    What do you think of the Assimil book? Do you recommend it. Or do you prefer the Le Francais Par Le Methode Nature?

    • @AdamYLM
      @AdamYLM 7 дней назад

      Both of these books have their own places. I recommend both of these books, but they need to be used at the right time to benefit better. Let me add a third book so things get more clear for you. 1 - When a person is new to language, A1 level. Then books like Teach Yourself or Hugo 3 months series etc will work best. They explain things a lot and at that stage, you need it. 2 - When a person reaches good A2 level, then Assimil book will work great and will help go to B1 level. 3 - In order to get better at B1 level and go above, we need to ditch translations and focus content more and more in French language, for that we will use Le Francais Par Le Methode Nature. Short summery, both are great resources, but should be used at the right time. And I used both of them.

      @AdamYLM I have watched a few of your videos, and I must say that you go above and beyond in your videos and explanations. My daughter and I are beginners in french. I'm trying to teach her, which is challenging when I am a beginner myself. I will get the beginner books you mentioned and start with those. We also read kids' french books, and we watch French Facile on RUclips he speaks very slowly and has dual subtitles. I have started to learn french to help my daughter as she is learning French in school. The last time I learnt french was in high school. Thanks again for your thorough explanation.

      Since you are at A1 level, my suggestion would be to get Assimil French with ease book, and once you reach lesson 14, start doing Pimsleur also with it as side resource. Do both together and at the end of Assimil, you will be at strong A2 level and since you have used Pimsleur, you will be able to talk also pretty good.

    Hi Adam, good job! German native, English in kindergarten from the age of 4. In highschool Formal teaching in highschool, 8y British English, 6y Latin, 3y Russian, 1y French. MSc electronics -> IT 20 computer languages ;-) After high school 2y Spanish. 2y Chinese. In my late years Basque, self taught. I do not consider myself as a polyglot, because most of the languages I seldom used. I feel more as a person being fascinated by and laughing languages. Respect for your judgement of Duolingo. I did German Spanish up to level 5 midway, Diamond league in 10 weeks without paying! and English Spanish to Level 4 midway. My view: Spanish could include European Spanish words, once in a while, German has bad grammar, bad style, and strange word order

    • @ernstkrudl4895
      @ernstkrudl4895 Месяц назад

      ctd. US English is very poor with no finesse of word or style. Remebering the old times, when the discussion forums were still around, which have been removed now. But the level of German has not improved, the errors not removed, Duolingo supports all the languages prejudices Europeans may have about US. Yes and all the useless sentences, you mentioned. The US English that is used is often so poor, that I often understood the Spanish beforehand, trying to work out the US English. Travelled US for 6 weeks, never had trouble to understand or be understood. .And all these childish reminders to continue learning, calling me babe etc. sounds retarded to me. My grandchildren will soon be in high school and I will pay them if necessary, if they do not use Duolingo. ;-) Language transfer Spanish I like very much, because of my Latin and English background, I understand all the side remarks, but also the Old Greek hints. I watched the course once, also did the non recommended, wrote the whole course down, identifying "all" the rules, and now the 3rd walk through, looking even more closly, and watch for some rules poping up in my brain considering my German, or other languages. One of my big benefits is with new Spanish words in texts/videos related to English/French/German automatically show themselves now. Memrise I still use, Videos and the word training, the repeating of "learned" word, very easy, no nonense talk in between. The AI dialogues are weak. For one they insist on topics I am not interested in, or have no experience in, so I find it stupid to answer, such dialogues can be broken only by being rude, unfortunately. Also if I ask the AI a counter question, it sometimes confuses its role and thinks it is me. Alltogether at my age 72 I follow my own language learning ways - a mi manera. And in Europe I can go so many different countries to learn easily. One of the ways I learn is youtube, 100, 200, 250, 300 ... 600 sentences of a language, I do the English Basque and the Spanish Basque tandems. When hiking in the hills the audios, at home als going through my self made notes, vovering one language column and "guessing" the other, repeating without instant memory necessity works well, Basque and Spanish one must switch often in the Basque country, so that prepares the brain to do so with ease. Good luck to you.

    What do you recommend after primsleur ? Is lingoda sprint good?

    • @AdamYLM
      @AdamYLM 2 месяца назад

      So pimsleur is a speaking course. If you are using this course, your goal should be to learn speaking the language, not learning overall language. Do only the first 3 levels of pimsluer, then start talking to people online for free. Or use teacher from Italki etc if you wish to invest so money. For overall learning, 1 - Get a basic starter course. Like Teach Yourself French or a video course. If already done. 2 - Get Assimil with ease series book. If already done. 3 - Start reading in new language and watch videos that your can understand at your level. And keep increasing reading and video difficulty level with time. Regarding Lingoda, never used it myself so can't really say much about it. See if you can find a non paid review of Lingoda, then decide from there.

      Learning a language properly in 3 months is not possible from zero, unless you know a similar language to it. But here is what you can do and this is what 3 months of hard work will take you to: 1 - Start with Paul noble audio course, 30 mins new topic, 30 mins revising what you listened to yesterday. So thats 1 hour for Paul noble. 2 - Pimsleur course each day from level 1. so that's another + 30 mins. 3 - Teach yourself French book. 1 hour each day. 4 - After you finish Teach yourself book, get a phrase book and start watching French videos designed for new learners on RUclips. All this is 2 hours 30 mins of study everyday. If you can add more time listening to podcasts etc, then its even more better. After 3 months, it will enable you just enough to barely speak and find ways to talk to French people. It will be difficult, but it will be far better than your brain not able to process French at all.

      1 - Paul noble - Grammar based course for starting a new language. If you are 100% new, its amazing course, very easy to understand for new learners. If you are even at A2 level in language, you won't find Paul noble very useful. 2 - Pimsleur - Designed for speaking practice alone and improve pronounciation. But if you don't know basics of language, you might not be able to use this course depending on what language this is. 3 - Which is better? - Both are different things, Paul noble is a beginner grammar teaching course to get you started in language. Pimsleur is a speaking course, its to get you start speaking. Both are not the same.

    Very good review. I worked through this book. Though it was easy for me, I still learned some things. I'm currently halfway through Using French, but that won't get you to the C1 level either. I have Assimil's C1 courses for German and Russian, but the French is quite advanced, so I'm going to have to do some extensive reading in French for the vocabulary. I've been working through Assimil's B2 Italian course and it's been helping me out greatly. Still, knowing other Romance languages helps. Even so, there are words in Italian you simply don't see in closely related languages.

      From everything I have done over many languages, I found podcasts the best. But like everything else, there are different kind of podcasts. Here are ones for French for example: 1 - You are very new to the language, then this kind of podcasts will help. They first say things in French only, then after that, they break down entire podcast, sentence by sentence. Repeat podcasts as many times needed until you can fully understand 100%. ruclips.net/video/VQNb1MEp7T4/видео.html 2 - But you need to change your content as time passes, right now I am intermediate level so this is what I listen to. ruclips.net/video/2afwvUMFnsU/видео.html With all that said, I only listen to podcasts when I am driving or doing some work. Nothing beats reading when it comes to acquiring vocabulary.

    Thank you for the extremely helpful and accurate review. I am half way through the Assimil French and have found pretty much everything you said to be true. I have studied for about a year and find this book perfect for me now. A true beginner would be totally lost and frustated with this book. Would love to see a review of the advanced assimil French perfectionnement.

      Thank you for kind words. Reason I haven't touched that book is because its for those people who want to go from B2 level to C1. Right now I am at B1 level and if I study that book right now, it will overwhelm me. I have two advance books that I will be using, first one is Hugo advanced French, then I will be using Assimil. But before that, first I need to go to B2 level.

    Michel Thomas did have courses called Advance before. It changed to Perfect, then changed again to Intermediate. The same as there used to be Speak X Language Beginner's Course, then it became Total Course, and changed again into Foundation Course. The Michel Thomas company for some reason or another change the name, when they repackage the exact same courses.

      @AdamYLM 9 месяцев назад

      Oh wow, didn't know that. But if thats the case, then I have seen an old course of Micheal Thomas. I guess it was called Advanced course and thats where it got into my memory. It was very long time ago so cannot correctly remember. That person said really good stuff about MT courses. Though French was the first language for which I tried it.

  • @alanguages

    French is one language where the pronunciation is extremely important. It isn't as forgiving as other languages for intelligibility. It is better to start with something to hear native speakers from the start like Pimsleur and Paul Noble. With that said, do you intend to review Pimsleur French 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, +?

    • @AdamYLM
      @AdamYLM 9 месяцев назад

      Yes, also in terms of understanding spoken French, I realized even native speakers are having trouble understanding each other. I always thought English accents were bad, French just takes it to another level. Regarding Pimsluer, yes, I am at level 5 right now, once its over, I will be making its detailed review.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 9 месяцев назад

      Looking forward to it. I enjoy Pimsleur with the immediate conversational level attained. There are two European languages, I have heard native speakers will immediately switch to English, if the non-native speaker's pronunciation is not up to standard to make it intelligible. That is French and Icelandic.@@AdamYLM

      Its hard because its not standardized, this makes too many variations of the language. New learners will get their heads rolled when they start speaking as everyone speaks it differently. The version I speak is heavily influenced by English and Urdu. So you can see traces of those langs too in it.

    Hi Adam, like your video, both your content on French in language transfer, and how you generally describe a good approach starting from different levels. Presently in LT Spanish on audio 87 of 90. My pre experience, 50 years ago 6 years of Latin and 40 years ago 2 years of Spanish, but never used it much. So from this perspective I would definitely recommend it also for an A2 level, because it will strenghten the basics, its an experience in every lesson, wonderful connections to remember so easily. Yes, For Spanish I also use Duolingo, I am in generall Level 3 now, sublevel 2. LT and DUO, a wonderfull pair. Duolingo I hope to go to the end, but I will probably not repeat it, LT Spanish I will definitely take a 2nd round at least. Then who knows, go to Spain hopefully again. What languages do you speak? My native is German, but have been exposed to English since the age of 4, so its kind of 2nd nature. All the Best!

    • @AdamYLM
      @AdamYLM Год назад

      In terms of spoken ability, I can speak 5 langs in 2023 but still learning more. I used different gamified apps like Duolingo entire year, the time when I was making this video. It was the first time I was using apps for language learning. I used mostly Babble, Duolingo and another one which I forgot the name. But I don't think I will ever use another gamified app again. They were helping me learn, but the amount of time I spent on using these apps, there are far better ways to spend that time learning languages. I found books, video courses and audio courses way more effective than these gamified apps. But if a person enjoys apps, then sure, he can use it. Language learning is a long journey so enjoyment is a very important part to consider.

    In my previous post I stated that my first day doing this program was very positive, and I thought it would take 2 more days to finish, I would then do it all over again, and then provide my opinion. As it happens, I finished the course on day 2, and while I still have positive views of this course they are not as positive as they were after day 1. What he covers, he does well, but there was far too much repetition, even allowing for the fact that we want some degree of repetition in order to remember and reinforce concepts - but this was ridiculous, the 8 hours could easily have been reduced to 5 hours with no loss of real content. Which leads me to my other issue - there is so much more he could have done with that time to make this a really great course. He could have taught all the pronouns - direct, indirect, and tonic which he only partly does in both courses, he could have covered prepositions in great depth, he could have greatly expanded on the future tense instead of spending the entire time on the past tense, he could have introduced different moods like passive voice and subjunctive. All of these things are concepts that I have encountered and have had to learn in the 2.5 months that I have been studying French - so these are not beyond the scope of what one might expect in an "intermediate" level program. Instead of that, however, he chose to just repeat the same phrases and concepts over and over again, so that was a little disappointing. If he does come out with a new course, I do not think it will be "Advanced French", he left out far too much to cover at the Intermediate level that needs to be learned by any student of French. So is it worthwhile? Yes, it is, I did learn from this course and I am glad to have purchased it, but I am a bit disappointed because it could have been much better than it is. Yesterday after completing about 40% I would have rated it 10/10, today after completing the whole thing I give it 7/10.

    I started this course today, I am about 1/3 through it. I did the Beginner course, and I have a pretty good understanding of the basics- I've been learning French on my own for about 2.5 months, I probably have 150-200 hours of learning in and I have watched many RUclips videos about all aspects of the language, especially grammar. I have some knowledge of all the tenses, conjugations, moods, pronouns, etc...., and I think this is important in order to get the most out of this course. What this course does the best is that it teaches you the subtle differences in the phrases and conjugations between the various tenses so that you can recognize them when you hear them, and then of course utiize yourself in spoken French. This course is particularly effective because it is an AUDIO book, so you are training your ear to recognize all these things without using visual clues, which of course is crucial for understanding spoken French and it gives you a very different perspective about how all these thing fit together. For example, you will quickly realize that a verb conjugated in the Imparfait sounds just like the verb in the infinitive, which sounds just like the past participle of the verb in the Passe Compose. Therefore, you learn to recognize what you are hearing in spoken French, and what to listen for that tells you what tense you are in (and sometimes it can be very subtle). If like me you have a theoretical knowledge of these concepts but have not had much experience using them , then I believe this course will help to provide a very good foundation to build fluency. It will probably take another couple of days to get through the course, then I will repeat it and provide another impression after I am done. At this point I highly recommend it.

    I just did the course - your review is very accurate. I had already studied French for a few months before starting this course so I was familiar with Passe Compose, pronouns, and basic grammar so I was able to understand what Paul Noble was doing. Very good advice you give to have some basic knowledge before starting this course because then everything he is doing makes sense. As you said, the vocabulary in this course is limited with a focus on English words in French. Based on my experience with this course I will be doing the Intermediate course also.
