They can't upload the vocal video of this?
During this time CBS soaps were starting to be synonymous with “Mother’s and Grandmothers soap network” due to their longevity on the network. ABC soaps such as OLTL, GH and Dark Shadows started to appeal to and attracted younger kids and college viewers.
OLTL was so groundbreaking back then. It was the first soap to feature a bi-racial character in Carla
I really wish I could see oltl actual scenes from 68 to before the buchanans b/c I'd love to see that & I've never seen victor lord before his onscreen death or the arrival or Dorian let alone Carla gray 's groundbreaking story that started oltl & got it going. It's very sad somehow the buchanans somehow took over & never let go. No other family could ever knock thos family out & they were able to destroy every original family ! Even the woleks who were dominating the show but I guess w/ judith licht leaving she wanted to move on & prob saw the show was going dallas
Natalie ps, the Buchanans did not do that. The writers did that and the actors themselves did that when they left. In the 90s, the Buchanans were not the main focus so why didn't the writers bring these families back in the 90s and 2000s instead of adding new families like the Fords, Mcbains and the Mannings and others?
Natalie ps, that's not why Judith Light left. It had nothing to do with the Buchanans.
The Buchananas did not destroy any families. That's not true.
The show changed after Agnes Nixon sold it to ABC in 1973 or 1974.
The Bunchanan family pushed the Wolek's, the Craig's, the Hall's and the Siegel's right out the door. I could not stand Asa, Clint or Beau.
@Goldensoaps I would like to know if you take requests.
Great video. Too bad you ruined it with the writing on the screen.
There was also a controversy about Light Skinned Blacks/Dark Skinned Blacks. The Light Skinned ones mix more with the White Characters where The Dark Skinned Blacks play thugs or prostitutes. In The UK The Fair Skinned Blacks are almost always Bi Racial and The Dark Skinned Blacks are usually from Jamaica as seen on Eastenders. However Blacks on UK Soaps really didn't take off until 1985 when Eastenders Debuted. It's the most PC/EO Soap in the sense that in it's 36 year History it's continously employed Black & Indian (Hindu/Muslim) Actors.
Oh wow
Great scenes
I loved Clara s storyline and the actress who played her mom was amazing.
Ellen Holly, b 1931
@@thegodblogger3812 Lillian Hayman played Clara/Carla's mom.
@@marcelparker6755 Yeah, I was speaking.of Carla
This must’ve been the first episode that the now Vicky is has started
No. The first scene was with the first Viki....Gillian Spencer. The 2nd scene is Erika when she gave birth to Kevin in 1976. She started on the show in 1971.
The first episode was in July, 1971, the slate said October.
Ellen Holly looked a lot like Sylvia Sidney
Thanks for the upload.. XD
Why did they kill off Brian if he was a Lord? I hate it when a member related to a core family is killed off and especially when they come back from the dead. Brian would have been great future story potential for OLTL.
I thought he came back from the dead or was that another character on OLTL? You know how these soaps go on steroids with the switched at birth, mistaken identity or imposter storylines, lol!!
They killed him off for the drama it caused. Also when the secret came out One Life to Live and GH were just beginning the one hour format. They wanted to start it off with a bang Im sure. The story is incredible! It had me on the edge of my seat! In a good soap "plot armor" should be limited IMO. If the audience is secure that certain characters cant die then the shock factor is limited. Brian's death was a major shock to me. The cool part is that I'm the same age as Stephen Austin who played Brian lol.
if you care to read her autobiography: one life, an actress out come from passing g color and diversity. you'll be amazed how well this woman had turning heads for lots of us as if we could see through every mirror and say : I'm m here! thank you ms. Holly!🌺💮🏵️🌹🌸💐
the most influential woman I search through my days. she will never be replaced. if i could , cut very door down through hatred and diversity with some dignity and positive introspect. lord, thank god for ms. holly's strength and I'm the one who can help her script about hernia Christophe, ling of Haiti. she had knocked down boundaries. just to avoid to pass for white but she's often to take the biggest step is to be black, rich, thought and human. god gave her a praise to be true. and that's why she's my mother for an upcoming queen like me. thank you ms. Holly.
Wow
I was watching the OLTL Vienna storyline with David and Jenny and Richard Abbot interviewed Dorian Lord regarding American Spies and mentioned Paul Kendall. What did Dorian do to Paul? Inquiring mind wants to know.
They should have shown Brian in the afterlife when Viki "died" in '87......
Not Diane Bristol who fell out Dorian's window ?? Xd
@@MrCraigblaze Diane had nothing to do with Vicki. No connection.
@@travisjames3517 Yes I know that ..I was just saying ..But her death did shock me..
Trivia note: apparently the fireplace used for the title sequence was the Collinwood fireplace from "Dark Shadows"! Since they were on the same network, the cameras taped the fire from the DS set!
The fireplace was used in the opening because the original title was supposed to be Between Heaven and Hell
During a tour of The Red Zone (a 1980s/1990s club in Manhattan and the former home of “Dark Shadows” and “Ryan’s Hope“), Nick Besink (who worked as a video operator on DS) told me that the “flames opening” for OLTL was filmed in the DS studio.
And then they got some of their writers and actors ❤️
that looks like gillian spencer playing viki to me!
it was, and for some reason, near the end of this video, is Erika Slezak - who didn't come on as Vickie until 1971 (following Joanne Dorian, who replaced Gillian Spencer - and bore more of a resemblance than ES).......)
Wow, beyond rare!
I remembered this episode when it first aired
That was a long time ago
The TITAN yes it was I started watching from the beginning to the end
@@artkitchen4072 How? it has 11000 episodes
this was when OLTL was at its best! Loved all these characters....Sadly, the arrival of the Buchanons buried this group of characters.
I sometimes wonder would the show have been better without the Buchanan completely taking over.
@@jacktheman2895 Buchanan was good acting family.
No the arrival of a Racist man named Paul Rauch is the reason why a lot of the characters were let go.
I love the buchanans.
@@mrob75 , I think those people might of been before my time. So I don't know any of them. But I think I read somewhere that the popularity of the Buchanans saved the show from cancellation back in 1979.
Goldensoaps: Do you have any other clips from this storyline?
Yes! I have some more
I would love to see the old ones with Lee Patterson as Joe Kevin and Joey real dad cause he was and still is my favorite actor
There are some late 70s episodes with Joe Riley.
Thanks so much for posting. I started watching right around this time.
Where did you find color video from 1969 of the show?
Is there any way to get full episodes from the beginning of the series? Only came in on the last 10 years or so & loved it...
@@AbleInTruth Judith Light gave a good performance as Karen Wolek from 1977-1983
Robert Milli also played Adam Thorpe, Roger Thorpe's father on Guiding Light.
Carla did admit who she really is when she fell in love with Price Trainer a doctor at the hospital, she broke up with him and married Ed Hall a police detective, when he left the show she fell for Jack a lawyer.
Ed didn't leave the show. Carla cheated on him; which is how they ended up divorcing. I can't remember if she cheated on him with Jack or someone else. But I know she ended up marrying (and then divorcing Jack). And then SHE left town for a while; and then came back having received her law degree.
Are there any episodes like this with the vocals? Thank you so much.
This was an instrumental written by my friend (the late) Charlie Paul. There were never any words to my knowledge. Jack Urbont’s theme had words that were sung by George Reinholt (as Tony Lord) in one of the episodes. Dave Grusin’s theme had words that were sung by Peabo Bryson in one of the episodes, and then later used, at times, during the opening and closing billboards.
@@Soapluvva I think Brian Henson meant dialogue, meaning relating to the actors, not the music.
@@themirrorsofmymind Here's an old episode with dialogue: ruclips.net/video/iMRY5WE2WN0/видео.html The Paley Center in Manhattan and Beverly Hills has some old episodes with dialogue. One of the old episodes is an unedited tape of the famous one where Karen Wolek (played by Judith Light) revealed herself as a prostitute on the witness stand.
@@themirrorsofmymind The Paley Center for Media in New York City has the color episode from Monday, October 28, 1968. Here is the synopsis from the Paley Center's website: "In this episode, Joe tells Anna about his feelings for her, which go beyond the boundaries of friendship. Meredith has left the hospital but nobody knows where she has gone. Nurse Martin is the only person who saw Meredith leave, and Larry is concerned since he and Meredith are supposed to be getting married tomorrow. Dr. Craig tells Dr. Trainor about a patient, Carla, who has been receiving outside treatment. Craig wants Trainor to assist him with Carla but he is unaware that Trainor is attracted to her as well."
what I'd do to have and episode to see what the original Viki was like.
It was an excellent soap. I loved Gillian Spencer as the original Viki. And you should have seen her play Niki Smith. Erika Slezak was never as good as Gillian IMO. Gillian was also great playing with Lee Patterson.
I think Erika was overrated.
Yes I agree with you Brooke, Gillian Spencer who was the original Victoria played the role of her alter ego Niki Smith much better
I agree. Gillian played an awesome Niki Smith like Erika never did. Gillian Spencer just had an edge to her.
@@AbleInTruth Antony Ponzini (Vince Wolek) was not Lee Patterson's (Joe Riley) younger brother. He was the younger brother of Anna Wolek (later Anna Craig) and the older brother of Larry Wolek.
I wish they would put OLTL (from the beginning on RUclips).
Ruby Chew I know I wish they would do it too or antenna TV or Me-TV
The problem with this is the ABC erased the tapes from 1968-like around 1976 or so. So OLTL during that time is a no go. Very few clips have circulated because someone had copies of the masters. Ellen Holly has copies actually but she said they need to be transferred to another form of technology in order to be shown. Like put to DVD format.
I agree. We need this great show back, new episodes and the old ones too.
@@1990758 I would buy them if they were put on DVD or Amazon video. Dark Shadows was put on Netflix. Why can't OLTL have the same honor!
i would kill for OLtL from the beginning [or, as far back as they go], but not those disgraceful on-line episodes. what was with all the expletives, ffs?! most people in my life do not swear past d@mn & h€ll [although i hear & say worse, tbh]. the thing is, this was not only unnecessary, but actually distracting. it was like a swearing contest. it cheapened the quality of the show, & made the writers & actors sound simple.
Claras Story was Controversial During this time. Reminiscent Of The Movie Imitation of Life.
Jeffrey J. The original, "Imitation of Life," movie was in the 1930's. The one from 1956, was a well-known remake, actually!
@@deejoshua7352 1959
wow, that's Clara, I would like to see her whole story line
+belinda mcdowell back in those days, no one could have anticipated how popular and sought-after these old shows would later be; then again, soaps were treated more like stepchildren more than anything - though they brought in more revenue than prime time ever could have (at least in those days)..a pity they practiced 'wiping' and reusing tapes after a show aired..SOAPnet might still be around if they hadn't... and alothough OLTL was considered a more 'progressive' soap in those days, they copped out when it came to the marriage between Jim Craig and Carla Benari/Clara Grey..Robert Milli was the first Jim Craig, and was later replaced with nat Polen..it was during that time the engagement was broken..NO WAY was anyone going to allow such a 'mixed marriage' on daytime telly...
Danny Hill, how silly of them to wipe those tapes, sad all the way around.
belinda mcdowell yea, so much for being a visionary...
@@dannyhill8797 It really wasn't believed things like Bewitched or Gilligan's Island would be shown over half a century later and counting. Leave It To Beaver never received a single Emmy nomination. That was why Bewitched virtually redid many early episodes with Aunt Clara later on, plot-wise, with Esmerelda. The amazing thing is Dark Shadows was kept in its near entirety, while none of these others were. This is the same deal with Doctor Who in the UK. I think now it is less than 100 episodes missing, but something about they are finding them in transfers or something when they aired in other countries or what. I don't suppose that could be the case with these soaps tho. Ah, well.
Pretty sure OLTL, and all of the ABC serials of that time, we’re never broadcast live, always live to tape (Dark Shadows) or tape delayed.
