It's an old Greek myth, from like 1000BC, when the Greeks didn't know any geography beyond the Hellenic islands. They met Celtic/Germanic travellers and warbands from the north, having no real idea of where they came from, mixed with the typical accounts of them all being 6 foot plus giants with red and blond hair, etc, the Greeks invented the idea of Hyperborea, a nation of homeland of these northerners, supposedly in a land to the extreme far north, since they had no idea of where most of Europe was, were the Baltics, Scandinavia, Ukraine, Russia, etc, was, they didn't know these guys were just come from like 200 miles north, where it is a lot colder and snowier, the Greeks thought they were essentially coming from the North Pole. Later the idea became mythologised and mixed into some stories with god and folklore, like the "great northern wind", because they realised the strongest and coldest winds came from the North also, adding to the mythologisation of those Northern invaders over time. The Romans inherited the idea and knew it as Ultima Thule, which just means the same thing, a nation or homeland that is located in the extreme far north. But the Romans knew a lot more geography than Greeks, and started to think it might be Britain, or some part of Germania since they didn't really know about Scandinavia but knew it was the to the north of Germania, some say Romans even knew about Iceland and thought that was Ultima Thule. The idea carried on into the medieval era, but it lost the mythological aspects since I guess people realised those "northern invaders" were just various European tribes sacking ancient Greece. In the modern day there are conflicting theories as to what and where Hyperborea actually was in the minds of ancient people. Some take the Roman geographical accounts of it being basically the North Sea or some land within, the northern-most parts of the western European continent. Some say it's surely the Finno-Baltic-Scandinavia area that is directly due north of Greece. Other says that it's in the direction of the literal meteorological north-wind that blows into Greece due to some records that the ancients believed Hyperborea was "beyond the northern wind", which if we follow it backwards is a north-westerly direction towards central Europe. One of the my favourite (because of how bad it is) crack pot theories is that of the actually word famous historian Arnold Toynbee, he wrote in his book, Mankind and Mother Earth, that because by his account the Greek rumours of a Hyperborean nation or people originated from early Hellenic colonies slightly to the east on the northern coast of Black Sea, that Hyperborea has nothing to do with the actual "Boreas", "North Wind", but that these norther invaders were actually 1000BC quote, "Chinese" people, wondering around the Eurasian Steppe. I imagine he was referencing some sort of Scythian or Eurasian steppe people, who may have some Oriental appearance or heritage, but frankly no they were not Chinese or Han people in any way, it's comical to even think, it's a huge lack of understanding of Asian or Oriental geography and ethnography, to just label any eastern people who aren't simply European as Chinese. But finally, for similar reasons, due to some of the ancient Greek accounts of how it was their eastern Black Sea colonies being raided by Hyperboreans, many Slavic and Russian historians were made the claim that it was in fact Bronze Age Slavs/Russians were inspired this myth or who/where is being referenced.
