The Africans: A Triple Heritage - Program 1: The Nature of a Continent
Dr. Ali Mazrui explains how African geography has been the mother of its history. The open eastern seabord allowed the entrance of foreign influence from the east. In fact, Islamic culture, which came from the west, made an impact on Africa 1000 years before Western culture could.
After Dr. Ali Mazrui names the three main cultural sources in Africa, traditional Africa, Islam, and the West, he states that Africa is the cradle of mankind, where the earliest human remains can be found. Thus, Africa can be called the birthplace of human culture. However, Africa never advertised itself. Traditionally, Africans tended to stay close to nature, holding dear what was near to them. Though Africans w...

The Africans: A Triple Heritage - Program 2: A Legacy of Lifestyles
Просмотров 46 тыс.8 лет назад
In this program, Dr. Ali Mazrui explores identity, family ties, tradition, and modernity. In Nigeria, a baby has three badges of identity: scars, circumcision, and a name. The African family does not differentiate between siblings and cousins, nor do it differentiate between children and nieces or nephews. Traditionally there is a strong loyalty to the old, and children spend time with the old....
The Africans: A Triple Heritage - Program 4: Tools of Exploitation

Mazrui presents European technology as arrogant and non compromising. Even if Africa has many resources, Africa also has extremes in poverty. Lord Lugar's dual mandate in Africa was to develop Africa's resources for its own benefit and to use the resources to meet Europe's industrial needs. Thus, Africans need to buy goods from other nations. The West does not share its technological knowledge ...

Dr. Ali Mazrui starts this program with an African saying, "To know who you are is the beginning of wisdom." He states that the Africans are "a people of the day before yesterday and the day after tomorrow." He notes that the Africans have been a pawn in other people's design, and they want to become players. He thinks of African-Americans as Africans as well. He states that these African-Ameri...

In this program, Mazrui shows the various cultures that are present in Africa. He shows Black Jews worshipping in Ethiopia and Yoruba divination in Nigeria. He mentions the layers of culture in Egypt as a good example of African diversity. While some see Islamic nations are not Westernized, Mazrui shows highly Westernized, highly Islamic nations. In Kenya, Mazrui sees a triple heritage of law. ...

This program starts with an erie scene of a modern ghost town in the Ivory Coast with a hospital built for President Houphet Boigny. Mazrui calls it "luxury in the midst of deprivation." The continent has "mortgaged its soul" as development has taken a distorted path. Mazrui cites three major factors for the technological delay in Africa: climate, foreign invasion, and independent Africa's poor...
The Africans: A Triple Heritage, Program 6: In Search of Stability

Mazrui looks at the history of governance in Africa. He starts with the failure of British democracy in Nigeria. The House of Parliament is silent. The political system that worked before colonization was based and rules and traditions that promoted social order and a sense of community. The Asante kingdom in Ghana continues a 400 year royal heritage where the Royal Queen Mother chooses the suc...
The Africans: A Triple Heritage - Program 5: New Conflicts

This program deals with the confrontations which exemplified Africa's mix of indigenous, Arab, and Western forces. In Kenya, white settlers reserved about 30% of Kenya's most fertile lands. The Mau-Mau's, also in Kenya, fused religion with patriotism. Jomo Kenyatta, alleged founding father of Mau-Mau was imprisoned, but survived. He led Kenya to liberation while being forgiving to the white set...
To me this should be taught in all schools. All young Africans can find themselves here . This is the best documentary has non to rival.
A friend shared this video with me because of the ideas I shared with him. Turns out these the same ideas shared in this video series, obvious of the existence of this video and no one talked about these with me, purely intuitive.
Prof. Ali Mazrui was a great scholar. Unfortunately like many African scholars, he spent most of his academic life in the west building intellectual engagement and resourcefulness amongst western communities. To date his natives lands of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu remain some of the most academically underdeveloped in Kenya. Lamu doesn't have a single diploma or degree granting public institution while there's no significant research in cultural, anthropology or philosophy taking place at any public university in the whole of coastal Kenya.
16:34 "The womb and soil together produce the next generation of society. This principle of dual virility is a recognition of how heavily Africa depends on the female of the species. According to African legend God entrusted to women three of the four elements of our material world: earth, water and fire. Women tilt the land, fetch water and cook with water. God took charge of the fourth element himself; the omnipresent air.”
Hearing who sponsored the last century branded master piece by Mazurui, My jaw drops, And knowing now who funded the documentary, all I can say is it worth all the penny for them to sponsor such demoralising out of touch narrative by one of African western educated think tank scholar the late A Mazurui, What did he illuminate, Basically what we know already, In our modern era for any who blames the west for their jaw dropping actions only mean you have read history yet you understand nothing about human quest for survival and power, I am against his paining of events because they give a young man 0 solutions and more of looking up to someone Africans take for granted has more power than you, Lives better than you, Knows more than you, As far as am concerned I can not blame who thrives to survive, If you don't like their way then get down to work, But don't tell me they have internet and we don't they have phone and we don't they have nuclear tech and we don't they have space tech and we don't, Make your own, Tanzania has Natural gas to fuel the whole of south of equator, Yet the project lucks funds, What a Joke, The whole of Africa has Energy resources to fuel manufacturing industry producing cheapest goods in the world, Has the biggest consumer market in the world, They can hedgehog in and still thrive to the maximum, So what the late mazurui basically illuminates the effects of slave trade, Its a total Joke, Are we in slavery, What we have which unfortunately I can't pen here is much worse to me than those dark years where powerful Africans literary sold their own people to Europeans, The Great Slave Trade which to date blames European only, That isn't what really took place in those inhuman years,
This is a distortion of history
A vast and intelligent scholar of African history. May his soul continue to rest in peace. Aameen
RIP. Porf. Talk about how the arabs, your arab forefathers took indegenous africans and whipped and enslaved us.
I remember my late father bringing this pod cast by then in video format, I by then was in my secondary years and I could understand his narrative very well, How vicarious I was by listening his eloquence filled with cadence and confidence, Yet, Looking back and what I have come to acknowledge without stepping on lecture room in the likes of Harvard Oxford or Mlimanin in Dar es Salaam shocks the hell out of me, His narrative which still receive funds to any of his peers convening a conference or podcast on historical account painting the unfairness to African people, Such individual win sponsorship to narrate the most demoralising narratives which distorts critical thinking on issues at hand this minute this century and beyond, I ask myself from those innocent years sitting with my late father listening to Pr, Mazurui historical account, Did his narrative improve my survival my interaction with the West or plunge me towards the gates of Hotel California. The latter makes sense to me more, The whole Triple Heritage is so poisonous to young innocent African mind like mine then and am sure it is this minute, I reserve the rest of my critics since its not cool to speak negatively of those presided us, But those who this minute still bask in his narrative and cash in big time from western sponsorship, They are indeed foreign AGENTS. They never never pin point the fact that African leaders this minute still asks permission from the west to do all ranges of issues, ''Bado tunaomba ruhusa kwa wakubwa'' Pointed Nyerere, May God forgive me but I find it very very hard to blame them, Be it we were in their shoes what do you think you personally will do given the reality of human survival where you are deprived of paramount raw materials energy and resources. No African paint the life in Europe on great depression plague famine and medieval era, These people saw HELL things which rest of the world in their wildest dream don't appear, Africa India China all were under colonisation, Yet the latter two put all their efforts on current issues to block history repetition over their skies, That makes sense to me, Triple heritage,,,, You don't find such utopia in India or China, Just listen to current African scholars such as PLO Lumumba, Ujinga ujinga Kabisa, Na ni upotofu wa young generation kwa mamilioni,
Despite the difference in, pro mazrui stands out as one of the greatest Men of our time. RIP PROF.
How are Jews equated with "Whites"? IMHO, that's an unnecessary and arbitrary act of othering.
Mr Obushe history lecturer brought me here
Just wonderful and very important to me as a Master's student in History at the University Of Nairobi, Kenya..... I've learnt alot from the video by Mazrui himself
About 30 years ago I was going to work in Ivory Coast and my work involved travelling throughout the continent of Africa. To prepare, I read Dr. Mazrui’s materials and watched this documentary series which was so helpful. From Ivory Coast I moved to South Africa before coming back to Europe. I have really loved the years I lived on the continent, there is something which pulls you towards Africa.
Yes he did
My father encouraged me to watch in the 80s. I loved it,but didn't much understand. Now I do, and unfortunately nothing much has changed in Africa since then. We are still struggling to find our identity.
Who is watching this in 2024😊😊
Assignment ooh 😢
At 43:36 background drums, beats are of BURUNDI DRUMMERS
Peace and prosperity
Ali Mazrui(1933-2014)RIP
I am nostalgic about this documentary but I tire of his promotion of Islam now as I did back then. This is not an attack on Islam but a critique on the extent to which his religious beliefs drives his narrative.
Because Islam is part of his/our culture just as Judaism, Christianity and all other religions native to the continent. But you and I are the descendants of Africa. That’s all that matters.
India vs Arabia, Indian Ocean at bay
Mumbai, Mombasa International port of global docks, sea air and land. Tik Tok...
Many years ago I watch Ali mazrui documentary, very educative but these days I just wonder
Where is Program 3: New Gods?
Anyone doing GES 210 at UP?😭
My father introduced me to the Africans a triple heritage, when i was very young. Then, I didn't understand nor care. Now i more than get it. The background music is nostalgic 😊 😊😊
Television came to Cameroon in the mid 1980s. And "The the Africans" was first aired a year or two later. And like you, I was too young too understand it. And when I watched it again in 2016 it just blew me away. Since then, I have been watching it at least twice a year. And each time it never fails to blow me away.
os afro-brasileiros precisam ter acesso a esse documentário. Alguém poderia legendá-lo, afinal, a imensa maioria de nós não conhece essa língua. Inclusive eu
Great video. I enjoyed it very much.
Who is watching due to the downfall of Ruto's Kenya in 2023.
Please be in touch with me. It’s important. Ty.
I like and enjoy Professor Ali Mazrui's lecture for its depth of knowledge, but I detest the fact that his narrative tacitly tried to undermine Christianity and to promote Islam in some way. He called the cross "detachable"; a word he couldn't have used for the crescent which he held sacred as a Muslim.
He's an islamist, what did you expect? I had to take a class of his ages ago-- what an utter piece of shit he was.
A profound statement at 45:07 "shortage of managerial and technical skills continue to leave Africa wide open to exploitation by outsiders"!
But besides watching, what can we do as individual Africans to change the narrative and make Africa better.
Great documentary. Thank you Professor Ali Mazrui may Allah forgive you.
Biafra= ethnic militancy
Great work!
It is very strange that only 3 universities in the whole of Africa gives Bachelor, Master and PhD in African studies. The University of Ghana (but it is a kind of hoax), the University of Kenya (but the first courses started in 2022 and the price was 7.000 euros per year) and the University of Johannesburg (but you need to know one local language). Now I study African studies in Istanbul. It seems that Europe and the US cares more about Africa then Africans themselves.
Wow that’s awesome
You said nothing but the truth. I have been looking for a university that'll give me a fully funded PhD in Gender studies (the African woman's perspective) there's none. Seems I'll have to undergo this important research outside the shores of the continent
35:00 they wantrf him dead
39:00 a porcupine ? What changed George Subira "money issues in black male female relationships"
36:40 beauty standards ? Consult Chinweizu "anatomy of female power" (1990)
You were referring to that beauty pageant scene in what was then Zaire.the African model's figures were very Westernized.as the late Mazrui said it was a kind of female beauty defined by outsiders(Westerners)it's not traditional African beauty standards.
23:20 clarke says we must read slave trading in the Indian ocean !!!
Th8s man never mentions the devastation that the Arabs Brought to afrika,we have information now
John Henrik Clarke remained sceptical for that reason Manu Ampin says more in his works I want to see what Blyden says about Islam
There is no triple heritage in Asia, Europe...why would afrika be a triple heritage?
exactly. its because Ali is a fan of the muslim arabs. islam is the worship of arab culture. Africa is for Africans & should worship the way of life native to it.
I saw this on PBS back in 1986.
This documentary still stand way beyond today great look and hear
Brilliant ! May the soul of this gallant son of Africa rest in eternal peace
I wondering if the women tilling the earth, fitching water, rearing the children, what are the men doing 🤔🤔🤔 besides having multiple wives, making babies and having meeting?
A more accurate perspective of the continent in Genesis 2:9-14, "8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates."
