Great race to watch, David. Too bad about the end, but these things happen. And I have to agree with you, the MX5 is much more enjoyable to drive than the M2. By the way, the Porsche Cup is at Road Atlanta this week as well and since you already know the track, you might try a race with that combo. The gears used in corners are about the same (fixed setup), I noticed. The brake points are not, though.
I was hoping to get the lead but it just wasnt to be. I will check out the Porsche Cup today and see how I get on.
@@pitbitsDavidGerardWell, I just won my first race in the Porsche Cup 🎉. Mind you, it was split 4 of 5, but I'm still happy.
Well done Arthur, they are hard to drive, was it wet too?
@@pitbitsDavidGerardFortunately the fixed series is dry this week. Had a good start and was 3rd after the first turn (started 6th). At the end of lap one the guy in 2nd went into the pits to serve a black flag and a couple of laps later the guy in 1st parked his car into the wall, so all in all I had some luck.
Death, taxes, and Pitbits uploads at midnight!
I will be going back to 3 times a week in the new year. I just did one a day every day for December......i can't keep up with that schedule when I'm back at work full time. I would love to do this full time instead of my current job, but I think that will have to wait for a little while longer :)
Hi David , may I know which overlay are you using ? Thank you
HI, I use www.simhubdash.com/ and then dowloaded these as add ons www.simhubdash.com/community-2/dashboard-templates/romainrobs-collection/
@ Thank you David , appreciated
It's often the way, taken out by another car that is not your fault. Just have to keep on keeping on. See you next time.
I try not to get too upset, i've made my fair share of mistakes and hit other drivers. It's not deliberate and none of us are trying to ruin others people's races (apart from one or two idiots).
The answer should always be yes.
It can turn the result of a race if getting through traffic is one of your strengths
@ @ @ But never at the expense of the slower classes. How many times do you see faster cars taking out slower cars in IMSA, WEC, and ELMS without penalty? This one of the major factors in mixed class racing, but iRacing doesn’t have a way to penalize the idiots the way they should be.
@@pitbitsDavidGerard BTW Daniel Morad @Moradness has a couple of most excellent videos explaining how both the slower and faster classes should race so as not to come into contact with each other in IMSA and iRacing.
Great to see you firing up a track right down from my house to kick off the stream at Talladega!
I really enjoy the super speedways, just disappointing I managed to lose the draft, it's much more sensitive than I was expecting.
I'm sending it like that until iRacing makes it "illegal"... The only time I didn't there were cars coming from the back of the field, full throttle and I was in P4 before T1. No thanks.
Yes, if I dont go then I guess the heroes at the back of the field can come through instead
When I raced in a league ( V.O.R) we had a 75 minute race every Monday night. rFactor back then. 40 drivers per race. The server was open for practice all week. It was usually full. Great video.
I used to do this in an ACC league. I spend all week practising which was good fun when others were practising at the same time. The only issue was that I found most of my time was hot-lapping and working on set up, we not much racing. Also, if I was taken out early on in the end of week race i felt like wasted my whole week.
I'm not sure anymore when something is considered a send or a divebomb. Is there any difference between them? Maybe we should call them sending divebombers ;-). Anyway, he absolutely should have realized that you would never expect this action, so at best this was a very optimistic move of him. The only thing you could have done is claim the corner earlier, but as I said, you had no reason to expect this move. So why compromise your entry, right? Personally, if I see an action like this coming, i just leave him the corner. Needed to do this several times in my race at Le Mans this week.
HI Arthur, I could have given more space but as you say that would have compromised my entry, and he was coming from a very long way back. I think if we had been nose to tail for several laps then I would have expected it more, but half way round the first lap is a bit optamistic.....
As far as I know this is not jumping the start. As you were on pole you are the one who decides when to start. As long as you don't overtake the pacecar before it enters the pitlane. Others have to stay behind you untill it is green.
I'm not 100% sure if I am correct, but details are in the sporting code, in paragraph 6.8.2.
Yes I just read that, i'm not 100% clear either.....
That's what I thought but no one else went with me so it felt like I had too much of an advantage....
@@pitbitsDavidGerardEverybody has to stay behind the person they qualified behind untill it is green. So everyone was probably just focusing on the person in front of them, while the person directly behind you was sleeping. In any case, you didn't get a black flag, so we have to assume you did nothing wrong.
@@pitbitsDavidGerard Seems like a failure on their part. If you wait any longer you'll have a big party at the first turn and nobody will have any fun.
I don't understand the salt. Are you all competing for something tangible? Forgive me for being naive as I don't play this game I just watch the videos .
For me it's just about gaining IRating which you get based on your results. The higher the iRating the faster/better people you race against. There is also SafetyRating, and this determines what licence class you can race in, accidents and off tracks count against you, even when it's not your fault. So when someone hits you or takes you out, it can be very annoying/frustrating as it impacts both metrics. For others, they may be running the series so want to do well to score points in the final standings. It's the same as road rage in real life, some people get very agitated when someone else does something they think is wrong.........
Don't really know how much preparation is enough. Personally I just practice on weekdays and do my first race somewhere in the weekend. But I'm not much of a series hopper. My first priority is being consistent and safe, not so much to be on pace.
I think sticking to a series is the way to go in terms of getting better results. In real life very few drivers jump from one car to the next. However, I think it would make for a very boring youtube channel if I only did one type of car, and after so long on ACC doing GT3 i'm enjoying the variety, even if it's probably slowing me down a bit.
@@pitbitsDavidGerardI know what you mean. I'm not going to restrict myself to one series, though. Just finished my first race in the Porsche Cup at Le Mans and am quite happy with the result: 7th place and no incidents. So I can spend the rest of the weekend in another car. I might even try the GTP as the race you were in looked like fun. Have a nice weekend, David.
With a crash like that you can only cross your fingers and hope the best of it, I guess. And at least slow down like you did. But a good race after all, David, and your RUclips clock is counting nicely.
Thanks Arthur, slowing down is the only way but I was waiting to be hit from behind the whole time by someone who was just nailing the throttle and hoping. I really like the counter, so pleased I bought it.
@@pitbitsDavidGerardYes, being hit from behind is a real risk and often inevitable, but fortunately everybody behind you had common sense as well.
I think no fast repair in this series makes people think a bit more....
Good racing. I like the recaps too.
Thanks, it's a good way to learn how to avoid issues, or to confirm it wasn't my fault :)
Love that the guy who turned into you accepted fault and apologized after watching the replay LOL
Great race, David, and fun to watch, especially the start. As for that incident, personally I would have left him the corner simply because that corner is a bit to tricky to go into two wide, even if he hadn't turned into you the way he did and left you room. But I'm a coward ;-). I tried the M2 last week and didn't really like it. I mean, it drives okay and it sounds more than okay, but I just seem to have a lot of issues downshifting in it. You really need the rpms to drop a lot before it lets you downshift, which I don't really like. Of course that is more my fault than that of the car and I probably just need to get used to it.
I found the same, downshifting is a bit slow and anything below 3rd gear is a pain. I've driven it again in another race and did ok again, but it's not a car that I 'want' to drive right now compared to the others i've been driving
Hadn’t heard from you in a while and realized I missed the memo on the new channel. Good stuff!
Thanks for finding me again! I'm not planning to move again so hopefully no more memo's will be needed :)
Well done David 🏆🏁 you deserved that! How do you clear a jump start? Do you have to stop in the pits for a certain length of time?
I believe it is a drive through penalty, so you have to drive through the pits at pitspeed. And don't stop at your pit box, because that will be regarded as a normal pitstop and won't clear the black flag. In general, if you get a black flag the game will tell you what to do to clear it (shown in text below the black flag image).
That's right, the leader pitted to clear his penalty
@@Arthur-Tromp Thank you...
well done mate great race well deserved! 🏆🥳🍾 you had some really good results the last 3 videos keep up the good work 😎...i guess you was mentioning me lol....i didnt mean bad or anything with my comment i just support you an want to see you do your best get the results you deserve and not give anyone a easy time lol💙 nice youtube counter thingy 👍...look forward to the next video...take care mate
Hi Dean, I had your comment ringing in my ears.....don't ease off or let them catch you! As it turned out they were pretty fast anyway so it made for a good race. I know you didn't mean anything bad and I really appreciate the support. I'm glad you like the youtube counter, I dont know why but i've always wanted one and i'm really pleased with how it looks.
A very good start of the season indeed, David. Well done and congrats on the win!
It doesn't happen very often, and even though it wasn't the top split i'm pleased with the result. DId you notice anything different with this video?
@@pitbitsDavidGerard Yes, the extra overlay with the external camera view (I have to admit that I only just noticed it after your remark and by comparing two videos). Which by the way nicely sits on top of the meter box so we no longer can see if your FFB is still clipping or not. Very clever ;-).
That wasn't it. I normally do that, i just hadnt been using it for my week 14 races. There is something new in the background behind my head........
@@pitbitsDavidGerard Is that some sort of RUclips calendar, showing the number of members and the date?
That's it. I've wanted one for years but they are very expensive for what they are, but I found a much cheaper version last week and just got it set up. I also built a lego stand for it to go on, my first bit of lego building in over 40 years!
Nice race. Your R bar in the upper right keeps going crazy.
Actually it is the F bar (miss type maybe?), meaning FFB is clipping often. Well spotted. You might want to lower your FFB, David, because now you are loosing a lot of details.
As Arthur says its the F bar for Force Feedback. I noticed it today when I watched the video, I will have to look at that for the next race
@@Arthur-Tromp Old age is hell… Yup, then that’s a massive amount of clipping in some of the corners.
@@FormaldehydexDon't get me started about old age ;-).
Good race, David, and admirable how you kept your calm in the warmup lap. People really should learn to hit the brakes after losing control like that. Fortunately you didn't seem to have too much damage considering the result 👍.
I was so surprised and shocked I didn't know what to say.......but in the end it worked out ok and I guess I didn't have too much aero damage. Maybe another ACC driver not realising that we can still hit each other on the warm up.
🙆♂🤦♂🤷♂ was looking forward to this race then you started using the dreaded words i hate hearing like easing off ...holding back ...let them pass and stuff....then at 2.20 the early breaking to let them catch up i was like nooo what are you doinggggg and then 2 cars pass and was like all hope is lost :( lol least you had fun...look forward to the next race.....pole next time yeah 😎
LOL, Sorry Dean. I didn't think me just driving off into the distance would make for a good video and with no SA or IR on the line I was happy to have some battles. Next time I have the chance of a win I promise I wont ease off or hold back.......
Make sure you watch tomorrows race, no easing off in sight with that one......
Lesson learned, David. If you can rush off for an easy win, just rush off for an easy win ;-). But I understand it is just week 14 and an unranked race. By the way, the guy was weaving to try to break your slip stream on the straight.
As there was no SA or IR at stake I didn't see the point of just hot lapping......
Never trust qualifying times...I think one more lap you would have got him...but a good race to watch...
One more lap would have done it.........
It's called a draft. Not slip stream.
Draft, tow, slip stream are all the same aren't they?
i love doing these races as a cool off if I'm having a rough go in ranked series. they're quick, usually don't need any practice, and you can get your elbows out and race a little harder without worrying about irating or SR. just a tip, if you get on the apron and start to lose the rear like you did, just let off the gas and downshift and the car will usually snap right back into place.
Thanks for the tip, i think not going below the yellow line is the best way to avoid it in the first place, but if I do I will do as you suggest
He just came from ACC and thought he was ghosted?
Maybe, I didn't think of that
Early brakers can always get you by surprise, but that guy was extremely early, so kudos that you still managed to mostly avoid him. I wouldn't be surprised if he raced some Porsche Cup races on Suzuka last week and thought it wasn't necessary to practice for this race seeing as the brake point he used is about the same you would use in the Porsche. Oh, and congrats on the win! (we will not mention your rare mistake in the warmup lap ;-)
I dont think i've ever crashed on the warm up lap before ....... the race was fun but he did brake way way to early so yes I was lucky to get by without more damage than I had
Nice win...the car looks really feisty...but fun...that gravel certainly adds an extra challenge to deal with...
I think the novilty of the gravel will wear off just like the rain did, if you want to see an empty lobby just look for the ones that are wet.........the LMP2 is fun to drive so I think I will be doing more of that
just a tip, the ducking with the voice was really distracting. If you want to have voice along with the ingame audio it might be wise to only put game audio on full volume, other times just keep it continually on a lower volume :)
Thanks Jim, i'm always fine tuning things so I will have a look for the next video I record
rule something hundred : never rejoin on a turn (stay on the apron)
He did come out of nowhere and quite a speed!
Wow, that really came out of nowhere. So rejoins on the oval side can be as bad as they can be on the road side, apparently. Oh well, can't be helped. Up to the next season it is then. Looking forward to it!
I had to watch the replay just to see where he came from. I think he was so far off he was rejoining from ACC :)
@@pitbitsDavidGerard As I understand there is some cheating going on in ACC, so who knows ;-). Any plans for week 13, David? Maybe I try some FF1600 this week myself.
I'm going to see what takes my fancy, maybe try something I dont normally drive.
of course it was a BMW ☠️
I don't think he was indicating either :)
I only did some practice when this combo was active on the service, but that corner was messing me up as well, David. So we can safely conclude that it is the corner which is the problem and not us ;-).
I had the same issue when they ran it for Formula Vee a few months ago too, there is something about that corner I just cant get right
@@pitbitsDavidGerardIt is a corner that gradually gets more tight, so maybe that is the problem. I know I have always some difficulty with corners that gets tighter like that.
I just doesn't seem to flow, and the track is very bumpy. T1 at Suzuka is a tightening corner and I manage that one alright....
This stuff is getting worse and the iracing stewards do nothing about it
I will be reporting him, there is no excuse for ruining a race at the start like that
That was weird indeed. It sure did look deliberate, so I hope you reported him.
I will do, he said in the chat after that he had to look away for a moment that's why he hit me - i'm not sure I believe that and even so there is no excuse
@@pitbitsDavidGerardI also doubt it considering his shift to second gear before hitting you. You normally don't hit the throttle and shift up while looking away.
You just leave it in balanced, the final 2 laps you can go attack mode. The first few laps in balanced it'll deploy to 50% anyway. Seems like you have a good natural feel for racing!
Thanks, that attack mode really did mess me up with the braking. I enjoyed driving that car though so will do more next season.
Good result, David. Now I understand why you prefer the LMP2 of the three classes ;-).
Absolutely. I like all three but the two faster cars are more fun than the GT3
awesome vid! I love the constant 3rd person view in the corner
Thanks Brent, I think it adds to the content having that external view as well
I did the production car challenge in the Mustang a bit to get used to being the faster car in multi class races. They switched it to the BMW GT4 and it's still a really good way to get the feeling of overtaking without having to worry so much about car adjustments and such. Good drive!
I dont have the BMW, I normally run the MX5 in that multi-class race. The BMWs do come by pretty fast but they are slower into the corners so can get in the way a bit when they overtake and slam on the brakes.....
The faster the car the harder to control especially when changing driving modes...you did really well. Was fun watching you overtake the slower cars for a change...
Overtaking is better than being overtaken I think. Tomorrows video is with the LMP2, and maybe this is the sweet spot, just like the three bears porridge.
You are most welcome, David. Enjoy your new car!
Just finished watching your race. It might help to assign a couple of buttons to be able to adjust your braking bias while driving (if you haven't already). So you can move the brake bias temporarily more to the rear when you have to brake hard for a chicane. That should help with braking in a straight line as far as I know (I am by no means on expert). It might also help when changing the engine map. Anyway, good thing slow downs don't give you incident points ;-).
Thanks again!
I will have a look at that. I'm assuming that when in attack mode it's not regenerating so much under braking so it doesn't stop so well, or just needs more brake than when it's in the other modes.
Enjoyed watching this. I think the GTP speed and traffic management are beyond me for now. Gonna practice the LMP3 for now!
LMP 2 next for me in tomorrows video, I think that may be the car I like the best
Understeer is one hell of a thing, on those slow chicanes if you turn the wheel too fast it causes too much the fronts and cant get front grip, i hate it so bad when it happens
I guess the only solution is to go a bit slower so the front grips, or change the steering ratio so I get more turning?
@@pitbitsDavidGerardmaybe you just needed to apply throttle later, seemed like you applied too early and induced understeer on your fronts
The Porsche Cup Fixed doesn't have rain this week, David, so you could try that. And the F4 is also at Mugello this week (no rain), so that is an option as well.
Thanks Authur, I will try both of those. I like fixed set up as I know it's down to me how slow I go, rather than a 'magic' set up
@@pitbitsDavidGerardOh, just admit that you don't know how to make a good setup, David ;-). I know I can't.
That's right, on ACC I could make a basic set up but still had to buy the Coach Dave versions to go really quick. On iRacing I just run the standard set ups they provide and maybe mess with the brake bias a bit but that's all
Good race, David. I have tried the Ferrari GT3 a couple of times, but found it to have a lot of understeer. At least the fixed setup has. So it doesn't surprise me that you had some difficulty to get the car around in some corners. Enjoyed watching it, though.
I think I struggle with steering lock on that first chicain. I had the same problem with the hypercar and the LMP2 - both videos are coming up this week
@@pitbitsDavidGerard Looking forward to them 👍
You get a mention in tomorrows as well........
Do you use Simagic pedals David?
HI. No I use Heusinkveld Sprint pedals. I bought them 2nd hand from Dave Cam about 3 years ago and they have been fantastic ever since. I've done zero maintenance on them and they just work. It was the biggest upgrade I've made in terms of driving feel and speed.
Unfortunate
I thought I was going to get away with it.........
Well done, David! Maybe not the easy victory you expected, but surely more fun.
Yes it could have been quite boring otherwise
