    Did you ever consider the 1DX mk1? I have both and for me the 1DX blows this out of the water when light aint great and the shots are far cleaner/sharper. 1DX downside is its only 18 meg, wgere the D90 shines is the 32.5 sensor and pretty good in decent lighting and a fps almost as quick as the 1DX.

      Yes i did. but loving the what i have at the moment. I've been shooting sports this summer and so many people comment that my images are tack sharp. And as you say the sensor works so well for many reasons.

    I just bought a new 90D and it’s a big upgrade from my 40D in many ways. The luxury of being able to crop and ‘throw away’ pixels will be a novelty. Regarding weight, it is noticeably smaller and lighter than the 40D which is built to survive the apocalypse. I didn’t go mirrorless because I am reluctant to lose the immediacy of the OVF and live view means it has a foot on both camps, all my lenses fit and the whole feature package seems better value than the R line. Money talks and in this case it said get the 90D.

      I've been shooting sports with an R6 mk 2 owner who also does wildlife like me and he honestly said that except for it being quiet there not allot in it, to the point where he uses his 90D more.

  • @havisfin4562
    @havisfin4562 7 месяцев назад

    One correction to your facts: 90d has two 4K modes, uncropped and cropped. So you can get uncropped 4K video, using whole APS-C sensor area. I have had 90D for several years now, and just love it. Without batterygrip it feels a bit too small in my hands. That's why I have batterygrip on all the time. 90D has one of the best grip ergonomics of all Canon line up. Mirrorless Canon bodies and lenses are great quality, but prices are out of any regular dude's budget, and adapter makes EF lenses feel bulky.

    Thanks for a really good straight forward honest and to the point video. I'm thinking of this camera as an upgrade on my Nikon P950 that I bought solely for the big zoom as wildlife photography is really all I'm interested in. Am I right in thinking that weather sealing on the d90 is also another massive plus?, or do you still have to put it away in wet weather?

    Why manual on a walkabout? Seems to me that of a bird or animal were to flush suddenly as a cloud passed over you would miss it while adjusting exposure. On a walkabout I want to instantly be ready for anything by having either aperture priority (usually wide open which automatically gives me the fastest shutter speed possible at the chosen ISO, or better yet, auto ISO ( or possibly FLV on Canon) on the newer cameras. Then, as I walk in and out of the shade, or clouds pass overhead, or clear, I am ready for anything in an instant. Compensation, if needed for a dark or bright background, is quick and easy with one dial.

    I understand the pros with carbon fiber though I can’t justify the investment in carbon fiber because I am not a working professional photographer. I did have a Silk U-212 about 35 years until my ex wife decided to keep it. So replacing my old Silk with this new 700DX Pro will be a great investment.

For birds hand held I keep my shutter speed at 1/2000 and f/8 auto iso. Get plenty of sharp images when paired with my canon 80d and same amount of soft shots 😉 It’s an affordable setup.

    I have exactly the same camera and lens. I did buy the dock with mine and I have updated the firmware. I watched a few video's about the lens and they showed a focus discrepancy where the camera thinks it is focused but in fact it is slightly out from where it thinks it is. You can use the dock and Sigma software to correct this but it's a huge lengthy process. My lens doesn't seem to suffer with this so I didn't bother. I have done some minor wildlife photography with the lens and I've also done quite a bit at Duxford of fast moving planes. I tried with a tripod but just could get on with that what with the angles required etc. So I tend to shoot hand held and most (not all) of the photos are tact sharp. It definitely worth the money. The only reason that I will upgrade to the RF system will be for the video capabilities. I really struggle trying to video from the back screen. I really need an EVF.

    I've had mine for 2 yrs . For the money it's the cheapest 600mm zoom lense on the market . When it works it works when it goes fubar . it's a pain . It is a flawed lense ..and if you customise it after a period of time it falters . Also don't expect any updates at all because there is NONE . At times it feels i wasted 40 quid on the Usb dock . And the lense is prone to Soft shots bigtime i lost a few because of it ..when using to capture Yachts . Also the PLACEMENT OF THE tripod collar offers zero stability to the lense .. And i've watched a multitude of reviews which they never have the decency to say . Your the only one to mention that it's too short but stop short of mentioning the crap placement of the collar .. The vibration / shake is sooo bad at times when i tighten the tripod mount the target ends up moving out of the crosshairs . It's annoying as chuff tbf ..

    After my experience with the Eos 80d and 90d then the mirrorless Canon R System, I see the 90d definitely as a very capable camera for bird photography, for wildlife I had quiet often the situation where the crop factor annoyed me, for birds its a benefit in getting you closer to the subject BUT if someone is on budget looking specially for an APS-C Body then I would recommend the 80d for the price value, if money is not a big issue I ll go with the R7 over 90d

    • @marcusgrantphotography

    The 90D is a beast - that 32.4 Mpixel equates to an 80 Mpixel full frame - this was my main camera for a couple years before I switched to the R5 - so many features in the FF Canon Cameras that the 90D doesn't have - and if you don't have them, you don't know what you're missing. But, once you find those you'll never look back. have fun with your new 90D, that's the most important thing anyways.

  • @juliust.5650
    @juliust.5650 Год назад

    Love my 90D! One of the cons, which is also a pro, is the sensor's pixel density. Quite simply it will show you just how good or poor of a quality lens you have on it. A 32.5mp crop sensor is possibly beyond reason. When you pixel peep or just simply look at your images at 100% size, which really is pixel peeping for this camera, you'll notice that your images seem to be softer than they should be. And well, they are.. This camera is very demanding of the glass you put in front of it. Lenses have a resolving power, and unless you invest in high quality glass, the 90D's sensor will show you just how poor your lens can actually resolve detail. This is why full frame sensors look much sharper than high megapixel crop sensors. Many lenses simply cannot resolve detail down to a single pixel on this camera, so at 100% without processing your images will be a bit soft. Thankfully though, the minor softness you'll see from non-high end glass is easily fixed either through processing or simply downscaling a little bit. So, this really isn't much, if at all, a con.. But, if you cannot afford high quality glass, it's not much of a pro for you either. And also, if you're having trouble obtaining tack sharp focus, it's quite possible that your lens just doesn't have the resolving power required for this sensor. Here's a link to a video that talks about this: ruclips.net/video/bIvgoThiufI/видео.html And, I'm sure there's others too. Before I learned about lens resolving power I was pulling out my hair trying to get tack sharp focus to the point of micro-adjusting focus. Since learning about it, I was simply in awe of the power and potential of the 90D and had a much better appreciation of lenses.

    I agree with you. There are more capable (mirrorless) cameras on the market, but a new and improved model is usually released every three or four years - it's called consumerism. The Canon 90D is not the best at any single thing, but it is a really good all-around camera. I couldn't be happier with mine.

      Hi Personally i us manual setting with auto ISO, normally F8, that seems to work well for this lens., then adjust the shutter speed accordingly, i.e. bird in flight etc. BUT, this can be quite daunting for those with basic knowledge. My advice would be to have a play with Aperture priority, on auto iso, and take a few shots with various F stops to see what the camera is doing, like how much is is blurring the background, for birds portraits you can keep the lens wide open. Can i ask are your shots dark on the camera screen or when you review on a computer?

    Hi Marcus. Regarding your comment on highlights burning out somewhat on occasions, have you tried using the "Highlight Tone Priority D+" setting? For those that aren't sure where to find it, this can be found in the shoot menu (the camera icon in the menus). I have two 90Ds and my main subjects are wildlife, primarily birds. I tend to leave this setting enabled in both C1 + C2 custom settings, just turning it off on the occasions when whites don't really figure in the subject. I have also found that I get better results with the 90D using 1/4000th sec shutter speed wherever possible (for wildlife). Any real increase in noise due to higher ISO, which I leave on auto, is negligible and, like you, I find that Topaz programs handle this brilliantly. Getting the shot is priority! I have used Canon since the EOS 300 film camera, progressing through the 300D, 500D, 70 + 80D and now the 90Ds. My preference for the APS-C sensor is the 1.6x crop, which is what I consider to be an advantage for wildlife shots, effectively giving greater reach, and, with the 32.5MP sensor, cropping is no problem at all. I also use a Sigma 150-600 C as you, and a Canon 100-400 EF-L MkII. I don't need a full frame camera and really don't see me going mirrorless anytime soon. Keep up the videos. All the best - Ken.

      Thanks for the comment Ken. I agree with the higher shutter speed for sure. Thanks for the tip on Highlight tone priority D+.

    Absolutely wonderful pictures of the Marsh Harrier. Great job! I've been to Otmoor a few times but I always really struggle due to the vast distances of the fields which aren't accessible. You've done a superb job there. Fantastic, well done!

      Thanks very much. Its a double edge sword really, lack of big accessibility and facilities does keep the numbers down, but then some cannot go. Loos are a big one lol.

    I've got a R5 and I'm thinking about going back to the 90d I don't think the picture quality of the R5 is up to scratch.

      I have heard a few people say that. I was out with mine today. Got a bit if video with it, too. For the price, it's a good bit of kit.

    Good Choice going for the Canon 90D (keeping it in the DSLR range)! I couldn't see myself going mirrorless as I still feel like its not yet 'WHOLE' if that makes sense, the cost was also a deterrent for myself but it's also not been in the market for that long too (especially for Canon), so I went and got a used Canon 5D Mark IV and LOVE IT! The price was great ($1800 CAD) as it has been out for a while and it performs so much better than my original kit, so I'm going to stick with DSLR for at least the next 5 years.

      @@marcusgrantphotography I was lucky enough to buy and sell a lot of my old photo equipment, bikes, etc. for some profit over the pandemic, plus a couple print sales ended up getting me well over the amount I needed! So I was lucky in that regard 😄 Also I really love your content!

    I like the fact you were honest that you couldn't afford to go Mirrorless .. as can i . I can't justify .. the money .. when the good lenses are just insanely priced .. I find it astonishing how none of the Gear Channels ever question why Canon .. don't include include a FREE Adapter . So folks can still use there EF Lenses tho i've read some 3rd party lenses don't work with RF Camera's I bought a 90D 2nd hand because i got fed up having to continually changing lenses wasting time .. as my subject matter covers a wide range .. I never stick to single target . I could use one LRT's and the other for Macro / LS etc . Mind you I still can't afford any of the Expensive EF Lenses ie the 600,500,400 variants though i missed out on a 2nd hand EF500 . I noticed you also have the Sigma 150-600c .. I've had mind since 2021 ... at first . it was doing the job .. as time went by . I began to notice it's flaws and badly placed Tripod mount worse thing ever on a tripod . shakes vibrates everytime you lock/focus on to a target . 95% Of my moon captures are never dead center because of the mount/collar ..offers zero stability to the lense .

      Thanks for your thought, greatly appreciate other peoples experiences. I have got an extender foot on mine and this works a treat, there is a guy on Etsy who make them. I had issues when i first got it, but turning off stabilisation whilst on the tripod did the trick. I also use a gimble on my main tripod.
