Looks sick
How has the Werner bandit treated you vs the 60?
It is my go to paddle if I want performance. I got used to the thin fiberglass. It started out being a bit slicey in the water. Now I don't get any slice with it and I get so much more power. Especially at my home wave that is hard to paddle into. I can get definitely more speed. That said. My other train of thought when river running and crushing into big waves or holes that could flip me is to also have a beater 60in Carslile paddle so if I do flip I am ok with letting go of my paddle so I can be quicker at reflipping and reentering my boat.
David, I couldn't find your video about your emergency air supply tank which would be a better place for me to ask you these questions but here I am. In regards to "new/novel" river safety equipment (like your small emergency air tank) do you think having a CO2 pull string inflatable pfd over your rafting pfd could/would help in an emergency swim where you are stuck underwater or would it be a hindrance? In the same vein: do you think a small compressed air tank hooked up to a valve on your dry suit to partially inflate the dry suit would work in an emergency swim situation where you are stuck underwater or be a hindrance? Thanks in advance if you get around to answering my silly questions.
HERE IS VIDEO at the time stamp where I use the spare air! ruclips.net/video/x8732emWxBs/видео.html - This device gives you up to 15 full breaths. In a panic scenerio you will just burn those 15 breaths very rapidly and will have at minimun 15 seconds of air. With practice it takes me 4-5 rapid breaths to get back to half way relaxed. I would practice with it more but when pumping it up it requires filtering the air through new desiccant do make sure the air is dry. I really worry now practicing with it that the air could be mildewy and so I don't practice anymore with it. Here is the 25 second downtime video HERE IS 25 SECONDS DOWN TIME! ruclips.net/video/Tp1mPGUt0pQ/видео.html People don't realize this could happen on a lot of different rivers at higher flows. And this seam is deceptive as what would be considered a dangerous area. This video is why I wear my ski helmet instead of the kayaking "hard hats" Getting knocked unconscious is a real risk out there. KAYKER GETS KNOCKED UNCONCSIOUS ruclips.net/video/Q9dOoy-cH0o/видео.html From my research the leading causes of kayaker deaths is being pinned and having water flow over the head which is very common. Second to getting pinned in wood and not being able to exit or surface for air. Third being getting beat down in a terminal hole that a kayaker will lose enough air before wet exitting that they wont surface before being able to catch a saving breath. As an R1 rafter I am most worried about falling out head first in violent shallow rapids that would cause me to get knocked out especially since I mainly boat solo. My second fear is to get body pinned between rocks which is a real concern out east. My greatest fear and is founded is surfing shallow holes that are backed up by submerged rocks that could underwater pin me. Case in point. Look at the small but sticky hole and you can see its back up by rock. If fell out on the lowside my body would right up against that. These rocks in the west might be less undercut but out east these same situations present very obvious deadly senerios. To answer your question about the drysuit air idea. I think it wouldn't be gauranteed that you wouldn't be straining for air even if there was an air pocket some where in your suit. But near the shoulders and arms above the pfd would be where to have a tube coming from. I thought over the counter canned oxygen could work undewater but this video time stamped shows it doesn't ruclips.net/video/2xlA5Q_QYAg/видео.html The spare air has a mechanism so you can put your mouth over the mouth piece and blow out to clear the small amount of water between your mouth and the nozzle or you can push down on the top to release air and clear out that small amount of water. That does waste a few if not a lot of breaths when using that feature. Final thoughts...I hate being underwater. It feels unpredictable. It feels like even being under for 3 seconds feels like your going to die because you already exerted a ton of energy before getting yourself into that situation. So having a life line that can be air up to 2 minutes if used right is unbeatable. On the new river in west virginia I decided to swim through a nothing rapid. Since I am a boater in the west I wasn't aware of all the hazards that ledge/pool drop and seams with deep eddy's. So I let my boat float next to me and I dropped over a small drop right into the seam and did not surface for over 5 seconds. Nothing crazy. But I had never had that experience so it just felt like I was going to die the that whole time. And that scenerio is almost gauranteed to surface me in due time. Compared to getting trapped and then needing to gut untrapped with undercuts and strainers. That is when 5 seconds is going to come and go. And if in a panic. I bet even the experienced boater might only last 15 seconds. So having a gauranteed device that can be accessed by tilting your head down over the mouth piece and have an extra 15 seconds to 2 minutes is why I wear it. I know that if i'm in a panic I could die in the next 5 seconds. On having an inflated co2. My thoughts are that I want to get sucked under in all holes to get flushed through. I am very happy with hole mechanics of neutrally bouyant objects to get sucked through. From a physics perspective the best water craft to go through the biggest holes on the planet is a trunk of a tree. Basically neutrally bouyant and may get surfed once but not twice. I do understand once you have hit the bottom of the river and are slowly surfacing that a co2 air bladder would help. But that is where I would rather have 2 minutes of air in a device inches away from face. Rather than pulling on air bag. And agian, the time where the air bag is useful is when you would have surfaced anyway, just slower. There are plenty of places where kayaker go under ledges especially below waterfalls. And in most undercut situations I don't see an air bag being useful. I would not pull an air back if stuck under wood. But might pull it if stuck under an undercut. This video had an exit but just shows how fast the body can get sucked under rocks and if there isn't a body sized exit. A body will get pinned just as easy as any wrapped raft around rocks. In this situation I would rather have 2 minutes of air and the ability to identify an exit and fight for it. KAYAKER GETTING SUCKED UNDER ROCK... ruclips.net/video/RuDslzKZhXI/видео.html
@r1-ing Fantastic reply. Thanks for taking the time to link those videos. I've seen most of them and even held my breath with you on one of those air tank videos! I haven't seen the ski helmet video yet and I'm about to check that one out. I think your spot on about the negatives of the CO2 pfd and the "inflatable" dry suit idea. That's why I like to run an idea past a person who has a real engineering mindset. Again, thanks for the great reply.
Thanks for your research on what can and work and why! The Helmet video was a very experienced kayaker just tipped over going into a hole and hit his head. That surprised me because it didn't seem shallow. But I get that the force of the water makes it like a baseball bat to the noggin. This video just emphazised to me that kayaking helmets should be rated to the same impacts an enduro mountainbiker or skier hitting a tree might face. Thanks for your research on what can and work and why! Especially "cool" people in the community that would tout some safety devices they like the most would go along way. It would make pdf's with spare air mounts, make co2 air bags cheaper or standard etc... I am not that cool person so I again appreciate your inquiries and efforts you make for yourself. Its a worthy endeavor. Because it means that you want to push some limits but lower the risk. On a side note: I thought it would be way cool instead of having a air bag inflate. It would be a co2 activated waist inflatable river board. Or in the general shape of one. Because for a solo kayaker or solo R1 rafter. There could be the other scenario that would happen on many canyon class 4-5 rivers where you lose your kayak or you lose your raft. And to have a make shift river board would be all you need to effectively stay in the river and keep running what your running to retrieve your gear or get head to the take-out. The Helmet video doesn't show much and doesn't even seem shallow but tipping over and on the downstream side of the hydraulic he smashed his head against a rock and went unconscious. That is best case scenario for not drowning because his buddies pull him out and he starts breathing again. In Montana we have a one mile stretch called the Wild Mile up near Kalispell that has a festival. It is continuous 4+ or low grade class 5 whitewater. A gal kayaker passed away after battling a coma for a coupe of weeks. She sustained a hit to the head after tipping over. But her helmet must have got ripped off for the injury she sustained. So that could be the anomaly but the style of R1 rafting that I am trying pursue is surfing waves and holes and run harder holes. Which always are shallow and very fast moving water locations in rivers. Here is a timestamp surfing near Boise. I messed and lowsided and went head first out of the boat into shallow hole. I was able to tuck up against the boat and hold on to protect my head. But took a big hit to my hip that hurt but was able to continue paddling. I paddle by myself. But that day I knew the dangers. Very shallow wave. Nobody around. Getting knocked unconscious although rare is always on my mind. I have no idea why river surfers would ever risk no helmet. But its a sport similar to skateboarding where the experienced riders just know how to fall 99% of the time. I hope... HERE IS THAT HIT TO THE HIP - ruclips.net/video/nbD_Nvi8xQ4/видео.html
If you use Liquid Metal on a ryzen 7000 or 9000 cpu make sure you use a silicon thermal paste guard so that the Liquid Metal doesn’t get under the IHS and onto the exposed circuits and cause a short circuit. I also recommend using some sort of conformal coating or nail polish on the surrounding circuits just in case.
Do you still skate after all these years? Don’t see any recent skateboarding videos.
No...its a bummer...I have been dealing with chronic back, hip, and knee pain...super weird to be only 41 struggle with mobility.
This is awesome! I was a guide for awhile but just picked up a Mini-me to try smaller rivers. Thank you very much!

God dam I want do that! Nice work Dave! Where was this? I think we are in the same region-ish.
I am from Montana but was on a road trip through Colorado. This was in the town of Glenwood Springs. They release a dam 2 miles above town for a year round class 3 run this wave always has something to play on. At high water it would be tough to catch an eddy.

@@r1-ing I'm still living in the Southern part of Illinois. I think it'd be sweet seeing ya do more road trips! I need to get outdoors a lot more. We could go to a local river or lake or the Current River over in Missouri and hangout together there. I'd love treating you to lunch too!
@@travisrolando8205 Cool! I will definitely keep that in mind. One my goals is to hit up wave park across the country and there is a few in that region.
@@r1-ing Sweeeeeet! 👊💪I love seeing that you'll be keeping that in mind brotha man! I love that goal big time too! It'd be sweeeeeet getting to see ya set up your raft when it comes to inflating it and putting your gear in it and the frame on it! Hope you're doing great!
Hell yeah. Have you still not figured out how to post shorts yet?! I can help you out real quick if need be
I actually don't know how to take my gopro or dslr footage and make a short but I am ok with the standard format. Would you send a link to a tutorial or what type of help were you thinking?
@@r1-ingIt won't let me post a link so I cut and copied the text: Film your video as normal using the 8:7 aspect ratio on the camera. When you import your video, reframe the video to 9:16 and make sure it's less than 60 seconds long. Then upload that 9:16 video to RUclips. Just film in 16:9 like normal except turn your camera sideways. Now you have a 9:16 video. The Hero 11 introduced 8:7 (almost square) so you wouldn't have to turn your camera sideways or choose between 16:9 or 9:16 - the fact that it's almost square means you can crop into it to get any aspect ratio you want without losing too much information from either of the sides. If you shoot in 8:7 you can make edits for RUclips and RUclips Shorts from the same video source. However, if you don't want to do any cropping or editing after filming then you can just turn your camera sideways.

@@yesterdaysnews3524 Hell Yeah! Thanks!!!
Been waiting for a video on this. Why no thwart on the spare paddle on the back like you used to do? Thank you.
It broke! When I was running the Gauley the paddle bent so bad it isn't usable anymore. That Thwart off that paddle didn't help very much to reflip the boat because it was so far away. On this road trip I have now just mounted my gopro to the cross wise thwart and its pretty decent to capture the whole shot and it still protects the gopro when I flip upside down.
Hell yea!
Hell yeah. Your raft surfing is improving a lot. Thanks for all the videos you have been uploading recently!
Hell yeah my dude! This looks as awesome as always!
Hell yea!
Hell ya!
Hell yeah bro! Awesome looking paddle stroke!
What boat is that? Sure does surf well!
I will try to make more videos on Raft Design because this one I think is a really good design just by luck. This boat isn't made any more. It is the older 2012-2013 NRS Osprey Revolution Series URTHANE Rafts. This one was called the High 5 until that name is now given to the NRS/Star version which is ballparks different. What makes this boat run and surf so well is continuous rocker bow to stern and even rocker side to side giving the raft edges and the ability to tip it or catamaran it so its sleek and fast.
Hell yeah
Ssssaawwwweeettt view! Hell yea! I love it a lot too bro!
Hell yea bro! Looks aawweesssoommeee too!
Hell yea!
Hey you made it to gaulley! Why did you slam into that big hole sideways lol? That entrance is deceiving and it’s harder to get left that in looks huh? Love the Gaulley! Glad you made it! Woot woot from Bozeman!
I for sure messed up! I knew it was hard to get left but I didn't scout and thought I was doing just fine...my bad. I lost my angle too! I will make a video on that because loosing an angle in R1 is very difficult to regain but I can teach a couple techniques for myself and others on the lake back home. I am comfortable broaching sideways into holes because it wont turn the boat. I worry about plugging straight in because I would jump to the front of the boat and the rear would swing and flip the boat. I am sure there is a lot middle ground. This hole isn't too sticky so squaring up should have been just fine in hindsight. If I can say I knew exactly my motive in the moment of messing up my line I know that running to the right side of inertia hole goes right over a clam shell cave which I would never recommend being anywhere near the right side of inertia. But I was so I more or less froze and braced for impact. I fall right out of the boat every time when broaching holes sideways so I want to work on other techniques of highsiding but being able to stay in the raft. If your in Bozeman, I live in Helena and often time boat solo so let me know if you ever want to tackle any runs. Especially in the shoulder seasons when its hard to wrangle anyone up. Beartrap is always worth it!
Hell Yeah! 😂 That’s not a great place to jump out and go for a swim 😮 right into the pillow and over the VW! Nice recovery 🙌
Really enjoyed the recent gualley uploads. Thanks for everything David. Huge fan
Hell yeah. It is awesome to see all the work you put in. Running the Upper Gauley R1 is quite impressive.
Just curious, what’s the rigging in the front and back?
Here is video I made demonstrating why I use it and what it is! ruclips.net/video/pLDjGGbsFYc/видео.html Since a lot of people r1 the Gauley that is the only thing that people wanted to know about or to scoff about really. It was a good conversation starter for those that wanted to talk to me since I am quite the loner. It is for when the boat tips upside down...if you can imagine that...most of the boat will be out of the water or teeter tottered and so all I have to do is grab the drainholes and pull down. The one on the back is overkill and doesn't work that great anyway but it protects the gopro. Tomorrow I will be at the Charlotte Whitewater Center and I will mount my camera to the front thwart(but it will be the back thwart) and then have two of them...or just one because I have found that even just one of these thwarts sticking up near the front of the boat will cause the boat to teeter totter and make reflips way easy. I am looking forward to getting back to Montana and making videos on these concepts because I almost think it should be standard practice to have a air bulk head (attachable and removable) on the front of any raft. It essentially turns it into a "Creature Craft" its not self righting but even when getting thrown around upside down in a hole it may re-right itself which makes swimming after and re-entry way easier!
Here is video demo for the front orange thwart! ruclips.net/video/Lhzxx2EOR_4/видео.html
Hell yeah man! 👊🏻💪Great lines as always! It's always truly awesome seeing you getting to do something like this!
Great lines man! It must have been fun not being the only R1 in hundreds of miles. 😊 Hope all those southern boys and girls were watching and learning. They got to witness some straight Montana skills!! Hell yeah! 💪🏼🤙🏼🤌🏼
