your control, flying over congested area, and the catch all "Reckless flying", not saying you were reckless, but the UK law may deem flying so close to a highway as reckless. Not trying to be critical, but you asked for comments, and UK/US legal systems very different. However in UK, you would be very unlikely to have the cops after you, unless close to a prison, power station, football stadium etc.
Just had a drone collide with a helo at Na Pali coast on Kauai which happens to be a state park in Hawaii. Drone flights are NOT legal in state parks here and the owner has not come forward to claim responsibility. These are the incidents by the few that affects the whole. Glad no crash or injuries or worse.
Keep in mind that part of Old Town Sacramento is State owned and the other part is City owned. It looks like where you were flying from is the Sate owned part, and you would need to follow the state guide lines for flying in a park. If you were taking off and landing from the city owned area you would follow the City of Sacramento Drone ordinance.
What is it with this obsession authorities have with drones. How many people die each year from cars, horses, falling branches, bees , marbles, playing football and other sports? The list is huge but no one to date has died from a drone, out of 7+ Billion people. Drones would have to be one of the most benign technologies on the planet. Sure an Ehang 184 could be dangerous but it's not a DJI Phantom or even a UAV. I see people braking the rules every day and no one blinks but pull out a DJI Spark or Phantom or what ever and evryone is on to you. It's so phobic it's embarrassing to live in the 21st century. It seems every generation has its phobias, once it was gay people now its drones..
Video looks good and safe. I would have asked the Ranger for the code or law he was referring to that would provide me with backup for educating myself and my fellow pilots, as the research showed no such evidence.
I’m sorry, but the American government is in no position to tell a hobbyist when they can or can not fly their ‘drone’. It is complete hypocrisy when numerous death have been caused by military ‘drones’. You have my permission to fly your Phantom 3 where ever you like as you are a decent, good willed human being.
the govt. makes a law and enforces it, that is its position it needs to be in. period. now, the whole point of drones is to be able to go and see where you can't easily or in a timely way walk or drive. so the rules can get in the way of this. we need to get the rules changes or eradicated outright.
Nice camera work Scott
It's fine to fly in most CA state parks unless posted www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29229 But a problem with many drone pilots is an apparent lack of simple common sense. Wherever you fly, always imagine what might happen if your drone suddenly lost power at that location and dropped to the ground, and fly accordingly (i.e. change your flight route or not fly there). Also, if you notice any other aircraft/helos in the sky near you, land immediately until they're gone. And another good rule of thumb is don't fly near or over people. Doing such should help keep you out of trouble in most instances.
Quadcopter 101 nice link, thanks for posting this!
iMovie
Unfortunately if you were making money from your RUclips channel you’re uploading of this video may not be legal. In order to be in recreational drone pilot you may not make money from the use of your drone. If I were you I would invest in a 107
Photography is not a crime and using a drone for B roll, background pictures or videos is protected and the FAA rules say as much. The FAA cannot make laws but only guidelines that should be followed as long as they are based on reality and not some arbitrary possible situation that may happen.
