PHA Food & Farming Campaign
Добавлен 18 фев 2016
The PHA Food & Farming campaign is in a struggle to protect the Philippi Horticulture Area- PHA. This 3000ha urban agricultural area is a unique-in-world food producing area located in the heart of the working class neighbourhood, the Cape Flats. The PHA produces 150 000 tonnes/ annum of vegetables and flowers, is the off-set for thousands/month of livestock for religious, cultural and economic activities on the Cape Flats, and is a vital agricultural area in the city's food system. The PHA is also the last remaining above ground catchment area for the critically important Cape Flats Aquifer. PHA farmers extract water from the aquifer for their irrigation needs and the aquifer can potentially supply the city with 30% of it's potable water needs. The PHA is under threat from urban development, silica sand mining and poor city decision makers.

Farm Soil the Natural Solution for Organic Waste
The City of Cape Town generates 1.5m tons of food and biodegradable waste (organic waste) every year. The majority of this OW end up at landfills where it emits 10% of the city's green house gas emissions. All of this waste can be composted and used as organic fertilizer on farm soils in the Philippi Horticultural Area, for urban micro farms, community food gardens, household food gardens, school food gardens, Early Childhood Centres and home gardens. Organic waste composted and used on farm soils restores the nutrient cycle, sequesters carbon and helps combat climate change. Soil is the natural solution for organic waste.

Is die Aquifer.

Die jong mense vannie Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) came together to celebrate our living, breathing aquifer. The aquifer is a large body of water in the soil of the PHA foodland and is made visible by farm sprinklers, in farm sloot, in the area's winter wetlands. In the city the aquifer is in the food we eat. Soon aquifer water will flow from taps across the city. Special mense, special pl...
Aquifer Festival

Life Above, Aquifer Below. In the Philippi Horticultural Area aquifer water magically transforms into carrots, caulis and cabbages that sustain the city. In December 2021, the PHA Campaign in association with its partners Heinrich Boll Stiftung, Natural Justice and the Cape Cultural Collective, held an aquifer festival. Lots fun was had with music, poetry, paintings and fynbos plantings to cele...

Friday 16 October 2020 is the sacred day of Jumah for Muslims. The day also coincides with World Food Day. Farmer and activist Nazeer Sonday share the story of food, hunger and climate change and how the Muslim tradition addresses these challenges. Nazeer calls for a deeper understanding of the food system- from farm to plate- and for citizens to go beyond food charity.

PHA - Cape Town's droughproof farmlands

The Philippi Horticultural Area is a unique ecosystem - situated above a natural aquifer that provides water to the farmlands, which in turn protects and recharges the aquifer, allowing water to filter down into the underground system. The PHA is the green lungs of the city. Blessed with an unrivalled micro-climate, productive soils and abundant water, the 3 000ha PHA is irreplaceable. For over...

Desalination is too expensive for citizens, a burden on the fiscus, has negative consequences for our coastal marine ecology, does not have the natural nutrients of fresh water. The PHA Campaign support localised sources of new water including aquifer extraction with Managed Aquifer Recharge, recycling our waste water and regenerative agricultural practice that is water-wise. The PHA farmlands ...

What happened about this?
Greatings from Berlin. Keep fighting!!!

Thank you to all of you who have donated generously, especially Solly, Zohra Nur Foundation who got us off to a great started with 400 foodbaskets. May the almighty shower all of you with tons of blessings IA🤲🏽 ameen. About the target: when we started this food drive in response to the Covid-19 lockdown, the PHA Campaign worked from a 2013 DAG study of 9 informal settlements in the farmlands with a total of 1550 families. Since then families have grown and we also included more smaller settlements and farm labour tenants. Today the target is 1800. Help us reach our target. We concerned that many households will go into debt to pay for food, children will go hungry and more will depend on a few to survive. We confident we will give some relief to all the food vulnerable families in the PHA farmlands. Please spread the word and donate generously as those who volunteer their time to pack and distribute the food💚🥕
Even the smallest piece of green open land is worth preserving and this piece of farm land is priceless and of particular value to all the people of the Western Cape. Do not let mindless, short sighted people destroy this incredible natural asset. Lets all fight back against development and concrete and needless destruction of the environment
Resist the Babylon system protect the god given soil and water, protect the people that work the land with their hands. God speed
PROTECT THIS AREA PEOPLE PLANET OVER PROFIT | MORE GREEN LESS CONCRETE
Behind you all the way!
The Aquifer also supports all sorts of birdlife, remove the surface water by installing canals to dry out the land for development and those birds have only Rondevlei left. This is what happened to Ottery when they put in canals, the surface water was washed down the canals and ends ultimately in the sea. The old Regional Services Council used to cover the PHA and protected the area from land misuse when people started unauthorised businesses in the area. Now places like Schaapkraal is home to people who have no intention of sticking to the original zoning and run businesses from them. Slowly but surely the PHA is being encroached upon, it’s so sad to witness this real time. Informal housing and also the lack of sewerage in these camps further pollutes the Aquifer. People are amazed when they rediscover old wells under Cape Town CBD, perhaps in a 100 years’ time when our generations are all dead someone will suddenly realise that all the fresh water to farm with is below our feet under tons of concrete, paving and roads and the farming land further inland does not have a free perennial water source and mediterranean climate that allows you to farm vegetables all year round.
May this court case be a success for the organic farming dream and safeguarding our precious aquifer.
Who could possibly shower under 1 minute? We must tediously save water while our government corrupts the entire nation. Incompetence and greed make filthy bed fellows, it's no wonder we have infrastructure failure on all levels. We're in the worst drought in many generations yet our counsels are not prepared to implement sustainable agricultural methods and responsible water regeneration techniques in symbiosis with nature but totally ready destroy Horticultural areas and aquifers around our city, such as the Cape Flats Aquifer, just to rezone it for low income residential infill housing and a mall which could have numerous alternative sights. Our government is purposefully sabotaging our country, no one could be this ignorant.
This area needs to be protected at all cost! one can ask the question who will be benefiting financially from this development enough with mall development too.
This is amazing! this area needs to be protected at all cost to the nearest" hell" with mall development you have to ask who will benefit financially from this mall Respect to you Nazeer for the amazing work you do!
