This is a poem written by the Saudi poet Fahd Al-Musa’ed, in which he directly addresses his younger self. As he was flipping through old photos, he found a picture of himself as a child, full of joy, before he experienced the worries and bitterness of life. Here is the full text of the poem: It’s hard when you fail, and harder still to find, That those who loathe your dreams knew you’d be left behind. Yesterday, I turned the pages of my past so deep, And stopped at a picture of a child, whose voice could make me weep. What else but me? Yes, none but I, The stammering words, the trembling sighs. That was me when life was just a place, A mosque, a school of mud, and twenty homes to chase. I whispered, “This is me,” until I nearly drowned, Choking on my dreams, but fate refused to let me down. Then the voice of that child cried from within, “Where did you fall? Where have you been?” I whispered back, “I am the future you longed to see, The dreams you chased, the hopes you set free.” Yesterday, I wished for you to grow so fast, But had I known, I’d have stayed and let my soul rest at last. Had I known that time would drag me slow, And oceans without harbors would drown me in their flow. The road ahead felt long, and with each fall I swore, “This is just a stumble,” yet I kept rising, seeking more. Why do you listen and walk away? Oh, if only you had stayed, If only life had warned you, through the lessons I had paid. My dreams are lost, and sorrow is my guide, Leading me down the road where only tears abide. Oh, sorrow, if only you could fall like tears so light, But you remain, unshaken, hidden in plain sight. I once dreamed of someone to weep when I cried, Now I dream of someone to rejoice when I find pride. I thought people were just like me, with hunger, thirst, and pain, I never knew some soared above while others lived in vain. Oh, my earliest memories, take me in your embrace, Let me drift back to my father’s face. Hold me close, let me finally rest, And if you see my tears, pretend you never guessed. Wrap me in your arms, scatter my wounds apart, Shake me gently, whisper, “Stop, don’t cry-how shameful is that.” Laugh for me, tell the world who I am and from where I came, Knock on sorrow’s door, and scream my name.
