Thinning Beets In The Garden - Game Changer | What Is GROWING?
My 8 year old loves helping me with my food mill too. 😊
I love it
Do you think balsamic vinegar would taste good as a brine for these?
Hello! Yes, it would. Keep in mind that it can be stronger than the apple or white vinegar
Cute!
Do they Walk like an Egyptian? 🤣
@@JoRoBoYo yes 🤣😅
I really loved your video. I wish I had known about this process when I had my chickens. am a carnivore and love eggs. We may be going through a food shortage (I hope not) so I want to be prepared.
Thank you so much 🙂
I also hope not, but it's better to be prepared!
Looking good Sherry
Do you use the dehydrated lemons in your tea? Enquiring minds want to know 😂 What else do you use them for Sherry?
Yes! I also make and sell at Christmas time, Simmer Pot Bags that I use them in. 😀
Great info
Ok cool
OMG i just found this cool.
Thank you my friend
New to processing tomatoes. I knew about lemon juice but what about salt?
Hello! I don't add any spices until I use the sauce. Then I can add what I want for taste.
@@GardeningintheNorth thank you!
I have above ground beds because I am disabled and if I get down on the ground I can’t get up on my own with these bum legs , I am wanting these type of onions so I don’t have to buy starts as my income has dropped drastically. Thank you so much for this information
These would be perfect for you! They will do great in a raised bed and constantly give you onions you can use!
Is this the Calendula that you use for your tea?
Yes! All harvested from my garden. So many uses!
@@GardeningintheNorth that's awesome Sherry! Love it! ❤️
You were roasting peppers and onions what did you do with them did you add them to the sauce
Hello! Yes, everything was added. So yummy 😋
How do you know if the eggs you dehydrated go bad?
Hello, Watch out for discoloration. Once powdered eggs go bad, they will darken. You will notice that it is turning brownish once it is past its shelf life. The texture will also change. When it is in good condition, it is soft and powdery, similar to flour. However, if it goes bad, it will have clumps. The powder will turn sticky and inconsistent. An unpleasant smell is another indication that the powdered egg is no longer in a good condition. If it smells sour or off, discard it immediately. I hope this helps 🙂
@@GardeningintheNorththank you
Can you store your powder eggs in bags for a food saver
@@Diane-k8k I’ve never done this, but I don’t see why not. Would you store them in the freezer afterwards? Maybe do each bag with a dozen eggs to be used all at once, after opening.
I’ve never heard anybody putting them in the refrigerator after they open them. They just resealed them.
When is the right time to plant them? I’m in Kentucky 6b
Anytime! I've planted them all season.
Great video but you did not get into storage. I assume they have to be kept in refrigerator, but for how many days or weeks?
Hello! There is much debate on this. I have made these for years and keep them sealed in my pantry. I make roughly 1/2 dozen jars, and we are usually out by March. I have never had any of my jars go bad.
@@GardeningintheNorth Thank-you for quick reply. I'm in Zone 5b central Nova Scotia :-) Yes I was researching on this for 4 hours - and is a lot of recent controversy on the safety of storing homemade sundried or dehydrated tomatoes. (we don't add Sulphites or silicone dioxide). Even Purposeful Pantry only commits to a few days in fridge! Oregon Cottage has done sun dried for MANY YEARS no problems - and was put off by the new found warnings, so she did great research. She learned years ago from a old pro to dip each piece in red wine vinegar to add to acidity before putting in oil, and only add DRY herbs (like you) not fresh like we do dill pickles. I'm going to try the red wine vinegar dipping then store in fridge, and then use the used vinegar to make my pickled beets and onions 🙂
@@simplyfinancials that sounds very interesting. Maybe use a bowl and strainer to do a bunch at a time. I also dry mine out pretty good, I wonder if that also has something to with being safe. I think in the end, it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I think I saw someone put theirs in the freezer, but I would hate for them to crack. 🤔
Have you done a part 2 yet? I'm interested in growing the walking onions in my box garden 😁
Hello! I now grow these amazing onions in my raised beds and they are doing great! Checkout my garden Tours at my new property 🙂
@@GardeningintheNorth your awesome thank you!
I know you mentioned cayenne pepper earlier in the season! Lucky chickens! When do you start feeding the cayenne to them?
Hello! We can start mixing the powdered cayenne into their treat mixture anytime. We will start adding it to their feed dispenser in December, every few weeks 🙂
What are you talking about you're not going to be spooning this into your mouth eating a whole jar at a time? Lol A month ago I bought 1 jar for the first time ever and my husband literally kept eating it until our son had to hide the jar. Lol I have been wanting to make a batch but I might have to make a couple batches! 😂❤
Omg, that's funny. I only made 10 jars this round.... last year, people were asking if I had more. I used up my last jar from last year's batch back in June ☹️ so I better make another batch, lol. I'm thinking about having a small farm stand at the end of our driveway. How much did you pay for the jar and what size it was. Thank you 🙂
@@GardeningintheNorth My sister keeps telling me to have a farmstand too! I paid $6.00 for about a pint sized jar at Whitefeather Farm. We had never had Cowboy candy before. It was in sliced rings not diced like yours is. Delicious.
It was between a pint and half pint. It wasn't a mason jar.
@@greeneyedflower2408 I love white feather farm. Haven’t been there in years. You totally should have one!
I'm preserving tomatoes for cooking, but I am going to miss fresh tomatoes!!!! I eat them every single day on anything or by themselves. YUMMMMMMMM
Tell me all the ways you are preserving them! I've made salsa, sundried tomatoes, tomato soup and diced tomatoes so far. I have bags of them in the freezer waiting to be used. YUM
@@GardeningintheNorth Salsa, crushed, sauce, whole, juice and if I have alot more, I will try soup. I love the taste of my tomatoes in winter. I think it is my tastebuds, but canned (metal cans from store) tomatoes taste like metal to me. I get that metallic after taste :( Yuck. So I want mine in jars for all things yummy in the long winter months.
@@junewrogg6137 I love it!
Amazing video Sherry! Love all the types that you have grown! I think I love the two that you said would make a tasty sandwich! Thanks for sharing your journey with us!❤
Thank you ❤️ Brown sugar makes an amazingly tasty sandwich! I love that you watch gardening videos!
@@GardeningintheNorth supporting you any way I can! ❤️
I need to figure out a trellis system for next year, and up my tomato plants! Are all your tomatoes indeterminate?
Yes, you do! Yes, they are all indeterminate.
I also grow a large amount of tomato plants each year. As I say Tomatoes are the reason for the garden LOL The new to me varieties that have impressed me this year were Parks Whopper CR, Thornburgs Terracotta, and an orange cocktail tomato I can't recall the name right now. My juliette is Chocolate Cherry.
I agree! When I plan out the garden, it always starts with how many tomato plants can I grow! Thank you for sharing new tomato varieties with me, I will look them up!
Thank you for the video! I have blight on 28 of my 31 tomato plants over here in Innisfil. I will definitely try Juliette next year for eating and drying and Brown Sugar. Ananias Noir is my favorite but the blight got to my 1 plant before I could harvest. My dwarf plants in planters are still healthy and producing. I'm making a plan for next year to fight the blight. 😊
I will need to look into Ananias Noir. Thank you for mentioning it! 31 tomato plants! What varieties are they? I had to fight blossom end rot last year due to new raised beds. I made sure to keep feeding my soil this year, which really helped.
I use old lids and rings when I store empty jars
Great way to use them!
5 beans in a quart jar? I would put at least 4 ounces - or at least 20 beans per jar. Maybe even up to 25. I didn’t make that number up. It’s based on the FDA standard, which says there must be at least 3.3 ounces of vanilla beans per ounce of alcohol. I always go at least 25% over FDA standard u less I’m going with a double fold.
Wow, ive never heard of these but now that i watched yiur video im excited to start growing them❤
That's great news. I pulled all of mine this year and replanted them after I amended the bed. Now I have 8 lunch bag size bags of sliced Egyptian Walking Onions in the freezer 😋
That's awesome Sherry! ❤️
I made a batch last year! They were so hot, I couldn't eat them, I had to throw away the full batch 😔 Not sure what happened to those jalapeños but they were HOT 🔥 You're making me want to try again, unfortunately, I only got 1 lonely jalapeños lol
It does have heat. And only a lottle is needed. I wonder if you could have cut the heat by mixing it with something 🤔 you should have pickled that jalapeño 😅
Great video. Love the explanations, your timing, and that you reconstituted them. I take dehydrated raw eggs camping and my kids prefer them to real scrambled eggs. I also add some salt and garlic powder before dehydrating. Is there any problem with that? Thanks!
Thank you so much 🙂 Dehydrated eggs are for great for camping! I've never added anything to my eggs, but I can't see it being a problem since you are dehydrating them anyway. Thank you again.
Very interesting video Sherry! Thanks for sharing your talents with us! ❤️
You would love this if you enjoy some heat 😁
@@GardeningintheNorth can't take the heat anymore due to my meds! 😔
Well I was just outside this morning thinking about trying this with all my jalapenos cool. Ok now i know what I'm doing tomorrow morning Woohoo. Great video and thanks for sharing Sherry.
Yes! Make this recipe, it's so good. I also pickled some and still have more on the plants. Such good producers. Have a great day.
Do you think it would turn out the same if you tossed the jalapenos into a food processor? I grew 5 kinds of hot peppers this year; all in the same heat range as jalapenos, and am thinking of mixing them to make cowboy candy. Different colours to make it more interesting.
Hello! Yes, you can use any type of pepper. Sometimes, people will do a combination of bell and jalapeños in an effort to keep the heat down. I used red and green peppers and didn't love the colour it turned out. I was really hoping they would have shown the red and green for xmas gifts. I wonder if it would have been better colour wise with white vinegar 🤔 I am interested in hearing how yours turn out!
I would have liked if you could have added herbs to the sauce? Maybe this was just how to process, but I don't have the tomato press, so I need to just do old fashion way. Thank you.
Thank you for watching my friend! If you don't have a press, how do you remove the seeds? I leave them in for my tomato soup, I have an emersion blender I use.
@@GardeningintheNorth I have an emerson blender and I squeeze them into a strainer so I get the juice and the seeds don't get thru. Time consuming.
@@PatMcGuriman I think I know what you use. We have something like that for making apple sauce. Yes, very time consuming.
What variety of grapes are you growing? Are they seedless by any chance?
Hello! Yes, they are seedless. I'm away for the weekend, but I believe the the red grapes are Concord and the green ones are Niagara. I'm hoping to dehydrate them for raisins
Your gardens also ways amaze me wow. Everything looks so nice , look at your tomatoes So happy for you. thanks for sharing your gardens videos. be safe and see you on the next video
Thank you, my friend. You are always so kind. Happy Gardening 🙂
Love the idea of growing tomatoes over a trellis!! Your garden is looking great!!
Thank you ❤️
Your tomato plants never cease to amaze me! You definitely have your words cut out for the next couple of days! Thanks for the tour? ❤️
Thank you for always watching ❤️
LOVE these plants! I grow them literally between rocks with sprinkle of dirt around them. ALSO my favorite plants to look at and have used them as a subject in my paintings. They are the first plants to show up in my Nova Scotia garden. I was given a few of these plants 10 years ago and continue to give the bulbs away when I can. I like that I can pick a few bulbs to use for making a tuna or egg sandwich without chopping into the bigger typical onions. I do not PULL out the mother plants but snip the recent growth with the new bulbs dangling and within days new growth starts to happen on the mother bulb still in the ground. They are the ever-ready plant that no critters nor bug desire to eat them. Thanks for a great video I can pass around to those who get the bulb abundance give way every year!
@@Minazillionaire I AGREE with everything you’ve said my fellow Canadian gardener. I have planted roughly 100 of these at the new property and they are doing amazing without any TLC. Once I get a great many going I hope to start sharing them again. Thank you 😊
Anise Hyssop and Catmint are my bee magnets! They seem to love herbs the most.. my oregano and mints are blooming and the bees love them too!
I agree with you! I can't go near the basil without seeing bees buzzing around!
Look at all those tomatoes ♥️♥️♥️ so envious 😊
Tomato rich ❤️
How are your walking onions doing??? Trying to find some to plant...I want the same kind as yours..they look so prolific!!!
Hello! They did amazing! I normally pull them and replant every 2 years so that I can slice up the bulbs and freeze them, but because my beds were new and I wanted to amend them, I decided to pull and replqnt this year. The new ones are already coming up. Do you live in Canada? If these new ones produce the little bulbs this fall, I will have some to share.
Can you plant them next to garlic? Running out of space.

I don’t find my anise hyssop to spread/self seed. It comes back every spring and mostly behaves in its space.. might need support as it gets taller and windy conditions. I’m going to harvest and dry some of mine today as well, for tea. I’ve currently got 2 mints, lemon verbena, lemon balm, sage and stevia air drying. A few herbs more to harvest and dry still!
Thank you! That's great to know. I was thinking about planting it in 2 locations very near to my garden, in order to bring more pollinators in. I absolutely love lemon balm! I may also say that about many of the herbs I grow 🤣 Happy Gardening
