Oh No! It's DEVO on the Sega Genesis! (Time Out for Fun) (YM2612 + SN76489)
Furnace Module: archive.org/download/test7_202310/TIMEOUT4.fur
This was originally meant to be an instrumental cover only, but I ended up adding the vocals from the original song because it felt empty without it.
Yes, you can export the song to a VGM file, but there a few problems. The file gets large (like 900 kilobytes) and the vocals might cause a clicking noise on the DAC, but there doesn't seem to be any problems as far as I can tell.

Kraftwerk - "The Man Machine" | Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Cover | YM2612 + SN76489

The Mean Bean Machine Download: archive.org/download/test7_202310/ManMachine.dmf I actually made this cover 5 years ago, but didn't release. Recently, I went back to it and tried to "fix" as much I could. It's decent enough. Though, I wasn't able to replicate some of the synths and at minute 1:25 it gets a bit weird. It works in Furnace Tracker but some stuff might not work. Why? Well, it's a D...

DX-Ball - Song E (AdLib Cover) | Oscilloscope View
Просмотров 520Год назад
This song was originally composed by Frederic Hahn in the late 80s for the french demo/cracking group Ackerlight. The original version was composed using Protracker. DX-Ball shipped with various midi songs from different sources, including a midi version of this song that was used as the high score theme. The midi version was also used in the song "Супер Алиса - ЭВМ". The visuals were created w...

In case your wondering, the .fur module is 1730 bytes in size, though it gets considerably bigger if it gets exported as a vgm file. It could be smaller (maybe). The visuals were created with corrscope and foobar2000 with the VGM Input Plugin (For channel isolation). Download: archive.org/download/empty_202304

In a nutshell: It's basically FM + SSG-EG + SN7 Noise + lots of trial and error. I'll suggest you to download the .fur file in the description and open it in Furnace tracker, It's a bit more clear whats going on when you mute noise channel

Looking at the wave of that first instrument is so fascinating. When I first heard it as a kid I thought it sounded like "the future," a sound that only electrons could make. It really is a very complex and unnatural type of wave shape, but still so elegant.

The original has a slow and subtle change in the sound you mapped to channel 3. I know this would be a pain to write, but that would make this 99% the original thing (and probably it will be marked by copyright checks, and that would prevent us to enjoy it).

Y'all do know, MIDI is an art unto itself, right? ...And, lesser quality MIDI is usually (purposefully) used for various reasons? This is like, a 9/10, I'd say. I'm not qualified to judge, cos I don't know the system like that. I do know how to MIDI, like a pro.

Genesis' sound chips are really good, but unfortunately they were so misused, since there is a lot of games with poor and muffled sound quality, specially with games available for other consoles. Yuzo Koshiro was one of the composers that made a really good use of this Yamaha chips.

It would be a nice thing to know how much commands the IC accepts to make it speak through the FM channels modulating.

It's actually not that difficult, I'm just changing the values of multipliers of the individual operators as the envelope is playing. (if you want to see how the song is put together, download the file in the description and open it with Deflemask tracker ) The FM Bass isn't actually saying any words, is just sounds "close enough". There's actually a game for MS-DOS called KGB/Conspiracy that simulates speech by doing something similar.

The tools to get there just didn't exist back then. I programmed commercial games in that era and you pretty much typed numbers and prayed the 2612 sounded like something. (Yamaha's actual synths weren't any better, which is why every 80s song had DX-7 presets but no programmed sounds). Modern VSTs like Plogue's chipSynth MD have a much better interface for creating sounds.

    • @stevenclark2188

@@ischmidt I think the theory is: if you do some Fourier analysis of a real instrument and happen to be a living god of trigonometric identities you can just calculate what the multiplier needs to be.
