So What - Big Band Chart - Arranged by Doug Leibinger

Uptempo take on the Miles classic - I think it needs some editing . . . anyway, this was recorded by the University of Miami Studio Jazz Band around 2002-2003 with great solos by Ted Zimmerman on trumpet and Chris Whiteman on guitar.

Solos are by Jason Carder on the trumpet, and Chip McNeill on the tenor sax. Lots of amazing mus...

      I don't see why you couldn't use the groove/harmonic idea in a small group setting for the head. I'd likely skip the "shout" section in a small group arrangement . . .

    Less is…….MORE. Dig?

  • @rexallen9970
    @rexallen9970 20 дней назад

    Sorry, The chart is grossly overarranged, with a little breathing space for anybody to stretch out; Soloists who have no clue about the actual melody they’re playing, And a drummer, who’s throwing in bombs and accents behind the soloists instead of supporting them with straight time that SWINGS son they can build from…. also, The tempo totally throws away the melodic beauty of the song, and the intent of the composer/lyricist. A big band chart on a tune like this can swing easily if the BPM were cut back by 33% so the figures can be heard, felt and appreciated. The intent of this writer? Constructive criticism. (Key of G - smart move :))

    Is it standard to write slashes for comping in drums and piano but to write out a bass line?

    • @douglasleibinger8549
      @douglasleibinger8549 Месяц назад

      Not really. Slashes are generally fine for a professional bass part - however, if a younger band will play your chart, it might be helpful to have a written bass line just in case they don't know how to walk etc. - I also put one in Sibelius so I can hear the chart play back with it . . .

    These really are everything I hope for when I look up arrangements. Maybe more of a melody in it than a scatter of lovely bebop style notation, but buy in large lovely all fhe way through. The dissonance is infectious, very reminiscent to..a few songs I have on my mind.

    I'm glad Trombones think this is a solo the entire time haha! I think saxophones, trumpets, and trombones may have been playing three different songs in volume. Saxophones are at PP Trumpets at MP And dear Trombones have achieved the sound barrier.
