Road to Rolex $100 watch challenge episode 1
Excellent video 👏. The CEO of Breitling just announced that Universal and this model specifically, will be their high end brand, above Breitling. I have just landed two extremely rare watches like yours, with the slim movement and designed by Genta, way pricier than you have suggested but they are worth it.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Universal Geneve are great watches.
Collect watches to appreciate watches not because their value will appreciate. Rolex are not rare and overly supplied but many newbie watch investors still believe in the myth.
I still can’t believe how many people got on the “watch investment” train during the pandemic. Some watches have always held their value well. But treating them like investments is unwise.
My friend, you are spot on with every one of your observations. Most people don’t really care what you’ve got on your wrist. This is why I will reiterate, buy a watch because you like the way it looks and the way it makes you feel. Whether people notice or approve is totally irrelevant - even if it is a clone.
I can’t really endorse clone watches since that treads on some shady IP theft. But there’s are plenty of great watches out there for every style in every budget.
What a Debbie Downer this guy is.
Excellent! Thanks for speaking the truth! Please make another video on what we should look for, brands and models you suggest, etc.
I will add that to the list. I’ve been busy and struggling with new video ideas. But I have one that’s almost ready.
Very thorough.
Thank you, I wanted to make getting into watch collecting easier for people.
Very wisely said!
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I’m a woman and a watch enthusiast…. So I experience the other: men don’t care 😊
I appreciate the insight. It’s great to see women enjoying a passion for watches too. At the end of the day I suppose a watch just looks like any other watch to everyone who doesn’t participate in the hobby.
Men into watches sure do notice. But most men don't, that's for sure
The first thing I look at when I meet a woman is if she's wearing a watch and if so what kind.
Nice infos again!!
Glad you enjoyed
Nice comment on the Walkman brand. New info! Thanks!
It’s surprising how many sister brands of Swiss watch makers were set up to get around import tariffs.
@ hahaa, financials drive a lot of action, fortunately and unfortunately.
It's impossible to determine watch brand even from 1m distance despite a watch is really well-known and recognizable. You have to put you watch right in front of someone's nose so that he can reсognize logo. So yeah, no one cares about your watch.
For the most part I think that’s true. But there are definitely some watches that collectors and experts can spot from across a room. But certainly not the average person
Good advice. I recognize the things you say, even though I have been collecting for approx 35 years now.
Wow 35 years of collecting, I bet you’ve come across some amazing pieces through the years.
First question nowadays is: What does it cost.
When talking to a watch person for sure.
Nice video! As a Rolex ( datejust) owner I should add that maintenance is costly and may be needed every few years even if the piece is working properly
An official service gets costly but there are still independent watchmakers who are certified in servicing different brands like Rolex. Rolex will charge around $1,500 -$3,000 for a service. Meanwhile my local watchmaker only charges around $200 - $300
Yes, I never notice a person’s watch and if I did that person might get a little nervous.
If I notice a specific watch I’ll sometimes make a comment like “nice watch” to test and see if they are at all interested in talking watches. I find that people with less well known brands are usually more excited to talk about them.
Nice Hamilton. Haven't seen it before!
Thank you, Hamilton is one of my favorite brands
Nice to hear you’re into Goodyear welt
It’s more or less the gold standard for a lot of footwear.
No one cares what watch you wear except you. So as the man says, take your time. Buy what you like. Enjoy life.AMZWATCH
Exactly 👍
You forgot exclusive and expensive watch, brand name is Ball watch, official standard, railroad. Another's Japanese watches are Orient and Alba good quality watches
Ball does make decent watches as well. I unfortunately couldn’t cover every brand there is since the video would have been hours long then.
Best watch video ever!
Thank you! I appreciate your support and kind words!
Accurate on points 1, 2, 3...actually all of them!!!!
Love your channel with so many stellar watches! For me the AMZWATCH’ watch is my favorite. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

love the brutal honesty, subscribed
I’m glad you enjoyed it. We try to be as direct as possible. Too many channels are run by salesmen hyping things up unrealistically.
Yep! All true 👍
Thanks, your support is appreciated!
Proud owner of the omega speedmaster day date. That said, I've wanted it since I was a teenager.
The Speedmaster is an amazing watch, well done. I’m still kicking myself for not buying a pre-owned speedy I came across for a grand 5 years ago.
@the_vintage_reserve I just have one concern. The specs say its power reserve is 44 hours, but I have to wind it quite often. Is it because of the complications or did I get a replica or a fake one? I bought it from a reputable company.
Impossible to say without having an expert open up the case. Even reputable resellers do slip up now and then but if they are reputable will rectify the issue if they did. Are you winding it up all the way?
@@the_vintage_reserve I'm not sure. Good question.
#11. The only thing worse than a fake rolex, is a real one
There are definitely many valid criticisms for the brand. But they do make good watches.
Na you’re reaching
What an amazing outcome for a beautiful watch. Always a pleasure to see AMZWATCH work your magic. Thanks for sharing this transformation with us!

Great video! Subscribed
Thank you, I really appreciate your support!
Nice video. Keep producing and sharing.
Thank you for the support!
Good points Most women prefer quartz- it’s easier
To be fair so do I some days. Mechanical watches really aren’t the practical choice.
I appreciate such a thorough and detailed video on this watch. I am in the market for one soon but prices are absolutely all over the place. Same for the White Shadow unfortunately!
I’m glad you found it helpful. The prices are all over the place but usually come down to condition. You can pick up a fairly beat up non-black dial Polerouter with bumper movement for a few hundred. But for a micro-rotor in great condition you’ll be pressed to find them under $2,000 unfortunately. But in good condition it’s one of the best options for getting into vintage watches.
Agree about the watch bug. I like setting a limit of max watches. 3 to 6 is a good number. Anymore more than that, you’re not able to wear and appreciate most of your pieces. Also people should slow down and only buy 1 piece every couple of years so you only buy what you really love. Tastes change over time, and it’s nice to buy them as an occasional pleasure rather than a shopping addiction.
Tastes do change, and many end up thinking they will love a watch but once they’ve had it on the wrist for a few weeks and the honeymoon phase has ended they realize they don’t love it. That’s why it’s so important to try on and even spend some time with a watch before purchase, which is easier said than done. It’s why collector groups are great, everyone gets to experience a wide variety of watches without burning cash.
Setting a limit is something I read often. Setting limitations is not something I would advice unless you’re prone to addiction or hurding or can’t control yourself. I own about 50 watches after approx 35 years of collecting and I am happy with that.
I currently collect casios after collecting more expensive ones.
Casio makes some great watches for sure, they dominate the digital watch world (excluding smart watches).
Love this. I wish they made one with Chansey
A nurse Joy themed one with Chansey would be great.
I noticed you were in a Value Village. Are you in Toronto? I’m a watch collector in Toronto and was wondering how much you got the Rolex for? I really like your vintage Omega
I got the Rolex off a collector I know for wholesale price. He was selling it and knew I’d been wanting one.
Are you in Toronto?
No I’m in the US.
Looks like you have close to a 20K watch collection. Some nice pieces in that box. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the support
Paintings are not first? =)
Paintings hadn’t crossed my mind. I agree they probably do contend for some. But just like real estate, luxury art seems to be bought for investment more than truly collected. I think a collector needs to have a passion that comes before profit.
Excellent video with many fine points for watch collectors at all stages of this hobby. Having experienced and being the current owner of multiple Swiss and German watches, I am somewhat of a counter example, though, to your point on budget watches. I love experiencing different watches for their history, styling, fit, etc, but, I find it difficult to continue to justify spending thousands of dollars on Swiss and German watches that will most likely depreciate in value, when I can get a similar experience from a less expensive watch (lower cost does not always equal lower quality) selling for well under $500 and offering a similar style. This and the fact that I don’t need to be as concerned with losing the watch, or damaging the watch, or servicing the watch. What I have found also is that when I do come across a truly special budget watch that is styled after a pricier model then I am more likely to be motivated to save for that pricier model, but if the budget model is a dud in my eyes then I know that the pricier model most likely is not for me. At any rate, I love watches, I love watch collecting, and I love this video. Well done.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I greatly appreciate the support. The great thing about watch collecting is it’s personal and different for every collector. And something I didn’t mention but that rings true quite often is that watch collecting is a journey. And through that journey people and their interests change and develop over time. As long as you collect responsibly and your collection brings you joy, you’re doing it right!
Is that one redial?
No it’s an original dial. It was just kept in a drawer for decades so it’s in really good condition.
Looks great. Unbelievable deal for $300
I definitely got lucky. I love having it in the collection.
This is one of the best videos in the hobby. Well done, and thanks for the great work🖤
Thank you for the kind words and support!
Good video, agree with all

Those shoes are Italian everywhere but in Italy.
I believe they have different manufacturers, many of the Bally shoes I own were manufactured in Switzerland.
The Polerouter is a lovely piece of design and a real classic, but I do wonder why it gets so much attention relative to so many other classic vintage models from other brands (e.g. Longines, IWC, Girard Perregaux etc). I guess it's the Genta thing? (In reposnse to which you could equally ask why Genta gets so much attention relative to some other designers.. ;-)). But there are even other Genta designs that get far less attention, such as the original Omega c-case Constellation.
You bring up some excellent points. The Polerouter I think definitely gets some attention because of its connection with Genta. But also the relatively uncommon design of the bullseye/sector dial. They really catch the eye and you don’t come across them often. But also to your point there are other brands that made watches that look very similar, like Longines (which is personally one of my favorite brands for vintage pieces). I don’t remember the Polerouter being as prominent as it is currently until Hodinkee published their article. I don’t know how true it is but there was a rumor going around that Hodinkee had stocked up on the polerouters before their article and then released them on the market right after. So perhaps the focus on the Polerouter is completely fabricated for the purposes of marketing. It would almost make sense, since it’s odd the Polerouter gets more attention than their significantly more impressive chronographs.
I like using a chopstick as a pointer.
Is it that obvious? My other option was a paint brush.
Thanks. Helpful.
Im glad you found it helpful!
Good video but you missed Orient in the budget tear
Orient is another great brand. The list of brands was just already too long for an introduction video and I couldn’t cover everything. I wished I could have included Rado, Nomos, Glashutte Original, Baume & Mercier, Montblanc, Frédérique Constant, De Bethune, Chopard, Piaget, Zodiac, Bell & Ross, Ebel, Ball, Doxa, Fortis, Urwerk, MB&F, and Gerard Perregaux too.
@@the_vintage_reserve Mido also a great brand
Forget about all other fake brand, you just need to buy a Rolex. Here's what you need to know when it comes to Rolex: >I got the Rolex I actully wanted tier: GMT-Master II, Daytona, Day-Date >I like these enough to not bother with wait lists tier: Submariner, Sea-Dweller, DateJust >At least it's not entry-level tier: Explorer II, Yacht-Master 42, DeepSea, Air-King, Sky-Dweller >I been scrimping and saving for years tier: Explorer, OP >I don't know what I'm doing tier: 1908
There’s nothing wrong with a Rolex. I chose it as my first luxury watch purchase. But there’s so many brands out there better than Rolex. My most recent video actually goes over quite a few of them.
Keep up the saving. If your not interested in anything else but Rolex's may as well not bother watching any videos on different brands or movements. I know I'm not interested in hearing about the watches you'll never afford or obtain.
Actually very informative and useful. Was a great watch!
Thank you for your support! I’m glad you found the video helpful.
Great video. I believe the Seiko with integrated bracelet needs a battery change, that's why the seconds hand moves like that.
Great observation. That Seiko is actually a kinetic, so it charges its battery with a rotor inside. It doesn’t have a normal battery that you can easily replace. It’s running like that because it’s low on charge and needs to be worn for a bit so the rotor can spin and charge up the battery. The solar watches do the same when they’re low on charge, the seconds hand ticks only every few seconds to save on energy.
@@the_vintage_reserve Right, it's a kinetic but I thought it could be a battery (capacitor) replacement related issue anyway. Very nice collection you have, that German diver is beautiful.
