I remember in my teenage years being charmed by the 'Capriol Suite' when I came across it by chance on a record I'd bought . . . and then buying a transcription for piano so I could look in particular at the beautiful 'Pieds-en-l'air' . . . and play it on the organ! Your performance on this magnificent organ is just gorgeous, Ben. A Christmas treat: bravo! Being a Frederick Delius fan, this dance movement, with its distinctive 'English Pastoral' style, very much reminds me of the harmonic language in a Delius soundscape. Warlock cleverly succeeded in drawing from dancing melodies composed in the sixteenth century and then placing them in the context of the harmonic language of the early years of the twentieth century in a way that was fresh, yet still honouring the customs and style of Elizabethan music. You can see why it was Warlock's most popular composition as this suite of dances is a pure delight, full of contrast, terpsichorean energy, and - despite his troubled life - imbued with heartfelt musical sentiment. The inspiration for the Suite came from tunes found in 'Orchésographie', a manual of Renaissance dances by the French priest, Jehan Tabourot (pen name: Thoinot Arbeau - an anagram). However, the treatment of the source material is very free. Warlock's biographer, Cecil Gray, wrote: "if one compares these tunes with what the composer has made of them, it will be seen that to all intents and purposes it can be regarded as an original work." While other movements are named after the derived dance, 'Pieds-en-l'air' is named after the dancers’ instruction. The dancers’ feet should move so gently that they 'barely touch the floor' (and best not to look into any possible innuendo with the title . . . ).

Interesting piece (modern, but not too modern!) by a great organ teacher who had a profound influence on organ education. Many of us are taught by those he taught. Beautifully played, as always, with unobtrusively skill - a delight to see as well as hear.

What a stunning composition and a most worthy addition to help fill in the gaps left by Bach in his own ‘Orgelbüchlein’. The piece sparkles on the Father Willis Organ at Lincoln in this gorgeous performance: bravo, Ben!

Its unfair to limit the number of one's favourite Bach organ works to just ten! As the greatest organ composer of all time - Reger, Messiaen, etc a long way behind! - there are dozens of masterpieces to choose from! The top 50 would do Bach greater justice!

I would include Bach's Prelude and Fugue in B minor and Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Dorian!

I bought the CD a while ago. I love it and play it often. There is rep there I have never heard before. It’s a real treat: go buy folks! The presentation by Buckfast Abbey’s label is top notch too! Have a very Happy Christmas Ben!

What a magnificent packaging presentation in which to ensconce (underused word) a silvery shiny disc that has captured within its protective but ecologically unfriendly plastic coating pure Bloor bliss playing a fabulous organ in a beautiful building with a gorgeous acoustic. This piece was my gateway drug to more modern organ music. Before I listened to Alain, I regarded most 20th century organ music with disgust. It really is a beautiful piece. Thank you!

Composed in 1934, first performed in 1938 and published in 1939, this composition is seen as one of Alain's seminal organ works. You capture all the mystery and exotic atmosphere of the music perfectly, Ben, with your beautiful registration choices . . . and how wonderful to hear the Cathedral bells at the end (fortuitous timing!). I've seen the piece described as a feat of cross-cultural legerdemain! Ostensibly a dreamy evocation of Babylon and the 1,001 Nights, as you remark Alain builds his composition upon a great structure of the European Baroque: the chaconne. Slow, soft, and remote, the work begins its four-bar ostinato not in the bass as expected, but in a very high register. (In keeping with the image of a suspended garden, no truly low notes tether the composition to the Earth!) A commentator has noted amusingly how part of the melody seems to be a slow-motion version of "All the girls in France do the hoochie-coochie dance" - though this may simply be an unfortunate coincidence! Bravo!
