Why does my guitar have no sound?
The most common reason for no sound after rewiring a guitar is typically at the output jack. In this video Ed explains the number one cause.

How to Fix Out of Phase Guitar Pickups - How Pickups Sound Out of Phase
Why is it upside down?
This is exactly what was wrong with
Thanks-card worked a treat.
but is 2 not supposed to be out of phase with 1 & 3 ?
What do you have for a three humbucker hot rail s-s-s?
Very Helpful ... Thanks
I had out of town music store work on my HSS Stratocaster (Select series), after I gotta it back, the middle and neck pickups sounded weak and thin while the bridge pickup sounds muddy, the work was done out of town and it's next to impossible to get back to this so-called music store, can anybody take a guess as to what is going on? I lifted the pickguard and all the wire connections look good, I'm going to change the pickup selector just because it's been used a lot, but then again if somebody has any information as to help me assess this problem I really would appreciate it 👍
Thank you
Im going to move in to my own first home i like your set up for your guitar's i hope if God willing it looks as cool as yours ..Im taking knobs off a 57 ri to install shielding plate and to replace 3 way switch ..Thank you for the info wow facter 100% . I will continue after my eye heals from my first attempt before vedio. I wonder if i can sue Fender just kidding i alway watch a few vedios before i attempt any work on my guitars . imagine how much a person can mess up without vedios like this..again muchisimas gracias for how to vedio..RocknRollflat5
Chris is awesome to work with and a wonderful talent.
Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for!
I love the products from mad hatter, but the wiring diagram and these videos are some of the worst I have ever seen. Is there a updated version of the tutorial? Or at least a guide that shows photos?
Im with you on that, these for real suck. Its more of a homemade video than something professional for a company, first of all the quality, i know damn well 1080p was normal and cheap to record with 5 years ago and the video is in 480p like its 2006 or something. Second these videos should be about explaining how to wire the thing up, alot of off topic stuff happening.
Like im not trying to discredit the company or anything im aware of how effective the electronics are and haven't seen another company match it. But i need to understand and see how things work before i go and buy it, everything could've been shortened to an hour or less in a single video for what needs to be explained.
@@TurqSamurai I followed this video series just to realize it was the wrong one, so I said screw it I remember my training in electronics I’ll just look at the diagram, worst diagram I’ve ever seen. Not only that but they didn’t send even half the wires needed for the wiring, I used some wire I had from a left over project and went to work exactly as the diagram instructed and guess what I heaping pile of nothing. I’ve got a friend who sent his guitar with into a repair shop with the same kit I had and the metal machine pickups from irongear and they said it wouldn’t take much longer than a week, it took them damn near 3 months to do it because the wiring diagram spotty at best. But his guitar sounded absolutely amazing. I have another one of their kits same one that already didn’t work and I have 4 pickups, honestly I’m about to do what my friend did and go to the same guitar shop since they at least have some knowledge over the products now. I’m not bashing the company as I’ve said I love the products and I’ve seen shitty guitars with meh pickups at best sound pretty damn good with just the terminator system being installed. Their products are high quality but the videos and wiring are pushing people away, and this is a solderless system… it’s supposed to be easier
@@travisroach8847 i haven't gotten any yet thats why ive been researching heavily on the product, was gonna build a guitar from Warmoth and use this, a single tone single volume for a single pickup guitar. But its so frustrating how theres barely any good videos of the installation process.
It's easier to use pins on that multifilar wires. But you need small pins and pin crimping tool.
thank you, can’t believe that’s all it was lol
crap that nobody really needs
This comment is nearly as useless as yours. In any case, what crap does anyone actually need other than food? Certainly not things like the phone or computer you’re using to watch and comment on RUclips videos with.
@@intergalacticpimp8683 ....play your useless GTA nonsense, junior
makes sense, had similar issue with an old Strat jack a few months ago and corrected it by installing a new one
Hi. I've got a question. Seems my middle pickup was out of phase and on position 2(hambucker+ middle single coil) it sounded crunchy with highs. But a guy resoldered my guitar pickups and the special out of phase sound on position 2 was lost What should I do to regain the out of phase sound on position 2?
You sir made my day! The countless times i've spent re-wiring, soldering, putting everything together, tuning up and then finding no solution drove me insane. Finally found your vid and solution worked like a charm. I salute you
Thanks for the tip. Used a thin plastic insurance card and it came off with a little work. No damage :)
Yes! The tip arm should not be touching the wall. Every guitar soldering jack tutorial should mention this but they don't especially after all that work.
I have been exploring your youtube and website the past couple days, can't wait to get my hands on some of your products! But what don't you make those blade pickups anymore?
*Promo SM* 😡
Will this work on the jem Jr because I noticed that my bridge pickup doesn’t have 4 wires it has 3 I have no green wires is this a problem and I have a black and yellow wire on my middle pickup so do i follow the directions as is but just put my yellow wire in the place of the red? Also my neck pickup is the same as my bridge just 3 wires
Yes all you have to do is correspond/substitute the wires for your pu's to what they are on dimarzio's. don't worry about not having that 4th wire. The reason you only have 3 wires is on the import pu's the one wire is for both coils to be wired in series. With dimarzio's and duncan's they give you the option to not twist those wires together to link the coils. With your pickups they are permanently connected but can be split with a switch by that one wire.
Bruh! Fantastic video! SD should post this on their site! 🇨🇦👍
have you tryed what i do ? Just start with 2 picks stacked on each other in between the knob and pickguard, then start stuffing 1 pick at a time in between the 2 picks. It wont take but a couple more to pop the knob up. try it
.. Ive been doing it for years but I first use 2 picks together and slide both under one side of the knob then get another and wedge it in between the first 2 , the continue adding one more pick and you will be surprised that the knob pops up very easy. Great for stuburn knobs that just wont pull off, make a video of this.
Thank you very much. I used a string from a hoodie and it popped off. Probably should've put something over it but I got lucky it didn't hit me. The plastic sheet underneath the knobs was driving me nuts. Thanks again!
Without a battery, is the guitar inactive?
Does this system still pop if the volume knob is rolled all the way down?
When Jacks go wild!
'Sup Ed? VINICIUS VROCK here. Stay tune for your Mail 'cause I may have some suggestions. About this explanation, I faced some problem years ago and just NOW I know why thanks to you! Warm Regards, my friend Cheers
It's possible that both single coils were wired backwards. Also makingnit out of phase with the humbucker.
I think the issue just arises because there isn’t a standard way the magnets are directed when making pickups. If the first magnet is North/South then the next has to be the opposite and so on and so forth. So the pickups have to be designed together to avoid this. The easy workaround though in this case is just swapping the hot and ground leads from the humbucker which reverses the way the power goes through the magnets and removes the hum and puts the signal back in the correct orientation to get your in/out of phase corrected. So easiest way to fix it is what is shown here. He could also flip the humbucker which would be odd, or flip the two single coils around or rewire 2 pickups instead of one. 🤷🏽♂️
Ha I didn't watch the full part about the shoe lace an the knob knocks me right in the four head 😂
I just pound an old dull chisel under the knob and then use a rusty wood rasp for a fulcrum to pry it up... But seriously, the card and shoelace idea is great. I have tried fishing line but it can create dents in the outer flanges of the knob. By the way, the bridge pickup treble side adjustment screw is sticking up. The silicon rubber tube underneath probably dried out and cracked allowing the pickup to lift too high at that end. Hope you replaced all the silicon tubes. I also hope Jesse wasn't pissed at you for adjusting the pickup properly and by doing so, cutting the volume on his hot lead string solos...
Looking to upgrade my Jackson JS22 Dinky. I have SD invaders in them but definitely need to redo the pots and all that and wanted to find a nice solderless solution. Is the TERMINATOR 4/25 SINGLE VOLUME SINGLE TONE SYSTEM WITH 5-WAY SELECTOR SWITCH FOR DUAL HUMBUCKER (SVST-4/25) the best option? Especially for coil splitting?
I am experiencing this crazy problem with a 2 pup strat. I enjoyed your video which confirmed my problem. But I am at zero about wiring. There's too many unusual things in your guitar's guts that aren't in mine. I have to try for a video that is bare bones basic. But I'm certain that this demo is ideal for somebody with savvy.
yeah I am frustrated that I can't find a good video just showing basic strat and how to fix the wiring
had the same issue with a Seymour Duncan Lil '59. Thank You !!:)
A thin gift-wrap ribbon is what I use to pop off those knobs. Strong and flexible with a bit of it wrapped around the hands for a better grip. Won't break, scratch or stick to the surface on the pickguard.
Thanks so much!
You goofwads keep running your mouths about having the same "problem." If you don't want the pickups out of phase, like I want, then why did you wire the sht out of phase to begin with?
But how do you place another
Thank you. I have exactly the same problem. Now I know what to do. Awesome!! 👍
Thank you shawty bae. I love you 😘 kisses for daddy ❤
Quick question! I have the original Dimarzio Dark Matter pickups(Gravity Storms with fancy covers)and DM2 single coil(to match covers.) Each humbucker has a green ground as well as the bare wire, which I believe is also a ground. The single coil has the active black, a red ground, and a grey wire that I believe may also be a ground. The directions suggest not putting more than 3 wires into a single ground terminal. But at 2 per pickup, I now have 6 ground wires. In the video, you have no superfluous grounds to attach when you begin wiring the 5 way to the pots. Did you run all of your ground wires into the black terminal on the 5 way switch?
I recently bought the same one but a 3 way selector, Is it possible to integrate The Blow Me switch in that particular harness?
I was doing series/Split/Parallel switch on a Seymour Duncan Humbucker(SSH strat) so I flipped Black/Green and also Red/White wire. Now the 4th position is no longer weak and thin, it's loud and clear as it should be! Thank you for the video instruction 😀
You had the BEST method of them all. Thank you
idk why but i broke my knob by doing that ;-; now i cant play my guitar
I just ordered a set. Can't wait to get 'em and install 'em and hear what they sound like in my guitar!
I have a somewhat similar issue, I just put 3 new fender deluxe single coils in my strat and I have the same loss and tone in between the selector at 2 and 4. Anything I should look for? They sound great in the full bridge, neck and middle . But falls off in between like yours did
