Each song represented different time periods. Mariah structured the songs/vocals relative to the time periods she had them in which you picked up in The Wind. It was based off a 1920's jazz instrumental. Emotions was base off the emerging House Music Trend of the 90's. And You Don't Remember was a nod to old Motown. If It's Over was written with Carol King who wrote Natural Woman for Aretha Franklin. That's just a few, but Mariah had a lot of photo shoots that depicted the different time periods as well. One of the reasons most people think Mariah's Xmas jam is a cover is because she structured the song how they used to do it in the 1960's. Mariah's a songwriter, but if you'll look a little closer, you'll notice she's also a producer.

Mariah spent the 90's breaking records and creating new ones. Her cover of I'll Be There was a new one. She was the first pop star to sing on MTV's Unplugged and sang in front of critics. It's customary to add a cover to the setlist, so Mariah chose this and sang with her back up singer Trey. The critics praised the concert and this surprise cover so much that the public wanted to hear it ahead of release, so Dj's began playing clips, then the whole audio of the track. It got so many spins it began charting on the hot 100. Mariah and her label were looking at each other like wtf? Since the public loved it so much, they sent out an official audio and released it as a single. The public made it #1, so they released the EP, and then the tape. MTV played it live for 2 months instead of 1 due to the demand. This success out of nowhere is what caused the label to demand Mariah go full on girl next door and make adult contemporary music which they felt the cover represented.

I don't know if someone else already said it, but in this era, Mariah asked to have more control, and they let her, but the label also wanted to make her know that they were the ones controling her success and they actually interfere to stop Can't let go to reach the top. The next album, Music Box, was an absolute success, but Mariah was a prisoner in her own house and then Daydream and Butterfly happened.

She has an EP titled When The World Stopped Moving (2021) that I think you'd like because it is just her and her guitar/piano playing these songs acoustically. It's all live too, if I'm remembering correctly, so if you like a more stripped down sound from Lizzy, I think you'd like it. Awesome video!

Few notes- I loved that you said her production must have had a better budget on this album, because LOADS of money was put in for her first album by the record company, whereas this one she co produced herself 😂 so that was a nice compliment you gave her haha. Secondly, the debut was kinda marketed as “white girl who sounds black” with some more “white” pop & rock style songs on there, whereas this one she steered in more of a “black” direction herself, infusing soul, gospel, motown, blues & jazz. I always feel like the album cover is a subtle way of her telling people she was half black and half white. This album is the lowest selling of her big 90s albums run, but has kinda become a cult fan favourite as a result. She hits her lightest highs and darkest lows on this one, hence the title, Emotions 💛 Thanks for reacting! You’ll be listening to her biggest selling lot of albums coming up!!

Songs were definitely longer in 91 lol. Can’t Let Go and Make it Happen both had shorter radio edits, that ran more like 4 minutes if I remember correctly. Emotions is very underrated in Mariah’s catalog IMO. They moved on from it rather quickly, promo wise.

I think the mashup of the music form Monica’s angel of mine and the chorus and of Britney Spears Lucky is genius!!!
